Description
Choose Your Voice offers four action-packed units that comprehensively explore prejudice, stereotypes and historical oppression. Students will learn from a variety of media, lessons, activities and discussions, with opportunities to brainstorm, share and compare, participate in class discussions and create graphic organizers. In original five-minute documentary videos, narratives of historical events are described first-hand by survivors. Written by teachers for teachers, the lessons are easy to use, thought-provoking and powerful. Minority groups such as Jews, Muslims, Sikhs and First Nations are represented in the resource to offer students a wide range of perspectives and well-rounded education on the topics presented. Students are encouraged to speak up against all injustices and not be bystanders. Teachers register for free (always).

Choose Your Voices aligns with the New BC Curriculum including its Core Competencies. It links to curriculum requirements for grades 6, 7 and 8 in every province and territory. It meets objectives for: Social Sciences, Language Arts (English/French), Physical Education (Health unit), Religion, The Arts – Drama, Music, Visual Art, and more. It is adaptable for second-language learners and LD students, exceptional students, grades 4 and 5 and secondary Applied level. It can be used for Safe Schools Programs, anti-bullying programs, Holocaust education, character education, human rights and social justice education.

Description
The Labour Movement in British Columbia 1840-1914 and 1914-2013 can be used as background material for the Working People: A History of Labour in BC vignettes series hosted on the Knowledge Network. The articles are designed to be used individually in the Social Studies 10 and Social Studies 11 course. Teachers can supplement the reading activity with selected lessons from the Working People: A History of Labour in BC lessons that will be posted here. Additionally, the video series The Edge of the World: B.C.'s Early Years has a number of segments that compliment the reading for the 1840-1914 time period.

Learning Standards
The materials address aspects of the key learning standards of the current social studies 10 and 11 curriculums. For Social Studies 10, critical thinking skills are applied throughout as well as research and writing skills as described in the “skills and processes of social studies”. Aspects of “Identity, Society and Culture” are addressed in the materials including gender roles, ethnicity and daily life as well the interactions of Aboriginal peoples in early Canada. Elements of the “Economy and Technology” learning outcomes are discussed in the examination of resource development and technological innovations. Additionally, aspects of the environmental impact and attitudes towards resource extraction are developed as they relate to the “Environment” learning outcome of the IRP. Regarding Social Studies 11, the areas of the “skills and processes of social studies” apply throughout as well as aspects of how Canadians can affect change at the federal and provincial levels of government. In the later examples of the reading the impact of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms are reflected in the work. The role of workers in both World War I and II and aspects of the “Autonomy and International Involvement” aspect of the IRP . The material can also be affectively applied to the “Society and Culture” of the curriculum addressing the development and impact of social policies and programs, the role of the labour movement in Canada and specifically the role of women in social, political and economic change in Canada.

This PowerPoint presents a history of the Tour de France from its inception, and the challenges that participants face during the entire race. Videos present information about Drafting, Cracking, and the dangers of this intense bicycle race which happens annually in July in France. Students will also see some of the best moments from last year's Tour de France and a 3D rendition of the race route for 2018. Students are presented with pre-viewing questions and will respond to them after the videos.

The Violence is Preventable (VIP) program is a comprehensive strategy for connecting schools, educators, students and families with Children Who Witness Abuse (CWWA) programs across the province to improve the health and welfare of children and youth impacted by violence. As provincial coordinator of this school-based prevention program, the BC Society of Transition Houses (BCSTH) supports VIP sites to accomplish the following program goals: • Break the silence of domestic violence by making it safe for children and youth to speak up in schools about their experiences? • Increase teacher, school staff, parent/caregiver, and student awareness about violence in relationships and its effects on child witnesses? • Empower participants to become personally involved in community social justice initiatives; • Motivate students and educators to recognize violence in their everyday lives; and • Facilitate partnerships between schools and communities in order to respond to the emotional, social, academic, and psychological needs of children and youth exposed to domestic violence.
