Description
Students take a census of an outdoor site, and look for organisms that perform different “jobs” in the biotic community. A biotic (or natural) community is made up of the various organisms that live and interact with one another in a particular environment. As in a human community, its members have different roles and depend on each other for survival. In this activity, students examine a study area to find out what organisms live there and the ecological jobs or niches they fill.

Description
Students are invited to create a survival plan of what they would need to survive if they were to live outside in their local habitat. They can only take from the earth and land and must consider factors like season, weather, habitat and ecosystem. "Netukulimk explains Mi’kmaw ways of life, tying together social and economic practices with systems of governance through time. Living in harmony, and taking only what you need, is the true essence of Indigenous ways of being and living." (Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre). Our linked video explores the concept in an accessible way for children and teenagers. Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre has an extensive guide about Teaching About the Mi'kmaq (pdf). This activity is one of our Indigenous perspectives content pieces. More to come. This activity is one of our Inquiry-tools (activities that encourage students to think about what they know and how they learn).
