- This lesson about orcas was designed for grades 4-8 but can be adapted for primary grades and covers many curricular competencies in Language Arts, Science, Social Studies and Art. The cognitive strategies suggested are engaging and motivating for learners with a variety of learning needs and can also be applied to most learning sequences across the curriculum. They also include practice with the core competencies. These will provide many entry points for learners to explore the life, environment and struggles of the orcas. Granny’s Clan is an engaging story about an orca family. Students will instantly connect too many similarities between their family and Granny’s.

Within the context of COVID-19, critical social distancing measures have distanced teachers and students from their physical school communities. - Cannabis use often happens in a social setting and can be a way to have fun with friends, but it can also affect relationships (both positively and negatively). Likewise, relationships with family and friends can influence the choices young people make regarding substance use. With the help of Cycles, a film about youth and cannabis use, this lesson plan aims to engage students to think critically about cannabis use and how it can impact different types of relationships. A facilitator’s guide that provides further lesson plans is available in both English and French.

The first discovery activity takes quite a bit of preparation but the second main activity takes very little time to prepare. The prices are authentic, the pictures are authentic and the activity is lifelike for sure. Also, more than just unit pricing the main and supplementary activities also look at responsible buying. Why do you choose product X over product Y? Are you only considering the unit price?

She was an advocate for trans rights and was known as the “bright light” among Vancouver’s LGBTQ community. This documentary feature film is a celebration of January’s life, among other trans women of colour. This film is about remembering the impact that January had on the lives of everyone she encountered. This film is about uplifting the narratives and lived experiences of trans women of colour. This film is about collectively liberating all marginalized and oppressed people.

- Class 1 A short video documentary, filmed at a Siwash Gathering in Tsilhqot'in territory (near Sugar Cane), introduces the game of Lahal. Learners will listen and watch to learn not only the rules of the game, but also the purpose both past and present. Learners will learn about the materials, the hand signals as well as the object and procedures of the game. Learners will be introduced the the value this game holds for the Tsihlqot'in community both past and present. Learners will then be asked to calculate theoretical probabilities of certain results in the game. Class 2 Learners will be introduced to experiential probability and will have an opportunity to conduct a math experiment in small groups. Follow up Learners will have a chance to reflect on their learning after watching a first nation's dance celebrating Laval. Finally, if the teacher wishes, the actual game of Lahal can be played! Worksheets, links to videos, music, etc. provided.

- Various studies have shown that having a pet can increase self-esteem, physical fitness, and social connectedness while decreasing loneliness and stress. This lesson uses this fact as a jumping off point to engage students in thinking about ways we might use to manage stress, the different impacts these strategies might have and how to make choices in using these tools to maximize our own well-being. As a facilitator of dialogue, you are not an observer but a participant in the conversation. So you should feel free to add in thoughts that may not be voiced by the students (but do so in a way that is conversational rather than authoritative). At the end of the day, we want students to recognize that some tools (like exercise and breathing) are more universal, both in terms of number of people for whom they are effective and the range of situations in which they help. But no tool is a magic bullet, and all tools must be used wisely.

- We live in a world of ‘mixed signals’ about how to stay healthy and enjoy life and the risks and rewards of substance use. It can be hard to decide which suggestions are right. Health related guidelines and recommendations have been developed by scientists and health researchers to help Canadians make decisions that promote health. But these guidelines often fail to acknowledge their own limitations or to place their recommendations within the context of broader social and political factors. This lesson introduces some of these guidelines and recommendations that can provide a springboard for critically reviewing particular behaviours (eating, physical activity, substance use) and exploring how such guidelines might be useful in making decisions about health and well-being. Rather than trying to “sell” students on a specific behaviour or belief, the learning activities should help students build the skills to explore and seek to understand and manage their own health.

- The Furious Fractions game is an attempt to make learners increase their fluency with fractions while also incorporating Aboriginal content into the learning process. Students will be grouped together and assigned a Tsimshian village that they must protect from an impending attack from a Haida war canoe. To protect their village they must create whole numbers from a loose collection of varying fractions in an assigned bag. Once they have made a whole number they will be rewarded a piece of fortification. Their village will only be safe once it has been entirely fortified and this must be achieved before the Haida war canoe arrives. The war canoe is moving towards the villages at a set rate and so the students' time is limited. The game is exciting and can be developed for varying math levels. The addition of sound effects such as drumming and other printed materials can act to further engage learners.

Student's can be divided into small groups, and then assigned one section of the worksheet to research and then present to the rest of the class. Or it can be assigned as homework and then discussed the following day.

It is designed to be shared in small “bite-size” portions that offer time for student reflection and application of the ideas presented. The information is organized to align the structure of the re-designed curriculum (which follows the Scientific Method) with the viewing process suggested by the video. This video introduces the basic concepts of kinesiology and how heart rate is affected by movement and exercise.

- Description
- The lesson will begin with a class discussion on reflections and symmetry and then look at the Canadian flag as a representation of symmetry and investigate the image. Students will learn through a series of questioning and visual representations. Next the students will be engaged when looking at several images of symmetrical and non-symmetrical images. Students will have to decide if the images are symmetrical by using a mirror to see reflections. Students will work together and justify their answers within their groups before coming back to a large group to discuss it further. Students will have an opportunity to create their own symmetrical shape with one or more lines of symmetry using geo-board dot paper provided by the teacher. Lastly, students will have the chance to do a gallery walk to see each other’s creation. There are many modifications, adaptions, follow up activities and integrations provided to be sure for a successful lesson depending on students' needs.
