- Description
- This is meant as an enrichment activity to dovetail with BC’s resources and economy. Also, it will demonstrate that while treaties, residential schools and the Indian Act set back and damaged Aboriginal culture and development, there are Aboriginal success stories. The lessons bring in themes of good resource management in BC. This offers some enrichment in business planning.

- In this unit, students will create their own “All About Me” book — about themselves, their families, and their community. They will be gathering information over several weeks and storing it in their own individual file folders. They will have special visitors and visit local landmarks in the community. In the end, they will put all their work together to create a book. They will celebrate the completion of their book at a “Meet the Author” afternoon with their caregivers.

- Description
- Blue Planet Links (www.blueplanetlinks.ca) organizes over 300 links to water-related websites, books and articles, featuring a fresh look and the most up-to-date design. We are poised to be the go-to teaching resource for all things H20. See Teaching Resources to explore a countless array of unit lessons for different grades, or check out Non-Fiction and Activities for classroom games and projects. Older students could be encouraged to use the site for research as we feature sections with links devoted to such topics as aquaculture, climate change, groundwater, pollution; almost every water-related topic you can think of. Water is becoming a heavier topic to discuss in the classroom as it is over-used and abused. Students are learning of severe droughts, plastic-filled oceans, decreasing salmon runs… and are rightfully asking questions. Blue Planet Links puts the resources to thoughtfully engage with these critical issues at your fingertips, and theirs!

- Description
- As the new BC curriculum promotes a more inquiry-based approach to learning, the need to develop diverse digital literacies becomes even more crucial. But how can we keep up when new apps and programs keep popping up? In this PowerPoint used as part of his 2017 PSA Superconference keynote presentation, Ron Darvin talks about getting past an app-centred paradigm and to go back to what is at the core of digital literacy so that we can teach our students to be truly literate in the 21st century.

These education resources, lessons and worksheets aim to educate students about the characteristics of cats and dogs and their needs as domesticated animals. The lessons, student reading, video and activities provide more than just facts about cats and dogs. They help students understand the unique relationships these animals have shared with people for thousands of years. The lesson plans and activities also encourage your students to examine and discuss the important responsibilities people have in caring for cats and dogs and the many different ways that people live with these animals around the world, from country to country and culture to culture.

- Description
- This text is illustrated with updated graphs, photos and cites the work of hundreds of scientists and organizations such as the IPCC, NASA, Environment Canada, Royal Society of Canada, and Natural Resources Canada, to name a few. My resource is an update on the science of climate change, extreme weather, protecting nature and biodiversity, advancing renewable energy, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions with frequent reference to Canada and in particular British Columbia. Global impacts, mitigation and adaptation are explained throughout the text. My ten years of research cites reputable journals, national and international organizations and the media. Research covers climate change from the Arctic to the Antarctic, projection of climate change, how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, El Nino/La Nina, extreme weather, renewables, the oil sands and transport of bitumen, and Canada's contribution at the UN COP meetings. This book is meant as a resource for our youths to make wise decisions about their future. **Revised edition uploaded September 2019.

- This Climate Justice in BC resource package was designed to provide teachers with classroom-ready materials to engage their students with how climate action intersects with social justice. The curriculum features eight modules designed for students in Grades 8 to 12 that explore climate justice within the context of BC’s communities history, economy and ecology. These lessons tie into subject matter and prescribed learning outcomes (PLOs) already in BC’s curriculum, while providing a framework with which to unpack modern social and environmental issues, such as our industrial food system, consumerism and waste, transportation, and the development of a green economy.

- Description
- The core competencies along with literacy and numeracy foundations and essential content and concepts are at the centre of the redesign of curriculum and assessment. Core competencies are sets of intellectual, personal, and social and emotional proficiencies that all students need to develop in order to engage in deep learning and life-long learning. Through provincial consultation, three core competencies were identified. Posters created by the BC Ministry of Education.

- Description
- Electric current is the flow of electrons through a complete circuit of conductors. It is used to power everything from our lights to our trains. In these activities, students will explore different kinds of circuits and investigate what is required to make a complete circuit.

- Description
- In this activity, students investigate the fascinating and complex process of decomposition and lay the foundation for deeper understanding of concepts related to matter and energy transfer in ecosystems. Through exploration and discussion, students go beyond simple definitions. Instead, students discover key characteristics of decomposition as they struggle with creating a sequence for decomposing wood and leaves. They learn the difference between physical decomposition and chemical decomposition and that many things contribute to decomposition, but certain organisms are classified as decomposers. They also search for and discuss evidence of decomposers, make model diagrams to further develop their ideas about the process of decomposition, and discuss decomposition and its role in the cycling of matter. Finally, students are challenged to recognize the evidence and impact of decomposition in the ecosystems they explore.

- Learning Standards
- Students will: - Explore, observe, and compare samples of decomposing materials and use reasoning to determine the level of decomposition among them - Search for and classify decomposers (or evidence of them) as fungi, bacteria or invertebrates - Investigate and discuss decomposition as the process of breaking down dead organisms and their waste materials into smaller and simpler forms of matter - Create a model diagram for the process of decomposition - Discuss the role decomposers play in making matter available to living plants
