- Description
- How to ask questions in French, condensed down to one sheet. The first page has all the information, and the second has the exercises. This is designed for students in Grade 8 Core French, but can be adapted for different levels. It can be completed with minimal prior knowledge of the language, but advanced students will appreciate the opportunity to push themselves to use inverted question structures; in this way, it is an easily differentiable way to present the material.

- Description

- Now can you ask the most powerful questions, in order to unlock an even wider universe of knowledge? And why is the choosing of a simple word (like "How" or "Why") the key to your greatest quest and your greatest question? This activity walks students through creating questions, evaluating the quality of their questions and sets the scene for further research. - Ways in which Indigenous people and communities have been impacted by colonial laws, policies, and history (e.g., overrepresentation of Indigenous people in Canadian prisons)
- What Gladue rights are and how they fit into Canada’s criminal justice system (i.e., when sentencing an Indigenous person, the judge is obliged to take that person’s circumstances into account)
- How Gladue rights relate to the concept of reconciliation and the “Calls to Action” of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (particularly 30–32) Big Ideas Texts and stories about the impacts of colonialism and possibilities of reconciliation provide insight into key aspects of Canada’s past, present, and future. Texts and stories about the impacts of Canada’s colonial history play a role within the process of reconciliation. The exploration of text and story deepens understanding of one’s identity, others, and the world, including:
- how aspects of Canada’s colonial history have led to current disparities between Indigenous peoples and other Canadians, and
- how attempts to address the impacts of colonialism are an aspect of reconciliation. Colonial laws, policies, and history affected Indigenous peoples in history and continue to have consequences for Indigenous people and communities today. Reconciliation, which involves the transformation of Canadian society, takes many forms, including the criminal justice system’s recognition of Gladue rights. Canada’s colonial history and its ongoing impact has led to loss of culture and identity for many Indigenous people. It has led to significant educational, income, health, and social disparities between Indigenous peoples and other Canadians, including an overrepresentation of Indigenous people in prison.

- Description
- This unit is designed to be highly adaptable to the needs of the teacher and their class. The activities can be applied to any short story. You can read multiple short stories in a row and wrap up the unit with the "Book Talks" lesson, or you can read a single short story and move on to other subjects. The projects should take students a full week to complete and they should be able to do them mostly independently. This model works well for asynchronous distance learning. However, the activities will easily transfer into the face-to-face classroom.

- This summative format asks students to choose a previously completed activity to expand upon and/or transform to create their summative piece. In tandem, students are also asked to select – from a curated list of relevant competencies – which they wish to develop/focus on throughout their project. Through the student’s proposal and the teacher’s feedback on this proposal, student and teacher co-create the criteria of where and how each student will demonstrate their competencies to me. This summative structure was originally created for a sonnets unit, however, it can be adapted for many different units and subjects. - Description
- These documents take a bit of time to introduce, but quickly become a staple for the English classroom. Based on research and various resources, I have put together a strategy to get students thinking and connecting with what they read. The guide helps to get students started with the concept of close reading, and the dialogue journal is to be used for longer works and/or works that cannot be written on. I recommend taking time to teach the subject-specific vocabulary and doing a guided practice of annotating. For the annotations, you can give a minimum number for the annotations themselves and/or the number of categories. To prepare for an essay, I have also directed students to have a certain number of annotations that can be used as evidence in their writing.

- Description
- Reading questions, craft activity, and creative writing prompt based on middle-grade adventure novel "Last Chance Island" by BC author Norma Charles—for individual or group learning. Book Description: Two very different stories intersect with surprising results. Two African children, Kalu and his cousin, Aisha, escape from their village after it's destroyed by rebel soldiers. The kids flee to the coast where they find work on a fishing boat bound for Britain . . . until the nervous fisherman abandons them on Last Chance Island off the coast of Ireland. Meanwhile, Spike, a Canadian teen, finds out that her father has died, and she is being sent to live with a distant relative, a woman who tends the lighthouse on Last Chance Island. Spike can't wait to escape and join a troupe of musicians she's met in Dublin. But one day, she discovers the two stranded kids in desperate need of help. Will she change her plans to try to save them? Book Trailer: https://youtu.be/5qqwAPgEJ9I

- Description
- This activity will fill the requirements set forth by the BC curriculum that at the grade 5 level, students in Core French should be able to know French phonemes; and this is all part of the ability to say the number of the date of your birthday, and the month, correctly. The curriculum also states that students be able to participate in simple interactions dealing with daily life. Knowing one`s birthday is often information that is asked and shared, especially amongst younger people. Finally, the curriculum states that students at the grade 5 Core French level be able to convey basic information about themselves, and there are many instances in which being able to identify your date of birth is not only useful, but necessary.

- This activity hopes to bring to life some of the many immigration stories that contribute to Canada's past, present and future. With research, art and some level of performing arts, this activity is designed to be interdisciplinary and engaging for students to understand perspective, and how the change and continuity of Canadian immigration patterns have helped shape our nation. In addition to various assessments that will accompany this activity, students will be given a reflection sheet after the presentations. This will allow them to voice any strengths or stretches they encountered during the activity, and provide their teacher with any mitigating factors that they think should be taken into account during assessment.
