Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "Trouble on the Line” from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. The vignette explores the role of female telephone operators in British Columbia and their activism that contributed to the first strike in the Canadian Telephone industry. The supporting lesson materials focus on the role and challenges that women had in creating a voice and place for themselves in the early telephone industry as well as their role in shaping the early union movement in the province. This lesson involves using the "jigsaw" method of examining the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's "Call to Action" report. Students are in groups of four and each group receives a section of the Call to Action report (ie. 3 pages per group). Using the worksheet provided, students read, discuss and fill out highlights from the report. Next, the teacher brings the class together and each group shares their findings. In this way, some of the many highlights of the Call to Action report is covered. Finally, students can discuss a possible "action" in support of the report.

The BC advocate for children and youth released a biography of "Paige"--an aboriginal teen in foster care who died of an overdose in Vancouver's impoverished downtown eastside. This lesson plan looks at Japanese-Canadian internment during WW2 through a study of two children's books: 'Naomi’s Road' by Joy Kogawa, and 'A Place Where Sunflowers Grow' by Amy Lee-Tai. 'Naomi's Road' is a novel about a young girl that relates a tale of unquenchable human spirit, undaunted by prejudice and unable to let go of hope. 'A Place Where Sunflowers Grow' by Amy Lee-Tai looks at imprisonment through the eyes of a child, and offers beautiful, haunting depictions of life in a Japanese internment camp during World War 2.

Description
"Secret Path" was written by Gord Downie and illustrated by Jeff Lemire and illustrates the hardship and history of residential schooling in Canada . This book was inspired by an Anishinaabe boy named Chanie Wenjack who ran away from his residential school in 1966 and died on the way to his home with the Marten Falls First Nation. The story is a graphic novel accompanied by a soundtrack written by Downie, and was released in October of 2016. The release of the book was followed by an hour long special on CBC that tells the story in animation with the soundtrack. All of the proceeds from the book, album, and performance will go to the National Center for Truth and Reconciliation. Here are some ideas for centers/stations that could compliment the use of Secret Path as a resource in text, soundtrack and film forms. The book has immense possibilities and because of its graphic novel form it could be adapted to suit the needs (and appropriateness) of a variety of grades and subjects.

For this narration, we focused on a Grade One student who was observed during their play outdoors in the rich winter landscape near West Boundary Elementary School. Reflecting on other ‘ordinary moments’ outdoors with children, we have also included snapshots that capture what children do when they are outside. Donna Boucher teaches Grade 3 at Sardis Elementary in Chilliwack, BC and is an active member of EEPSA (secretary). Growing up as a farm kid and early career work as a wildlife biologist developed her appreciation and connection to nature. This guides her practice as she provides lots of opportunities for her students to explore and engage with their natural world. Janine Fraser teaches Kindergarten and Grade One at Midway Elementary School in Midway, BC. She grew up exploring the forests and creeks around her school in North Vancouver and values opportunities to get kids outside. Natasha Burgess teaches Kindergarten and Grade One at Marysville Elementary School in Marysville, BC. While working on her Masters of Education through UVic, she became very interested in ecoliteracy and learning outdoors with young children.

There are two parts to this activity. In the first part students will observe two photographs of classrooms, first one historical and then one present day. They will be guided through a class discussion where they will talk about what they notice , what they wonder, and look at similarities and differences between the two. The teacher will make a chart with their observations. The second part of the activity is to provide the students with pictures of historical school supplies and have them make inferences about what they are. They will then be shown books (provided by the teacher) of the school utensils being used so the students can draw conclusions, or they can use the provided pictures to have them draw their conclusions. An English language arts extension of this activity is provided in which the students would complete a word sort activity where they would cut out and match the word with the correct picture. The student would follow up with printing the word underneath.

Students learn to define a variety of art terms associated with the Renaissance and the Middle Ages and engage with the concept of visual symbolism. Students work towards writing a structured, descriptive paragraph outlining their own imagined symbolic Renaissance Portrait. By using writing planners and scaffolds, students write how they use symbolism to represent 5 of their personality traits in their Renaissance-inspired portrait. This lesson was originally designed for use in a Humanities 8 class (with scaffolding for ELL students). This guide is meant to support professional leaning among educators but may be useful to parents or other adults who interact with children. It is designed to be used in self-directed inquiry groups but can also be used for personal study. It is about the concept of resilience, and it helps build the capacity to nurture students’ (and others’) ability to adapt to adversity. The readings have been carefully selected to provide an accessible introduction to the material and stimulate the application of the ideas into practice. The suggested discussion questions and activities are designed to help you engage with the material. You are encouraged to pursue other questions that might present themselves or experiment with other activities. The important thing is to engage with the ideas through an intentional process of inquiry. The material is arranged as a 4-session inquiry, but you can adapt it to fit your own availability and needs.

The Every Teacher Project is a national study of Canadian educators’ perceptions and experiences of LGBTQ-inclusive education, designed to identify and make widely available the collective expertise of teachers and educational workers on inclusive education practices for sexual and gender minority students. The Every Teacher Project attracted tremendous support from project partner The Manitoba Teachers’ Society and from every national, provincial and territorial teacher organization in the publicly funded school systems of Canada. With their help in recruiting, researchers completed the project with 3,400 survey participants and an additional 24 focus groups, far exceeding our initial goals and making this the largest study of its kind in the world to date. The National Inventory of School District Interventions in Support of LGBTQ Student Wellbeing was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of school-system interventions in reducing stigma and improving resilience of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and Two-Spirit, and queer and questioning (LGBTQ) students. It was conducted as part of the larger research program led by Dr. Elizabeth Saewyc at SARAVYC, UBC. The goal of this study was to identify which interventions have been implemented across Canada through an online survey of school district Superintendents/Directors, and what benefits were associated with the various interventions. The survey covered a range of possible interventions in support of LGBTQ students: LGBTQ-inclusive policy, generic and LGBTQ-specific harassment procedures, course content, GSAs, generic and LGBTQ-themed events, professional development, and teaching resources. The past years have seen large numbers of refugees moving to Europe. This, and the rise of populist movements in Europe and North America, has led unions to develop activities engaging schools, local communities, authorities, etc. to promote the rights of migrants and build inclusive schools and communities. With the support of Education International (EI), exchange visits, information sharing and peer-learning activities allowed education unions to inspire each other and explore synergies across borders. This toolkit aims to build on these experiences and facilitate education unions to develop their work in this area. It also assists unions by exploring the issues around integrating migrants and refugees in education and sharing what others have been doing in this domain.

A lesson plan on propaganda maps geared towards 20th Century World History 12 (adaptable to Political Studies 12 or Social Studies 11). In the modern era, students are constantly surrounded by digital and non-digital forms of persuasion. This is not new: propaganda and persuasion have long been used to influence the perspectives of citizens. Maps are spatially malleable and subject to intentional distortion, for military, geopolitical, economic and/or other aims. These persuasion techniques emerge in modern media. Students are first exposed to a variety of persuasive maps, where they learn to identify and critically analyze the aims and audiences of these maps. Then students are divided into groups that act as public relations companies who have been contracted to make a map that persuades U.K. audiences to vote to either leave or remain in the E.U. This activity increases understanding of how persuasive tools are used and how citizens must be critical consumers of information.
