- The year is 1841 and the Act of Union has just been signed. The last four or five years have been very chaotic in the Canadas and now that the rebellions, the Durham Report, and the Act of Union are in the past, it is time to look back and create a commemorative magazine about this important time in Canadian history.

- Everyone has a unique story to share. Stories help us learn about ourselves, our families, and other people. Curiosity and wonder leads us to new discoveries about ourselves and the world around us. By reading “And Tango Makes Three”, we not only learn about penguins and the penguin life cycle, but about other family structures (i.e. same-sex families) and how same-sex couples can become parents. This lesson plan can be used cross-curricula with Socials, PHE, ELA, and may also be used in Science (i.e. if combined with a stronger focus on the penguin life cycle, habitat, etc.)

- Step one: Have students look at a picture for clues to answer who, what, where, when, why and how questions about the battle depicted in the picture. Step two: Have students examine primary sources (9 sources available). Teacher may choose to have students look at all 9 or allow students to select 6 to look at. Students will try to piece together the causes and components of the incident depicted in the picture presented in step one. Step three: Offer students a secondary source on the battle of Seven Oaks in order that they gain an overview of the Battle of Seven Oaks. I recommend TC2's Snapshots of Nineteenth Century Canada for this. Step four: Present the Culminating Task where students can create a short story, a new broadcast or a skit depicting an interpretation of stories behind the Battle of Seven Oaks. There is an assessment rubric provided and a self/team evaluation sheet. Make this your own. It is a lot of fun. I have tried it!

- Description
- The Canadian Letters and Images Project is an online archive of the Canadian war experience, from any war, as told through the letters and images of Canadians themselves. Begun in August 2000, the Project is located in the Department of History at Vancouver Island University. Through the digitization of contemporary letters, diaries, photographs, and other related materials, the Project permits Canadians to tell their story, and Canada’s story, through their own words and images. The Teacher's Guide contains 12 English Language Arts and Social Studies lessons that support curricular competencies associated with historical thinking.

- Description
- Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "Canning Salmon” from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. The vignette explores the lives of cannery workers in the early part of the 20th century. The vignette is in the format of a visual essay and uses song to tell the story of life in a coastal cannery. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. - Cultures around the world may vary, but one thing is common: wherever we find people, we also find cats and dogs. These education resources, lessons and worksheets aim to educate students about the characteristics of cats and dogs and their needs as domesticated animals. The lessons, student reading, video and activities provide more than just facts about cats and dogs. They help students understand the unique relationships these animals have shared with people for thousands of years. The lesson plans and activities also encourage your students to examine and discuss the important responsibilities people have in caring for cats and dogs and the many different ways that people live with these animals around the world, from country to country and culture to culture.

- Description
- This activity will involve analyzing textual primary sources about Chinese immigration during the mid to late 1800s in Canada. The purpose of this activity is to give students practice in analyzing digital primary sources, to understand the context in which the sources were made, and to investigate the causes and consequences of opinions and actions on economic, political, social, and cultural historical practices. Incorporating sources from UBC Library’s Open Collections into your classroom can help students build their historical thinking through analyzing, contextualizing, and inferring using historical texts.

- Dancing Backwards Society's free, downloadable school program, www.dancingbackwards.ca, celebrates Canada's women in political leadership and Indigenous women in governance. This online course for teachers of grades 5-8 focuses on engaged citizenship, gender equality, and the need for gender parity in decision making. The program provides teachers with multi-media lesson plans and activities that culminate in a final project in which students discover and document the story of one political woman in leadership or governance in Canada. Their 3-minute storytellings are then added to the website’s ever-expanding Her Story Archive, cementing women’s political contributions into history. Dancing Backwards satisfies various curriculum criteria for BC and all other provinces in Social Studies, English, Arts Education, and History (https://www.dancingbackwards.ca/the-program/learning-standards-outcomes-by-province

- This assignment creates awareness around homophobic bullying in secondary schools and the devastating consequences it has for some youth. Furthermore, it encourages students to promote a learning environment that is welcoming and accepting of everyone. After hearing some of the statistics around LGBTQ youth suicide and depression, students will learn about the “It Gets Better” project started by Dan Savage, an author and newspaper columnist from the USA. This project asks students to reflect on the harmful effects of homophobic bullying and invites them to promote a school environment that allows people to be themselves free of judgment and harassment. - Students should have some cursory knowledge of World War II prior to doing this activity. The students begin by reading the “Dieppe Raid” essay created by Veterans Canada. The students then watch the video (link provided in the instructions) where veterans of the raid speak about their experiences. The students then complete the questions. You may choose to split this activity in half. You may also choose to covert and combine all files into a single PDF. I am providing a single-point rubric, but this can be easily modified to meet your needs. Please feel free to modify the activity as you see fit. The lesson is meant to evoke students to empathize with the soldiers, and to consider the cost of battles, as well as their signficance.

- Description
- Prior to the invention of the printing press in 1440, originals and copies of books about drugs (and every other topic) were laboriously written down by hand. This was no easy task given the length of some of the world’s classic medical and science texts such as the five-volume encyclopedia of herbal medicine, De Materia Medica, penned by Pedanius Dioscorides between 40-80 CE. After the printing press became more mainstream, information about alcohol (and other drugs) flowed more freely and easily, as did the alcohol itself. For example, in 1512 CE, Hieronymus Braunschweig published The Big Book on Distillation. Soon afterward, distilling alcohol moved from the realm of monasteries and apothecaries to include artisans and merchants. An alcohol industry was being born. This was followed by a rise in alcohol consumption.

- Description
- The Echo Project is about exploring an aspect of 20th century Canadian history through a generational lens. This is done by making a personal connection to the past through interviews and scouring intimate primary documents such as family journals, letters, and photographs as well as what students find with broader research. Students think critically about sources and patterns, develop historical empathy, and get creative with how they represent the past. While many students choose topics related to the World War II era, they may discover they have ties to stories and events before or after the war such as the Great Depression of the 1930s or the Postwar era of the 1950s and 60s.
