- Description
- In this unit, students will create their own “All About Me” book — about themselves, their families, and their community. They will be gathering information over several weeks and storing it in their own individual file folders. They will have special visitors and visit local landmarks in the community. In the end, they will put all their work together to create a book. They will celebrate the completion of their book at a “Meet the Author” afternoon with their caregivers.

- Description
- Everyone has a unique story to share. Stories help us learn about ourselves, our families, and other people. Curiosity and wonder leads us to new discoveries about ourselves and the world around us. By reading “And Tango Makes Three”, we not only learn about penguins and the penguin life cycle, but about other family structures (i.e. same-sex families) and how same-sex couples can become parents. This lesson plan can be used cross-curricula with Socials, PHE, ELA, and may also be used in Science (i.e. if combined with a stronger focus on the penguin life cycle, habitat, etc.)

- Description
- Bullets, Blood and Stones: the journey of a child soldier, brings students face to face with the child soldier situation that occurred in Uganda when infamous warlord, Joseph Kony, abducted 60,000 children and forced them to join his Lord’s Resistance Army. Teachers who have used this book in their classrooms note that student interest is high as the story is fast paced and the characters are very relatable. Real life events in the book provide a perfect teaching opportunity to contrast the lives of children in other parts of the world and challenge the way in which students view themselves and their place in society. Although events in the story are horrifying, there are moments of warmth and humour that are uplifting and give hope to the human condition. Teaching resources, including chapter by chapter discussion questions, activities, and a power point presentation, are available on the resource page of White’s website.

- Description
- The Canadian Letters and Images Project is an online archive of the Canadian war experience, from any war, as told through the letters and images of Canadians themselves. Begun in August 2000, the Project is located in the Department of History at Vancouver Island University. Through the digitization of contemporary letters, diaries, photographs, and other related materials, the Project permits Canadians to tell their story, and Canada’s story, through their own words and images. The Teacher's Guide contains 12 English Language Arts and Social Studies lessons that support curricular competencies associated with historical thinking.

These education resources, lessons and worksheets aim to educate students about the characteristics of cats and dogs and their needs as domesticated animals. The lessons, student reading, video and activities provide more than just facts about cats and dogs. They help students understand the unique relationships these animals have shared with people for thousands of years. The lesson plans and activities also encourage your students to examine and discuss the important responsibilities people have in caring for cats and dogs and the many different ways that people live with these animals around the world, from country to country and culture to culture.

- Here is a cross-curricular unit on the diversity of living things and where they live. It includes lessons that explore living and non-living things; the differences between a need and want; and the biomes within Canada. There are lessons for outside, in the class, and computer labs with the intention of inquiry and student driven learning. Included is the interactive student notebook, a test, and an assessment for a 3D biome box project - with the intention that all 3 items are weighed evenly when accumulating evidence of learning.

- This unit provides an opportunity for teachers and students to select from a mix of dramatic texts (stage plays, screenplays, films) that reflect First Peoples themes and perspectives. Opportunities for memorization (internalization) of text and for polishing of oral delivery skills are one important aspect of the unit. Students are also encouraged to reflect on the production realities associated with these types of texts.

- Description
- This project is a process by which students learn about a First Peoples issue or topic and communicate their knowledge to others. Many students are unaware that their lives are inextricably linked with the lives of First Peoples all over the world. We all live on the planet, we all share in the resources of the earth, and we must all take responsibility for our actions. Nobody can live in isolation. The world will be a better place when all of us work together to make it so. By doing this research project, students will become spokespersons for an ethical, humane, and fair Earth. The range of topics covered shows the students that everybody has a role to play in making the world a wholesome and happy place to live. We all must come to understand each other.

- Description
- The poetry chosen for study in this unit is primarily written in English, although some of the poets include words and lines from songs in their native languages. Students will hear voices from many diverse First Peoples communities but they will easily recognize a commonality of world view in the themes of the poems: respect for and appreciation of the natural environment, the importance of relations with family and community, trust in the wisdom of Elders, the power that comes from the spirit world, and the devastating impact of colonization. Students will also recognize that the structures and poetic devices used in crafting this poetry is similar to poetry written by non-First Peoples writers, but that the voices of the poets and their imagery is distinctly different.

- This extensive novel study introduces students to Maria Campbell’s Halfbreed, a ground-breaking work not only for the Métis, but also in terms of raising awareness of issues for all Canadian Aboriginal peoples. Questions of identity in the novel link to history and family, and in more contemporary times to extended social community.

- Description
- This unit is designed as a series of parts loosely based on literary form; there are parts for drama, film, radio, and written text. Primarily, humour is found in the performance form, hence the focus on performance; humour found in the written form is more subtle. This unit can be taught in conjunction with the Trickster Unit; however, the units exist as separate entities. The trickster figure appears in many literary forms; sometimes he is funny, sometimes not. To link together the Humour and Trickster Units, there is a cumulative concept map assignment (see Unit 11: Trickster) to which students may add as each part is completed. The idea of a concept map can be very difficult for students to grasp however, so the idea is introduced in the Only Drunks and Children Tell the Truth lessons on a smaller scale, and is revisited again on an even smaller scale as a plot outline in Humour in the Written Form.

- Description
- Identity is a frequently explored theme in Aboriginal literature; as such, identity can easily become the focus for studying many texts. In this unit, Richard Wagamese’s novel Keeper’n Me is the central text studied by all students in the class, using a literature circle technique. Other texts such as short stories, poetry, and essays can also be examined in order to enrich the theme of identity begun by reading the novel. In order to allow students reading time between literature circle sessions, the other literary forms are presented as parts, or strands, of the unit. The following “Scope and Sequence” chart is included as a suggested approach for conducting a thematic unit on identity using multiple texts, though all parts of the unit need not be taught.

- Description
- The introductory unit sets the context for the course, with a particular emphasis on establishing awareness of First Peoples pedagogy and of the key features that make this course unique. Given the unique nature of this course, it is important for the teacher to establish a classroom environment that is welcoming and supportive. This unit includes a variety of activities for teachers to work with, including opportunities for community building, establishing the ground rules for respectful contribution and handling conflict, understanding and beginning to work with First Peoples’ pedagogical approaches, and much more. Much of the work of this unit involves students participating in small and large group discussion, as well personal response writing.

- Description
- The Métis have often been called The Forgotten People because they have been marginalized in history through exclusion from the governmental financial structures that feature in First Nations communities, and from broad treaty-land claims processes. Often there is a lot of confusion about who the Métis were and are. This introduction will give students and teachers a sense of Métis history and culture from the historic fur trading days to contemporary times as well as raise broader questions about nationhood and personal identity.

- Description
- Our Ancestors and Our Dogs is part of a program about dogs and First Nations. It is about how the First Peoples of North America have lived with dogs for a long time. You will meet Elders and others who share their stories about dogs and about caring for dogs. All of these people love and respect dogs and so they have shared their ideas about dogs with you. All are First Nations (Swampy Cree, Anishinaabe). We are proud to have them share about our peoples and our good ways with dogs. This unit is focused on learning about the ancestors of dogs and how our ancestors lived well with dogs. It explains how dogs have always been part of the life of First Nations People and how our relationship with dogs is changing. It tells how our feelings for dogs are important. It tells us how to care for our dogs so that we can live with them safely and respectfully.
