- The Healthy Habits Challenge is a 30 day initiative where students can track 6 healthy habits on an online platform. Data is sent weekly to teachers. The Healthy Habits notes are: healthy eating, physical activity, screen time, water intake, sleep time, and mental health (journaling). Challenges are run three times per year and classes or whole schools can sign up. The entire challenge is turnkey and all resources are FREE. The challenges are supported by our team, our resources, and prizes can include athlete visits, gym banners for most active schools, and much more. The goal of the challenges are to instil healthy habits at the elementary school age and allow the students to learn about accountability and goal setting while providing data on progress.

- Step one: Have students look at a picture for clues to answer who, what, where, when, why and how questions about the battle depicted in the picture. Step two: Have students examine primary sources (9 sources available). Teacher may choose to have students look at all 9 or allow students to select 6 to look at. Students will try to piece together the causes and components of the incident depicted in the picture presented in step one. Step three: Offer students a secondary source on the battle of Seven Oaks in order that they gain an overview of the Battle of Seven Oaks. I recommend TC2's Snapshots of Nineteenth Century Canada for this. Step four: Present the Culminating Task where students can create a short story, a new broadcast or a skit depicting an interpretation of stories behind the Battle of Seven Oaks. There is an assessment rubric provided and a self/team evaluation sheet. Make this your own. It is a lot of fun. I have tried it!

Furthermore, it encourages students to promote a learning environment that is welcoming and accepting of everyone. After hearing some of the statistics around LGBTQ youth suicide and depression, students will learn about the “It Gets Better” project started by Dan Savage, an author and newspaper columnist from the USA. This project asks students to reflect on the harmful effects of homophobic bullying and invites them to promote a school environment that allows people to be themselves free of judgment and harassment. They develop an understanding of the importance of making plausible inferences about an image in order to gather information about a historical or contemporary situation or place. It includes instructional suggestions for teachers (learn about the strategy, practicing the strategy, independent student activities) and resources for students (data chart, rating scale, student guide, samples and self-assessment rubric). An additional 80 Tools for Thought lessons are available to either individual members of Partner schools, boards and/or districts.

- I followed a student outside and captured an ordinary moment. I reflected on what I saw. I talked to another teacher for their thoughts. I talked to the parent of the student for their thoughts. I connected his learning with the curriculum and thought about what I would do in the classroom to further his learning and the learning of others. A pedagogical narration is the process and framework I used to make learning visible.

- Link to Laura Candler's File Cabinet on Cooperative Learning: Cooperative learning is a powerful teaching strategy that's more than just a passing fad. Research has shown that when implemented properly, students in cooperative learning classrooms outperform their peers in traditional classrooms. The key is knowing how to implement the strategies to foster interaction while making sure all students are held accountable. Dr. Spencer Kagan developed the "structural" approach to cooperative learning, and I've found it to be extremely effective. I highly recommend his book Cooperative Learning which is available from Amazon.com.

- Improve the content of your students' essays by having them view a couple of documentary films and create a writing response. They will take ideas from the film of their choice, develop their own ideas in response to it, agree or disagree, and choose a composition type that will best suit their topic. Then they will write their essay and go through a peer editing process to revise it. Finally they will submit a good copy to you. A specific rubric for marking it is included as well.
