- Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "Age of Steamers” from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. In a province as vast as British Columbia, the focus in this film is the introduction of sternwheelers and steamships that allowed greater movement and mobility and how they impacted the development of the colony and province in the Gold Rush era and beyond. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. - Everyone has a unique story to share. Stories help us learn about ourselves, our families, and other people. Curiosity and wonder leads us to new discoveries about ourselves and the world around us. By reading “And Tango Makes Three”, we not only learn about penguins and the penguin life cycle, but about other family structures (i.e. same-sex families) and how same-sex couples can become parents. This lesson plan can be used cross-curricula with Socials, PHE, ELA, and may also be used in Science (i.e. if combined with a stronger focus on the penguin life cycle, habitat, etc.)

- Step one: Have students look at a picture for clues to answer who, what, where, when, why and how questions about the battle depicted in the picture. Step two: Have students examine primary sources (9 sources available). Teacher may choose to have students look at all 9 or allow students to select 6 to look at. Students will try to piece together the causes and components of the incident depicted in the picture presented in step one. Step three: Offer students a secondary source on the battle of Seven Oaks in order that they gain an overview of the Battle of Seven Oaks. I recommend TC2's Snapshots of Nineteenth Century Canada for this. Step four: Present the Culminating Task where students can create a short story, a new broadcast or a skit depicting an interpretation of stories behind the Battle of Seven Oaks. There is an assessment rubric provided and a self/team evaluation sheet. Make this your own. It is a lot of fun. I have tried it!

- Alcohol was a part of the North American fur trade from the beginning, and many traders viewed it as a crucial ingredient in business success. For example, in 1764, a group of New York merchants petitioned the Lords Commissioners for Trade and Plantations to change regulations banning fur traders from using alcohol in their commerce. They argued “when the vent of liquors is allow’d amongst them, it spurs them on to an unwaried application in hunting in order to supply the trading places with furs and skins in exchange for liquors.”1 But not everyone who engaged in the fur trade saw it that way. This excerpt from a memoir by a Moravian missionary living in 18th century America gives us a glimpse into the reasons one Aboriginal man chose to deal with traders who did not use alcohol in their negotiations.

- Divergent, by Veronica Roth, is the first of a trilogy, a series of young-adult dystopian novels set in a post-apocalyptic world. It explores themes related to individual and social identity as well as the use of science, and drugs in particular, as a means of social control. Citizens are divided into five factions based on their dispositions: Abnegation, for the selfless; Amity, for the peaceful; Candor, for the honest; Dauntless, for the brave; and Erudite, for the intellectual. Erudite scientists have designed a number of serums to be used in different ways for different populations for different reasons. At age 16, people must decide whether to stay with their family’s faction or join the faction best matching their personal aptitude. But then there are the Divergents. The prose is fast-paced but also provides a rich foundation for exploring many themes of interest to teens, including aspects of drug use and drug control.

- In 2002, two American fighter pilots, Major Harry Schmidt and Major William Umbach, killed four Canadian soldiers near Kandahar, Afghanistan, because the pilots mistakenly thought the Canadian soldiers were shooting at them. Their court defense attributed the pilots’ actions to the Air Force-issued stimulant drugs they were taking at the time. The pilots had been taking the stimulant Dexedrine during the flight, under the standard-order guidelines of their commander. Today, when pilots are finished with their missions, they are provided with Ambien or Restoril, the “no-pills,” to bring them down and help them sleep and adjust after defying the body’s circadian rhythms and altering neurotransmitter levels with amphetamines. The lawyer for Major Schmidt noted that the depressant sleep aid Ambien, which was given to Schmidt to help him sleep before the mission, also affected his mental state when he bombed the Canadians.

- At the beginning of the 18th century, the English were well known for their love of alcohol. One Swiss visitor wrote, “Would you believe it, though water is to be had in abundance in London, and of fairly good quality, absolutely none is drunk? The lower classes, even the paupers, do not know what it is to quench their thirst with water.”1 Though Londoners drank hard, the perception of their drunkenness was mostly red noses and good cheer. But by the 1720s, a new pattern of drinking, associated with gin, had emerged.

- When children learn about the individual nature of animals such as grizzly bears, they learn to care about their fate and also recognize the fragility of our ecosystems and the role humans play within it. This unit of study highlights the importance of grizzlies to our environment, provides students with a better understanding of the role they play in the ecosystem, and how we as citizens can help to keep bears (and our communities) safe. The unit of study was designed to align with the BC curriculum, allowing for easy adoption by educators, and contains five 45 minute lessons, with accompanying teaching tools. An extension pack containing grizzly bear artefacts, trivia playing cards, and a size chart is available to borrow.

- Kindness Counts focuses on empathy. A primary-level, curriculum-linked unit designed to teach students about caring and respect for others, animals and nature. Through participatory activities students will understand and demonstrate empathy by noting similarities and differences amongst people and animals. Further, by examining their own feelings, students learn to recognize how their actions and words affect others and the world around them.

- The Labour Movement in British Columbia 1840-1914 and 1914-2013 can be used as background material for the Working People: A History of Labour in BC vignettes series hosted on the Knowledge Network. The articles are designed to be used individually in the Social Studies 10 and Social Studies 11 course. Teachers can supplement the reading activity with selected lessons from the Working People: A History of Labour in BC lessons that will be posted here. Additionally, the video series The Edge of the World: B.C.'s Early Years has a number of segments that compliment the reading for the 1840-1914 time period.

- The materials address aspects of the key learning standards of the current social studies 10 and 11 curriculums. For Social Studies 10, critical thinking skills are applied throughout as well as research and writing skills as described in the “skills and processes of social studies”. Aspects of “Identity, Society and Culture” are addressed in the materials including gender roles, ethnicity and daily life as well the interactions of Aboriginal peoples in early Canada. Elements of the “Economy and Technology” learning outcomes are discussed in the examination of resource development and technological innovations. Additionally, aspects of the environmental impact and attitudes towards resource extraction are developed as they relate to the “Environment” learning outcome of the IRP. Regarding Social Studies 11, the areas of the “skills and processes of social studies” apply throughout as well as aspects of how Canadians can affect change at the federal and provincial levels of government. In the later examples of the reading the impact of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms are reflected in the work. The role of workers in both World War I and II and aspects of the “Autonomy and International Involvement” aspect of the IRP . The material can also be affectively applied to the “Society and Culture” of the curriculum addressing the development and impact of social policies and programs, the role of the labour movement in Canada and specifically the role of women in social, political and economic change in Canada.

- Reading questions, craft activity, and creative writing prompt based on middle-grade adventure novel "Last Chance Island" by BC author Norma Charles—for individual or group learning. Book Description: Two very different stories intersect with surprising results. Two African children, Kalu and his cousin, Aisha, escape from their village after it's destroyed by rebel soldiers. The kids flee to the coast where they find work on a fishing boat bound for Britain . . . until the nervous fisherman abandons them on Last Chance Island off the coast of Ireland. Meanwhile, Spike, a Canadian teen, finds out that her father has died, and she is being sent to live with a distant relative, a woman who tends the lighthouse on Last Chance Island. Spike can't wait to escape and join a troupe of musicians she's met in Dublin. But one day, she discovers the two stranded kids in desperate need of help.
