The vignette explores the prejudices and racism experienced by Chinese Canadians in the late 19th-early 20th century. Trained as a lawyer but unable to practice law, Won Alexander Cumyow becomes an advocate for the rights of Chinese immigrants in British Columbia. This material can also be used as a background resource for the topic of the Head Tax and the Asiatic Exclusion laws in early 20th Century Canada found in the Social Studies 11 course. - Learning for Life is an education initiative that aims to develop the various aspects of digital health literacy and promote healthy lifestyle behaviours among upper elementary students and families in BC. Learning for Life provides students with the competencies to use technology to support their health, to critically assess information provided through technology, and to balance the helpfulness of technology with the promotion of healthy lifestyle behaviours (using Canadian guidelines). The initiative was created by a group of researchers in UBC Faculty of Medicine's Digital Emergency Medicine Office who explore and advance the use of information and communication technologies to connect people to quality health information. Learning for Life resources have been collaboratively developed with a multi-sectoral, inter-professional panel of education, clinical and public health experts. Learning for Life offers a suite of resources for grade 4-7 teachers. These resources include two accessible and easy-to-use teacher toolkits with lesson plans connected to the K-9 core competencies. Activities for students include in-class and take-home activities, along with exciting online choose-your-own-adventure graphic novels!

- Link to Laura Candler's File Cabinet on Cooperative Learning: Cooperative learning is a powerful teaching strategy that's more than just a passing fad. Research has shown that when implemented properly, students in cooperative learning classrooms outperform their peers in traditional classrooms. The key is knowing how to implement the strategies to foster interaction while making sure all students are held accountable. Dr. Spencer Kagan developed the "structural" approach to cooperative learning, and I've found it to be extremely effective. I highly recommend his book Cooperative Learning which is available from Amazon.com.

Designed for first-time renters, the course covers both practical and legal topics to consider before deciding to rent. Students can complete activities such as creating a budget, thinking about their housing needs, preparing a list of references, writing a cover letter and pet resume, and ordering a credit report. The course is video-based, and sections can be viewed in any order. Students who complete the course and pass the final exam earn a certificate that can be presented to landlords when they apply for tenancy. - Dancing Backwards Society's free, downloadable school program, www.dancingbackwards.ca, celebrates Canada's women in political leadership and Indigenous women in governance. This online course for teachers of grades 5-8 focuses on engaged citizenship, gender equality, and the need for gender parity in decision making. The program provides teachers with multi-media lesson plans and activities that culminate in a final project in which students discover and document the story of one political woman in leadership or governance in Canada. Their 3-minute storytellings are then added to the website’s ever-expanding Her Story Archive, cementing women’s political contributions into history. It’s intended to give students Grades 8 to 12 the opportunity to learn about species at risk in British Columbia in their local environment, understand the threats and identify what they can do to help. Module 1 is an introduction to species at risk while Module 2 specifically focuses on amphibians. Each module uses a project-based learning approach where students will be introduced to the topic, then develop field investigative skills and participate in citizen science. Our resource contains links to valuable multimedia resources as well as ideas to help students connect with species at risk in their community.

- Printing Like a Pro! Printing Like a Pro! is a free cognitively-based printing program for the primary grades. It is evidence-based and designed for classroom use and for use with students who have printing/handwriting challenges. This program uses a developmental framework, teaching letters from easiest to hardest to form. Cognitive strategies include use of self-talk, and self-reflection and evaluation with a focus on key strategies for neat printing. Worksheet sets include letters, words, and sight word sentences as well as numbers. - Be the Change Earth Alliance (Vancouver-based Charity) Climate and Connection Unit with 15 Action Packs focused on Environmental and Social Justice, which any teacher can access for free when they sign up online. Where these come from our Student Leadership for Change suite of 40 Action Packs, teachers in your district already using them can update their account to access. Each Action Pack includes a fillable PDF students can work on and send back and can easily be distributed through platforms such as Microsoft Teams. Students explore their world views, connect global issues to a local context and take action appropriate for social distancing before tying it all together through critical reflection. Our curriculum embraces First People’s Principles of Learning and Teachers can see BC course connections and how each pack meets Core Competencies. The revisions attempt to reduce screen time and encourage experiential learning and social connection.

The articles are designed to be used individually in the Social Studies 10 and Social Studies 11 course. Teachers can supplement the reading activity with selected lessons from the Working People: A History of Labour in BC lessons that will be posted here. Additionally, the video series The Edge of the World: B.C.'s Early Years has a number of segments that compliment the reading for the 1840-1914 time period.

- The materials address aspects of the key learning standards of the current social studies 10 and 11 curriculums. For Social Studies 10, critical thinking skills are applied throughout as well as research and writing skills as described in the “skills and processes of social studies”. Aspects of “Identity, Society and Culture” are addressed in the materials including gender roles, ethnicity and daily life as well the interactions of Aboriginal peoples in early Canada. Elements of the “Economy and Technology” learning outcomes are discussed in the examination of resource development and technological innovations. Additionally, aspects of the environmental impact and attitudes towards resource extraction are developed as they relate to the “Environment” learning outcome of the IRP. Regarding Social Studies 11, the areas of the “skills and processes of social studies” apply throughout as well as aspects of how Canadians can affect change at the federal and provincial levels of government. In the later examples of the reading the impact of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms are reflected in the work. The role of workers in both World War I and II and aspects of the “Autonomy and International Involvement” aspect of the IRP . The material can also be affectively applied to the “Society and Culture” of the curriculum addressing the development and impact of social policies and programs, the role of the labour movement in Canada and specifically the role of women in social, political and economic change in Canada.
