- Description
- The year is 1841 and the Act of Union has just been signed. The last four or five years have been very chaotic in the Canadas and now that the rebellions, the Durham Report, and the Act of Union are in the past, it is time to look back and create a commemorative magazine about this important time in Canadian history.

- Description
- This lesson is suitable for Social Studies classes studying the First World War and the Canadian Home Front as well as curriculum examining gender and racial tensions in the work force of early British Columbia. The time period of the lesson is set in the closing months of the war and the early recovery period from the Great War to early 1919. Additional overlapping intrigues to the women struggling for fair wages and better working conditions in the steam laundries of Vancouver was the death of Ginger Goodwin and the threats of a General Strike raised by the Vancouver Trades and Labour Council, as well as the onset of the Spanish Influenza Pandemic. The lesson materials also examine the racial conflict between the steam laundries and the Chinese hand laundries. Critical thinking and the use of primary sources are at the core of the lesson activities.

- Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "Age of Steamers” from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. In a province as vast as British Columbia, the focus in this film is the introduction of sternwheelers and steamships that allowed greater movement and mobility and how they impacted the development of the colony and province in the Gold Rush era and beyond. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. - Step one: Have students look at a picture for clues to answer who, what, where, when, why and how questions about the battle depicted in the picture. Step two: Have students examine primary sources (9 sources available). Teacher may choose to have students look at all 9 or allow students to select 6 to look at. Students will try to piece together the causes and components of the incident depicted in the picture presented in step one. Step three: Offer students a secondary source on the battle of Seven Oaks in order that they gain an overview of the Battle of Seven Oaks. I recommend TC2's Snapshots of Nineteenth Century Canada for this. Step four: Present the Culminating Task where students can create a short story, a new broadcast or a skit depicting an interpretation of stories behind the Battle of Seven Oaks. There is an assessment rubric provided and a self/team evaluation sheet. Make this your own. It is a lot of fun. I have tried it!

- Description
- As the new BC curriculum promotes a more inquiry-based approach to learning, the need to develop diverse digital literacies becomes even more crucial. But how can we keep up when new apps and programs keep popping up? In this PowerPoint used as part of his 2017 PSA Superconference keynote presentation, Ron Darvin talks about getting past an app-centred paradigm and to go back to what is at the core of digital literacy so that we can teach our students to be truly literate in the 21st century.

- Description
- Bullets, Blood and Stones: the journey of a child soldier, brings students face to face with the child soldier situation that occurred in Uganda when infamous warlord, Joseph Kony, abducted 60,000 children and forced them to join his Lord’s Resistance Army. Teachers who have used this book in their classrooms note that student interest is high as the story is fast paced and the characters are very relatable. Real life events in the book provide a perfect teaching opportunity to contrast the lives of children in other parts of the world and challenge the way in which students view themselves and their place in society. Although events in the story are horrifying, there are moments of warmth and humour that are uplifting and give hope to the human condition. Teaching resources, including chapter by chapter discussion questions, activities, and a power point presentation, are available on the resource page of White’s website.

- Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "By Women, For Women” from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. In the 1970s, more women entered into the workforce and sought ways to become organized. One union that formed in British Columbia—the Service, Office, and Retail Workers' Union of Canada—is the subject of this film. Students gain an appreciation of women’s issues in the workplace in the 1970s—and learn more about an attempt to organize a union in the banks by the independent union SORWUC--through a simulation of a union organizing drive. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. - The Canadian Letters and Images Project is an online archive of the Canadian war experience, from any war, as told through the letters and images of Canadians themselves. Begun in August 2000, the Project is located in the Department of History at Vancouver Island University. Through the digitization of contemporary letters, diaries, photographs, and other related materials, the Project permits Canadians to tell their story, and Canada’s story, through their own words and images. The Teacher's Guide contains 12 English Language Arts and Social Studies lessons that support curricular competencies associated with historical thinking.

- Description
- This activity will involve analyzing textual primary sources about Chinese immigration during the mid to late 1800s in Canada. The purpose of this activity is to give students practice in analyzing digital primary sources, to understand the context in which the sources were made, and to investigate the causes and consequences of opinions and actions on economic, political, social, and cultural historical practices. Incorporating sources from UBC Library’s Open Collections into your classroom can help students build their historical thinking through analyzing, contextualizing, and inferring using historical texts.
