Description
This lesson is suitable for Social Studies classes studying the First World War and the Canadian Home Front as well as curriculum examining gender and racial tensions in the work force of early British Columbia. The time period of the lesson is set in the closing months of the war and the early recovery period from the Great War to early 1919. Additional overlapping intrigues to the women struggling for fair wages and better working conditions in the steam laundries of Vancouver was the death of Ginger Goodwin and the threats of a General Strike raised by the Vancouver Trades and Labour Council, as well as the onset of the Spanish Influenza Pandemic. The lesson materials also examine the racial conflict between the steam laundries and the Chinese hand laundries. Critical thinking and the use of primary sources are at the core of the lesson activities.

Description
Species at Risk Workshops are fun, hands-on, and solutions-oriented conservation workshops that focus on four species at risk in the Salish Sea: Southern Resident Killer Whales, Steller Sea Lions, Basking Sharks, and Leatherback Sea Turtles. These are a series of three inquiry-based workshops, that can be delivered virtually (the educator live streams to a class) or in-person for Grades 4-12. Students brainstorm and implement impactful stewardship projects to engage their schools and communities in aquatic species conservation. Workshops are designed to encourage critical thinking, personal awareness, and social responsibility. For virtual delivery, students are engaged through interactive tools such as Kahoot.

Learning Standards
Students are empowered to make changes in their everyday lives to help reduce human-caused threats to species at risk and our oceans. Through their Youth Action Team projects, they are able to see how their actions have real-world impacts. Students learn to be aware of the personal choices they make in their daily lives, and how they can contribute to their communities and make the world a better place. This is all taught through the lens of ocean conservation, with a focus on four species at risk that live in the Salish Sea. Students learn how their actions can impact these animals. Creative/Critical Thinking - I can learn a lot about something new, consider different perspectives, generate and develop new ideas, and implement them in real life (students brainstorm and participate in group discussions about solutions to threats to species at risk) Communication - I can share and develop ideas with others, take on roles and responsibilities with a group, summarize key ideas and present what I have learned (achieved through Youth Action Team projects and presentations in Workshop 3) Personal & Social Responsibility - I can explain what my values are and how they affect the choices that I make, I can participate in classroom and group activities to improve the wellbeing of myself, my community, and the natural world (achieved through Youth Action Team projects that are implemented in the community to benefit the natural world)

Blue Planet Links (www.blueplanetlinks.ca) organizes over 300 links to water-related websites, books and articles, featuring a fresh look and the most up-to-date design. We are poised to be the go-to teaching resource for all things H20. See Teaching Resources to explore a countless array of unit lessons for different grades, or check out Non-Fiction and Activities for classroom games and projects. Older students could be encouraged to use the site for research as we feature sections with links devoted to such topics as aquaculture, climate change, groundwater, pollution; almost every water-related topic you can think of. Water is becoming a heavier topic to discuss in the classroom as it is over-used and abused. Students are learning of severe droughts, plastic-filled oceans, decreasing salmon runs… and are rightfully asking questions. Blue Planet Links puts the resources to thoughtfully engage with these critical issues at your fingertips, and theirs!

Description
Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "By Women, For Women” from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. In the 1970s, more women entered into the workforce and sought ways to become organized. One union that formed in British Columbia—the Service, Office, and Retail Workers' Union of Canada—is the subject of this film. Students gain an appreciation of women’s issues in the workplace in the 1970s—and learn more about an attempt to organize a union in the banks by the independent union SORWUC--through a simulation of a union organizing drive. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. Cultures around the world may vary, but one thing is common: wherever we find people, we also find cats and dogs. These education resources, lessons and worksheets aim to educate students about the characteristics of cats and dogs and their needs as domesticated animals. The lessons, student reading, video and activities provide more than just facts about cats and dogs. They help students understand the unique relationships these animals have shared with people for thousands of years. The lesson plans and activities also encourage your students to examine and discuss the important responsibilities people have in caring for cats and dogs and the many different ways that people live with these animals around the world, from country to country and culture to culture.

Description
This text is illustrated with updated graphs, photos and cites the work of hundreds of scientists and organizations such as the IPCC, NASA, Environment Canada, Royal Society of Canada, and Natural Resources Canada, to name a few. My resource is an update on the science of climate change, extreme weather, protecting nature and biodiversity, advancing renewable energy, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions with frequent reference to Canada and in particular British Columbia. Global impacts, mitigation and adaptation are explained throughout the text. My ten years of research cites reputable journals, national and international organizations and the media. Research covers climate change from the Arctic to the Antarctic, projection of climate change, how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, El Nino/La Nina, extreme weather, renewables, the oil sands and transport of bitumen, and Canada's contribution at the UN COP meetings. This book is meant as a resource for our youths to make wise decisions about their future. **Revised edition uploaded October 2020.
