The vignette explores the issues and tensions behind the Vancouver Island Coal Strikes of 1912-14. The lesson materials focus on strategies used by the workers to gain better working conditions and wages by uniting labour into unions. The harsh methods of repressing the strike are also covered in the film. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. Description
The introductory unit sets the context for the course, with a particular emphasis on establishing awareness of First Peoples pedagogy and of the key features that make this course unique. Given the unique nature of this course, it is important for the teacher to establish a classroom environment that is welcoming and supportive. This unit includes a variety of activities for teachers to work with, including opportunities for community building, establishing the ground rules for respectful contribution and handling conflict, understanding and beginning to work with First Peoples’ pedagogical approaches, and much more. Much of the work of this unit involves students participating in small and large group discussion, as well personal response writing.

Description
The Métis have often been called The Forgotten People because they have been marginalized in history through exclusion from the governmental financial structures that feature in First Nations communities, and from broad treaty-land claims processes. Often there is a lot of confusion about who the Métis were and are. This introduction will give students and teachers a sense of Métis history and culture from the historic fur trading days to contemporary times as well as raise broader questions about nationhood and personal identity.

Description
This section examines humour in Ian Ross’s Joe from Winnipeg series that allows for a gentle and personal criticism of social conditions. Ross’s popular “Joe from Winnipet” commentaries were written for CBC radio and television, and have been collected and published in a book series. In his “Joe” series, Ross deals in a light-hearted but insightful way with such issues as moose on the road, little dogs wearing nail polish, Batman and bandaids, Christmas cake, letter glue, odometer checks, immunization, and springrolls. Joe represents Everyman, and this universal appeal is what has made the “Joe” series a success.

Description
This lesson plan looks at Japanese-Canadian internment during WW2 through a study of two children's books: 'Naomi’s Road' by Joy Kogawa, and 'A Place Where Sunflowers Grow' by Amy Lee-Tai. 'Naomi's Road' is a novel about a young girl that relates a tale of unquenchable human spirit, undaunted by prejudice and unable to let go of hope. 'A Place Where Sunflowers Grow' by Amy Lee-Tai looks at imprisonment through the eyes of a child, and offers beautiful, haunting depictions of life in a Japanese internment camp during World War 2.

Cultures around the world may vary, but one thing is common: wherever we find people, we also find cats and dogs. These education resources, lessons and worksheets aim to educate students about the characteristics of cats and dogs and their needs as domesticated animals. The lessons, student reading, video and activities provide more than just facts about cats and dogs. They help students understand the unique relationships these animals have shared with people for thousands of years. The lesson plans and activities also encourage your students to examine and discuss the important responsibilities people have in caring for cats and dogs and the many different ways that people live with these animals around the world, from country to country and culture to culture.

The documentary video Flood of Change shares the story of three youth in Nepal and their movement to take action around water, sanitation and hygiene issues. The story is told by Nepalese youth who filmed 70% of the final footage and found the words and images to share their story. In this video, we learn about a diarrhea outbreak that happened in the Western Region of Nepal in 2009. The outbreak affected over 5,000 individuals and caused more than 464 deaths in 18 districts. The majority of the deaths were people in the ethnic group known as Dalits or "untouchables" who are a low income group in Nepal and have poor access to sanitation facilities and little education on safe water, sanitation and hygiene. A group of youth from Kathmandu mobilized to visit the region and create awareness about the importance of safe water and sanitation in the affected area.

Description
"Secret Path" was written by Gord Downie and illustrated by Jeff Lemire and illustrates the hardship and history of residential schooling in Canada . This book was inspired by an Anishinaabe boy named Chanie Wenjack who ran away from his residential school in 1966 and died on the way to his home with the Marten Falls First Nation. The story is a graphic novel accompanied by a soundtrack written by Downie, and was released in October of 2016. The release of the book was followed by an hour long special on CBC that tells the story in animation with the soundtrack. All of the proceeds from the book, album, and performance will go to the National Center for Truth and Reconciliation. Here are some ideas for centers/stations that could compliment the use of Secret Path as a resource in text, soundtrack and film forms. The book has immense possibilities and because of its graphic novel form it could be adapted to suit the needs (and appropriateness) of a variety of grades and subjects.

Description
Folk musician Sixto Rodriguez (aka Rodriguez, Jesus Rodriguez, and Sugar Man) is the sixth son of Mexican immigrants who moved to the American midwest for work in the 1920s. Many of Rodriguez’s songs, including “Cause” (the last song he ever recorded before being dropped from his record label in December 1971), reflect the struggles of the marginalized inner-city poor who often used alcohol and other drugs to cope with harsh conditions. This lesson plan invites students to listen to two of his songs and reflect on some of the themes that are talked about in the songs, including the challenges of immigrating to a new country as well as the use of drugs and alcohol.

Description
Drugs figure prominently in S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, a novel about friendship and belonging in the early 1960s. Alcohol, tobacco and caffeinated drinks are mentioned dozens of times, sometimes playing a pivotal role in the plotline, other times offering insight into the daily lives and world views of various characters. Members of both the underprivileged Greasers and over-privileged Socs use drugs, though each character’s relationship with drugs is unique. Different substances are used—or not used—for different reasons and in different ways. The Outsiders is ideal for helping Grade 8 students develop drug literacy. The story exposes young readers to a wealth of factors related to why people use drugs, and helps them identify and explore some of the potential benefits and consequences of our drug-related choices.
