Description
Animals are vulnerable beings in that they are subjected to situations beyond their control. Using animals as a bridge to discuss social justice issues can be a way to ease students into more sensitive and personal social justice issues such as racism and stereotyping. Included in this package are some outlined activities and discussion questions that should get the conversation started. These are designed to encourage students to think critically about where their beliefs and ideas come from and help them in their future discussions about issues involving people in society, as well as give them a chance to reflect on their own views on animals.

For decades, people have debated the question: Is there a Scientific Basis for Race? The answer is…still under discussion. Many argue that race is socially constructed and that we are all part of the same human race. At the same time, scientists continue to research health issues, like sickle-cell anemia or diabetes, that impact some racial communities more than others. Why? Your assignment is to explore a topic in which Scientists have explored or had to address the idea of race! This could be with regards to medicine, sports, public health, scientific testing, genetics, and more.

Voices into Action is an online, bilingual, ERAC approved curriculum-based educational resource providing students with information on issues regarding human rights, prejudice, and hatred. Designed by curriculum experts, this program utilizes a wide variety of media (short documentary style films and compelling visuals) to present information on a history of human suffering, stemming from social injustice that is still a growing problem today. While meeting curriculum requirements, you can help students become better people, and make your classroom a better place for learning. Our media resources, along with teacher-led dialogue, give students many perspectives to consider, with opportunities for critical thinking and creative response. By understanding the history of human rights issues in Canada and around the world, they will also gain insight into current issues that occur in their world and their classrooms.
