Description
The Healthy Habits Challenge is a 30 day initiative where students can track 6 healthy habits on an online platform. Data is sent weekly to teachers. The Healthy Habits notes are: healthy eating, physical activity, screen time, water intake, sleep time, and mental health (journaling). Challenges are run three times per year and classes or whole schools can sign up. The entire challenge is turnkey and all resources are FREE. The challenges are supported by our team, our resources, and prizes can include athlete visits, gym banners for most active schools, and much more. The goal of the challenges are to instil healthy habits at the elementary school age and allow the students to learn about accountability and goal setting while providing data on progress.

I followed a student outside and captured an ordinary moment. I reflected on what I saw. I talked to another teacher for their thoughts. I talked to the parent of the student for their thoughts. I connected his learning with the curriculum and thought about what I would do in the classroom to further his learning and the learning of others. A pedagogical narration is the process and framework I used to make learning visible.

Link to Laura Candler's File Cabinet on Cooperative Learning: Cooperative learning is a powerful teaching strategy that's more than just a passing fad. Research has shown that when implemented properly, students in cooperative learning classrooms outperform their peers in traditional classrooms. The key is knowing how to implement the strategies to foster interaction while making sure all students are held accountable. Dr. Spencer Kagan developed the "structural" approach to cooperative learning, and I've found it to be extremely effective. I highly recommend his book Cooperative Learning which is available from Amazon.com.

Through our work in over 20 countries, including in 88 of Canada's Indigenous communities, we have become an internationally recognized leader in the field of education and children's rights. In 2015, Right To Play partnered with Global Affairs Canada to develop the "Play Your Part" education initiative for Canadian elementary schools. Last year, we delivered this program in 215 Canadian schools in 7 provinces. Canadian Prime Ministers come to life! There are two series of videos being currently made by this YouTube Channel. The first is a long version of each PM (between 6-12 minutes each) which incorporates all different aspects of history, including indigenous issues, and ends with a critical thinking question. The materials go in depth into each Prime Minister and the issues in his time, including Indigenous history, international issues, and what life was like for people in this time. The second series is called 'Minister in a Minute' and sums up each Prime Minister in one minute. Retrospect aims to add more Canadian content to YouTube. Feedback welcome!!

With animation, interactivity, and sound effects, Starting with Soil demonstrates how plants and animals cooperate to make the soil we need to grow healthy food. Kids learn that soil starts with bare rock and discover how long it takes nature to make one inch of topsoil. (Spoiler alert: it takes 500 years!) Different chapters convey the importance of pollinators and the critical roles animals, the weather, microorganisms, and cover crops play in organic farming. Designed for students ages 7-9, Starting with Soil allows users to plant seeds, build a compost pile, drag a microscope over different organisms in soil to get a better look, and view the symbiosis at work when corn, beans, and squash are planted together.

The Violence is Preventable (VIP) program is a comprehensive strategy for connecting schools, educators, students and families with Children Who Witness Abuse (CWWA) programs across the province to improve the health and welfare of children and youth impacted by violence. As provincial coordinator of this school-based prevention program, the BC Society of Transition Houses (BCSTH) supports VIP sites to accomplish the following program goals: • Break the silence of domestic violence by making it safe for children and youth to speak up in schools about their experiences? • Increase teacher, school staff, parent/caregiver, and student awareness about violence in relationships and its effects on child witnesses? • Empower participants to become personally involved in community social justice initiatives; • Motivate students and educators to recognize violence in their everyday lives; and • Facilitate partnerships between schools and communities in order to respond to the emotional, social, academic, and psychological needs of children and youth exposed to domestic violence.
