Description
This warm up activity reinforces the 3 ways to asking a question: Intonation, Est-ce que, Inversion. Students work in small teams to determine the solution to a enigmatic problem by asking the teacher only Yes/No questions. The more questions they ask the more points they earn. The teacher presents the enigmas one at a time in French. Students ask Comment dit-on ... Que veut-dire ... questions to verify their comprehension. Using images in the slides, synonyms, gestures or charades, the teacher explains the text. English is never required. Once understood, the teams ask yes/no questions to determine the solution. Each team scores points accordingly if they ask a properly phrased question: Intonation: 1 point, Est-ce que: 5 points, Inversion: 10 points. A poorly phrased question earns 0 points, nor does the teacher answer with oui/non. If a teams explains the solution, they earn 25 points. Points can be traded in for prizes/rewards. Students can earn individual points. Super FUN!

The year is 1841 and the Act of Union has just been signed. The last four or five years have been very chaotic in the Canadas and now that the rebellions, the Durham Report, and the Act of Union are in the past, it is time to look back and create a commemorative magazine about this important time in Canadian history.

Description
This presentation defines online curation and offers some choices for digitally curating. In today's world where the amount of online information can be overwhelming, digital curation can help teachers organize online resources. For that purpose, a few examples of good sites for curating will be offered. In addition, links to Japanese learning and teaching resources have been curated through a visual Symbaloo page and a list on Listly.

Description
The Echo Project is about exploring an aspect of 20th century Canadian history through a generational lens. This is done by making a personal connection to the past through interviews and scouring intimate primary documents such as family journals, letters, and photographs as well as what students find with broader research. Students think critically about sources and patterns, develop historical empathy, and get creative with how they represent the past. While many students choose topics related to the World War II era, they may discover they have ties to stories and events before or after the war such as the Great Depression of the 1930s or the Postwar era of the 1950s and 60s.

Description
The Canadian Letters and Images Project is an online archive of the Canadian war experience, from any war, as told through the letters and images of Canadians themselves. Begun in August 2000, the Project is located in the Department of History at Vancouver Island University. Through the digitization of contemporary letters, diaries, photographs, and other related materials, the Project permits Canadians to tell their story, and Canada’s story, through their own words and images. The Teacher's Guide contains 12 English Language Arts and Social Studies lessons that support curricular competencies associated with historical thinking.

Canadian Prime Ministers come to life! There are two series of videos being currently made by this YouTube Channel. The first is a long version of each PM (between 6-12 minutes each) which incorporates all different aspects of history, including indigenous issues, and ends with a critical thinking question. The materials go in depth into each Prime Minister and the issues in his time, including Indigenous history, international issues, and what life was like for people in this time. The second series is called 'Minister in a Minute' and sums up each Prime Minister in one minute. Retrospect aims to add more Canadian content to YouTube. Feedback welcome!!

Description

The PIR Live Event program engages classrooms across Canada in dynamic online webinars about a range of topics, introducing students to Canadian researchers, professionals, and facilities. Each PIR Live Event webinar features a Q&A with a different guest expert and/or a virtual tour of a research facility — and it’s FREE to participate! Classrooms across Canada can join the discussion by submitting their questions during the webinar and getting answers in real time from our guest expert. If you can’t participate at the scheduled time for a PIR Live Event, you can submit your questions in advance to liveevent@pirweb.org and watch the video recording afterward on the Partners In Research YouTube channel with your class to hear the answers! PIR Live Events are interactive, dynamic, and a great way to bring virtual experts and other classrooms into your classroom. “The Stormbringers WW1" and "Duty Valour Sacrifice WW2" are computer simulations that allow students to experience World War One and World War Two events through the eyes of a Canadian soldier. Students are faced with the same challenges actual Canadian soldiers faced, month by month, year by year. From initial training camps, through overseas training, and through then every Canadian battle and campaign in each war. Both simulation programs are completely free - no fees, no registration needed, no log in, just access it on line and go!

“The Stormbringers WW1" allows students to experience World War One events through the eyes of a Canadian soldier. It includes over 400 screens, 60 tests and challenges, authentic letters and diary entries and over 1000 actual WW1 images. As students progress through the simulation they are faced with the same challenges actual Canadian soldiers faced, month by month, year by year. From initial training camps, through overseas training, and through then every Canadian battle and campaign in the war. Students learn about the lives of individual servicemen, through authentic letters, memoirs and diary entries, as well as about the major Canadian and world events through the entire war. “Duty, Valour, Sacrifice WW2” goes one step further. It allows students to select which service they will enlist in – the Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Navy or Royal Canadian Air Force. As with “The Stormbringers”, students progress through the entire war from a Canadian perspective, from enlisting, training camps, to service overseas. The simulation includes over 800 screens, 160 tests and challenges, authentic letters and diary entries and over 2000 actual WW2 images. As students progress through the simulation they learn about the experiences of individual servicemen, as well as about the major Canadian and world events in the war. The programs have been meticulously researched over five years and are currently being field tested by Ontario High School students. Both simulation programs are completely free - no fees, no registration needed, no log in, just access it on line and go! It's my small gift to the men and women who gave so much for us in the war. I want their stories to live on and I want our students to understand and to appreciate what these men and women went through on our behalf.
