Step one: Have students look at a picture for clues to answer who, what, where, when, why and how questions about the battle depicted in the picture. Step two: Have students examine primary sources (9 sources available). Teacher may choose to have students look at all 9 or allow students to select 6 to look at. Students will try to piece together the causes and components of the incident depicted in the picture presented in step one. Step three: Offer students a secondary source on the battle of Seven Oaks in order that they gain an overview of the Battle of Seven Oaks. I recommend TC2's Snapshots of Nineteenth Century Canada for this. Step four: Present the Culminating Task where students can create a short story, a new broadcast or a skit depicting an interpretation of stories behind the Battle of Seven Oaks. There is an assessment rubric provided and a self/team evaluation sheet. Make this your own. It is a lot of fun. I have tried it!

This lesson is the introduction to a unit on Ancient Civilizations and introducing Ancient Rome. This lesson fits in with the Historical Thinking Project’s Big 6, specifically the concepts Establish Historical Significance as well as Historical Perspectives. Historical significance depends on any given student’s perspective on history. To have a historical perspective as a modern student can be challenging with this generation immersed in technology. Some historical landmarks included, but not limited to are the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Baths of Caracalla, Saint Peters Basilica, the Temple of Saturn the Roman Forum, the Vatican, Circus Maximus, Piazza Navona, Castel Sant’Angelo and St John in the Lateran. As Grade 7 curricular content, this exercise is focused on Ancient civilizations up until 7th Century, so it would be ideal to choose landmarks within this time period, but up to the discretion of the teacher.

A lesson plan on propaganda maps geared towards 20th Century World History 12 (adaptable to Political Studies 12 or Social Studies 11). In the modern era, students are constantly surrounded by digital and non-digital forms of persuasion. This is not new: propaganda and persuasion have long been used to influence the perspectives of citizens. Maps are spatially malleable and subject to intentional distortion, for military, geopolitical, economic and/or other aims. These persuasion techniques emerge in modern media. Students are first exposed to a variety of persuasive maps, where they learn to identify and critically analyze the aims and audiences of these maps. Then students are divided into groups that act as public relations companies who have been contracted to make a map that persuades U.K. audiences to vote to either leave or remain in the E.U. This activity increases understanding of how persuasive tools are used and how citizens must be critical consumers of information.

Choose Your Voice offers four action-packed units that comprehensively explore prejudice, stereotypes and historical oppression. Students will learn from a variety of media, lessons, activities and discussions, with opportunities to brainstorm, share and compare, participate in class discussions and create graphic organizers. In original five-minute documentary videos, narratives of historical events are described first-hand by survivors. Written by teachers for teachers, the lessons are easy to use, thought-provoking and powerful. Minority groups such as Jews, Muslims, Sikhs and First Nations are represented in the resource to offer students a wide range of perspectives and well-rounded education on the topics presented. Students are encouraged to speak up against all injustices and not be bystanders. Teachers register for free (always).

Bullets, Blood and Stones: the journey of a child soldier, brings students face to face with the child soldier situation that occurred in Uganda when infamous warlord, Joseph Kony, abducted 60,000 children and forced them to join his Lord’s Resistance Army. Teachers who have used this book in their classrooms note that student interest is high as the story is fast paced and the characters are very relatable. Real life events in the book provide a perfect teaching opportunity to contrast the lives of children in other parts of the world and challenge the way in which students view themselves and their place in society. Although events in the story are horrifying, there are moments of warmth and humour that are uplifting and give hope to the human condition. Teaching resources, including chapter by chapter discussion questions, activities, and a power point presentation, are available on the resource page of White’s website.

At Mazu our users are learning to embrace the positive power of social media in a safe, curated space free of negativity, but we don’t want to stop there! We believe digital citizenship needs to be discussed and taught at an early age, so we invite your class to join our movement. You can help us to facilitate discussions on what it means to be a good digital citizen, and how we all have a part to play in making the online world a positive place. This lesson introduces students to the Renaissance by focusing on art history and important innovations in the art world. Students learn to define a variety of art terms associated with the Renaissance and the Middle Ages and engage with the concept of visual symbolism. Students work towards writing a structured, descriptive paragraph outlining their own imagined symbolic Renaissance Portrait. By using writing planners and scaffolds, students write how they use symbolism to represent 5 of their personality traits in their Renaissance-inspired portrait. This lesson was originally designed for use in a Humanities 8 class (with scaffolding for ELL students). This lesson could be adapted for use in a variety of Art, Social Studies, English, and ELL contexts.
