The SLC eco-social education resources have been designed to empower youth through solution-oriented approaches to the environmental and social issues facing society today. SLC is comprised of five independent, interchangeable modules that focus on developing core values for an environmentally sustainable and socially just worldview. Each module includes a lesson plan, videos, and classroom activities, as well as eight student inquiry & project-based 'Action Packs' that explore sustainability topics, providing current research links, experiential community activities and hands-on actions to develop students’ core competencies in critical and creative thinking, communication, and personal and social responsibility. Learning for Life is an education initiative that aims to develop the various aspects of digital health literacy and promote healthy lifestyle behaviours among upper elementary students and families in BC. Learning for Life provides students with the competencies to use technology to support their health, to critically assess information provided through technology, and to balance the helpfulness of technology with the promotion of healthy lifestyle behaviours (using Canadian guidelines). The initiative was created by a group of researchers in UBC Faculty of Medicine's Digital Emergency Medicine Office who explore and advance the use of information and communication technologies to connect people to quality health information.

DVD with study guide that tells the story of January. January Marie Lapuz was a transgender woman of colour who was murdered in September 2012 in New Westminster, British Columbia. She was an advocate for trans rights and was known as the “bright light” among Vancouver’s LGBTQ community. This documentary feature film is a celebration of January’s life, among other trans women of colour. This film is about remembering the impact that January had on the lives of everyone she encountered. This film is about uplifting the narratives and lived experiences of trans women of colour. This film is about collectively liberating all marginalized and oppressed people.

Various studies have shown that having a pet can increase self-esteem, physical fitness, and social connectedness while decreasing loneliness and stress. This lesson uses this fact as a jumping off point to engage students in thinking about ways we might use to manage stress, the different impacts these strategies might have and how to make choices in using these tools to maximize our own well-being. As a facilitator of dialogue, you are not an observer but a participant in the conversation. So you should feel free to add in thoughts that may not be voiced by the students (but do so in a way that is conversational rather than authoritative). At the end of the day, we want students to recognize that some tools (like exercise and breathing) are more universal, both in terms of number of people for whom they are effective and the range of situations in which they help. But no tool is a magic bullet, and all tools must be used wisely.

We live in a world of ‘mixed signals’ about how to stay healthy and enjoy life and the risks and rewards of substance use. It can be hard to decide which suggestions are right. Health related guidelines and recommendations have been developed by scientists and health researchers to help Canadians make decisions that promote health. But these guidelines often fail to acknowledge their own limitations or to place their recommendations within the context of broader social and political factors. This lesson introduces some of these guidelines and recommendations that can provide a springboard for critically reviewing particular behaviours (eating, physical activity, substance use) and exploring how such guidelines might be useful in making decisions about health and well-being. Rather than trying to “sell” students on a specific behaviour or belief, the learning activities should help students build the skills to explore and seek to understand and manage their own health.

Cette ressource est un outil pour aider les étudiants à mieux écrire des productions écrites. Le Petit Lexique est une référence qui permet de trouver le mot juste qui traduit l’idée désirant être véhiculée. Cette ressource illustre les différentes étapes de la composition. Au départ pour faire germer des idées avant de commencer un texte, durant le développement, pour faire progresser le texte, et finalement, pour réviser et améliorer le texte. Le recueil décompose les différentes parties du texte narratif (récit d’aventure, le conte ou la nouvelle). La situation initiale est composée par la notion du temps, le lieu et le personnage. Le développement du récit est illustré par des exemples liés aux événements, les réactions et actions du personnage et finalement, la situation finale offre des exemples liés au dénouement (l’échec ou la réussite).

This PowerPoint presents a history of the Tour de France from its inception, and the challenges that participants face during the entire race. Videos present information about Drafting, Cracking, and the dangers of this intense bicycle race which happens annually in July in France. Students will also see some of the best moments from last year's Tour de France and a 3D rendition of the race route for 2018. Students are presented with pre-viewing questions and will respond to them after the videos.
