- Everyone has a unique story to share. Stories help us learn about ourselves, our families, and other people. Curiosity and wonder leads us to new discoveries about ourselves and the world around us. By reading “And Tango Makes Three”, we not only learn about penguins and the penguin life cycle, but about other family structures (i.e. same-sex families) and how same-sex couples can become parents. This lesson plan can be used cross-curricula with Socials, PHE, ELA, and may also be used in Science (i.e. if combined with a stronger focus on the penguin life cycle, habitat, etc.)

- Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "Bows and Arrows” from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. The vignette explores the role of Aboriginal workers in the early years of the Port of Vancouver and the struggle for racial equality in the labour movement. The life of Bill Nahanee and the early years of the IWW (Industrial Workers of the World) are also featured in this lesson. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. In original five-minute documentary videos, narratives of historical events are described first-hand by survivors. Written by teachers for teachers, the lessons are easy to use, thought-provoking and powerful. Minority groups such as Jews, Muslims, Sikhs and First Nations are represented in the resource to offer students a wide range of perspectives and well-rounded education on the topics presented. Students are encouraged to speak up against all injustices and not be bystanders. Teachers register for free (always).

- This worksheet is a fun way for students to bring home their French skills (easily done in other languages) over the winter holidays. Once students have a rudimentary understanding of how to do the past tense in French (Le Passé Composé), they can X out any of the items on the Bingo card and also add other activities they did over the holidays in the target language. Students can submit their Bingo card after they return in the new year.

My resource is an update on the science of climate change, extreme weather, protecting nature and biodiversity, advancing renewable energy, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions with frequent reference to Canada and in particular British Columbia. Global impacts, mitigation and adaptation are explained throughout the text. My ten years of research cites reputable journals, national and international organizations and the media. Research covers climate change from the Arctic to the Antarctic, projection of climate change, how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, El Nino/La Nina, extreme weather, renewables, the oil sands and transport of bitumen, and Canada's contribution at the UN COP meetings. Critical thinking skills are applied throughout as well as research and writing skills as described in the “skills and processes of social studies”. Aspects of “Identity, Society and Culture” are addressed in the materials including gender roles, ethnicity and daily life as well the interactions of Aboriginal peoples in early Canada. Elements of the “Economy and Technology” learning outcomes are discussed in the examination of resource development and technological innovations. Additionally, aspects of the environmental impact and attitudes towards resource extraction are developed as they relate to the “Environment” learning outcome of the IRP.

The educational resources are the result of a collaborative effort between the graduate school class (summer 2008) of Dr. Jan Stewart, Director of the Institute for War-Affected Children at Global College, University of Winnipeg and Médecins Sans Frontières/ Doctors Without Borders (MSF). The materials were developed based upon an earlier MSF educational publication: “A Refugee Camp in the City, On Assignment” Teachers Guide, MSF Canada (2003). We hope these five lesson plans will encourage students to continue to learn and understand the challenges more than 50 million refugees and internally displaced people face worldwide

- In 2002, two American fighter pilots, Major Harry Schmidt and Major William Umbach, killed four Canadian soldiers near Kandahar, Afghanistan, because the pilots mistakenly thought the Canadian soldiers were shooting at them. Their court defense attributed the pilots’ actions to the Air Force-issued stimulant drugs they were taking at the time. The pilots had been taking the stimulant Dexedrine during the flight, under the standard-order guidelines of their commander. Today, when pilots are finished with their missions, they are provided with Ambien or Restoril, the “no-pills,” to bring them down and help them sleep and adjust after defying the body’s circadian rhythms and altering neurotransmitter levels with amphetamines. The lawyer for Major Schmidt noted that the depressant sleep aid Ambien, which was given to Schmidt to help him sleep before the mission, also affected his mental state when he bombed the Canadians.

The articles are designed to be used individually in the Social Studies 10 and Social Studies 11 course. The role of workers in both World War I and II and aspects of the “Autonomy and International Involvement” aspect of the IRP . The material can also be affectively applied to the “Society and Culture” of the curriculum addressing the development and impact of social policies and programs, the role of the labour movement in Canada and specifically the role of women in social, political and economic change in Canada.

- Link to Laura Candler's File Cabinet on Cooperative Learning: Cooperative learning is a powerful teaching strategy that's more than just a passing fad. Research has shown that when implemented properly, students in cooperative learning classrooms outperform their peers in traditional classrooms. The key is knowing how to implement the strategies to foster interaction while making sure all students are held accountable. Dr. Spencer Kagan developed the "structural" approach to cooperative learning, and I've found it to be extremely effective. I highly recommend his book Cooperative Learning which is available from Amazon.com.

Participants in this workshop will learn how the MakerEd movement with a STEAM focus is an effective way to integrate the Applied Design, Skills and Technology (ADST) curriculum into their classroom or school. We will explore the various buzzwords, resources, tools, technologies and potential assessment strategies found in classroom based makerspaces. - Students are invited to create a survival plan of what they would need to survive if they were to live outside in their local habitat. They can only take from the earth and land and must consider factors like season, weather, habitat and ecosystem. "Netukulimk explains Mi’kmaw ways of life, tying together social and economic practices with systems of governance through time. Living in harmony, and taking only what you need, is the true essence of Indigenous ways of being and living." (Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre). Our linked video explores the concept in an accessible way for children and teenagers. Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre has an extensive guide about Teaching About the Mi'kmaq (pdf). This activity is one of our Indigenous perspectives content pieces. More to come. This activity is one of our Inquiry-tools (activities that encourage students to think about what they know and how they learn).

- Printing Like a Pro! Printing Like a Pro! is a free cognitively-based printing program for the primary grades. It is evidence-based and designed for classroom use and for use with students who have printing/handwriting challenges. This program uses a developmental framework, teaching letters from easiest to hardest to form. Cognitive strategies include use of self-talk, and self-reflection and evaluation with a focus on key strategies for neat printing. Worksheet sets include letters, words, and sight word sentences as well as numbers. - Living in a Good Way with Dogs: Our Stories, is an educational resource created by First Nations specifically for First Nations' learners. Stories about dogs shared by First Nations Elders and community role models form the foundation of the materials, bringing to life their experiences and wisdom. This Overview outlines the resources. There are six units in the program, each with a special focus that is relevant for students from kindergarten to grade eight. Entire units or single activities can be used to accommodate your audience. Through Elder teachings, tales from role models, histories of First Nations’ relationships with dogs, and fun activities, students learn to build healthy and safe relationships with their four leggeds. Each unit comes with an instructor guide, student activity book and audio recordings from Elders and role models. A set of posters provides students with a visual reference for important concepts in each unit.

- Be the Change Earth Alliance (Vancouver-based Charity) Climate and Connection Unit with 15 Action Packs focused on Environmental and Social Justice, which any teacher can access for free when they sign up online. Where these come from our Student Leadership for Change suite of 40 Action Packs, teachers in your district already using them can update their account to access. Each Action Pack includes a fillable PDF students can work on and send back and can easily be distributed through platforms such as Microsoft Teams. Students explore their world views, connect global issues to a local context and take action appropriate for social distancing before tying it all together through critical reflection. Our curriculum embraces First People’s Principles of Learning and Teachers can see BC course connections and how each pack meets Core Competencies. The revisions attempt to reduce screen time and encourage experiential learning and social connection.
