- Description
- Everyone has a unique story to share. Stories help us learn about ourselves, our families, and other people. Curiosity and wonder leads us to new discoveries about ourselves and the world around us. By reading “And Tango Makes Three”, we not only learn about penguins and the penguin life cycle, but about other family structures (i.e. same-sex families) and how same-sex couples can become parents. This lesson plan can be used cross-curricula with Socials, PHE, ELA, and may also be used in Science (i.e. if combined with a stronger focus on the penguin life cycle, habitat, etc.)

- Description

- Description
- This assignment creates awareness around homophobic bullying in secondary schools and the devastating consequences it has for some youth. Furthermore, it encourages students to promote a learning environment that is welcoming and accepting of everyone. After hearing some of the statistics around LGBTQ youth suicide and depression, students will learn about the “It Gets Better” project started by Dan Savage, an author and newspaper columnist from the USA. This project asks students to reflect on the harmful effects of homophobic bullying and invites them to promote a school environment that allows people to be themselves free of judgment and harassment. - This warm up activity reinforces the 3 ways to asking a question: Intonation, Est-ce que, Inversion. Students work in small teams to determine the solution to a enigmatic problem by asking the teacher only Yes/No questions. The more questions they ask the more points they earn. The teacher presents the enigmas one at a time in French. Students ask Comment dit-on ... Que veut-dire ... questions to verify their comprehension. Using images in the slides, synonyms, gestures or charades, the teacher explains the text. English is never required. Once understood, the teams ask yes/no questions to determine the solution. Each team scores points accordingly if they ask a properly phrased question: Intonation: 1 point, Est-ce que: 5 points, Inversion: 10 points. A poorly phrased question earns 0 points, nor does the teacher answer with oui/non. If a teams explains the solution, they earn 25 points. Points can be traded in for prizes/rewards. Students can earn individual points. Super FUN!

- Description
- The Every Teacher Project is a national study of Canadian educators’ perceptions and experiences of LGBTQ-inclusive education, designed to identify and make widely available the collective expertise of teachers and educational workers on inclusive education practices for sexual and gender minority students. The Every Teacher Project attracted tremendous support from project partner The Manitoba Teachers’ Society and from every national, provincial and territorial teacher organization in the publicly funded school systems of Canada. With their help in recruiting, researchers completed the project with 3,400 survey participants and an additional 24 focus groups, far exceeding our initial goals and making this the largest study of its kind in the world to date. - Description
- Fairy Tales are a wonderful genre to explore how gender has been portrayed historically and in current times. Traditional fairy tales and fractured ones (modern day ones with a twist) allow primary students to think critically about how men and women are portrayed and compare these portrayals to their own families and communities. This instructional sample allows students to explore relationship dynamics, and factors that influence self-identity, through a gender-based lens.

- This lesson plan has two parts. Part one uses a storybook to introduce and explore gender identity and gender pronouns (she/he/they). By incorporating books with gender-diverse characters in the classroom, students will appreciate the gender spectrum, fluidity, and the use of gender pronouns. Part one consists primarily of discussion and a role-play activity. Part two builds upon part one and includes activities and worksheets.

- Description
- Two notes in two days from the bears! Being gay is just another kind of love. The bears inform us about the legalization of gay marriage in Ireland. Here in Canada too, people of the same gender can marry each other. The bears place emphasis on a number of points. Not everyone supports gay marriage, although, it was a majority rule. We always need to respect all views. How can we be all we can be when we're not allowed to be true to ourselves? The bears say, as long as you're not hurting yourself or others, you should be able to be true to yourself. If you can't be true to yourself, maybe you're not allowed to be or maybe you're too afraid for to be, to remember, that gay marriage didn't just happen overnight. It took a lot of courage, for people to stand up for something they believe in. What do you believe in? Will you take a stand? Taking the first step is the hardest.

- Description
- The National Inventory of School District Interventions in Support of LGBTQ Student Wellbeing was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of school-system interventions in reducing stigma and improving resilience of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and Two-Spirit, and queer and questioning (LGBTQ) students. It was conducted as part of the larger research program led by Dr. Elizabeth Saewyc at SARAVYC, UBC. The goal of this study was to identify which interventions have been implemented across Canada through an online survey of school district Superintendents/Directors, and what benefits were associated with the various interventions. The survey covered a range of possible interventions in support of LGBTQ students: LGBTQ-inclusive policy, generic and LGBTQ-specific harassment procedures, course content, GSAs, generic and LGBTQ-themed events, professional development, and teaching resources.
