- Description
- Species at Risk Workshops are fun, hands-on, and solutions-oriented conservation workshops that focus on four species at risk in the Salish Sea: Southern Resident Killer Whales, Steller Sea Lions, Basking Sharks, and Leatherback Sea Turtles. These are a series of three inquiry-based workshops, that can be delivered virtually (the educator live streams to a class) or in-person for Grades 4-12. Students brainstorm and implement impactful stewardship projects to engage their schools and communities in aquatic species conservation. Workshops are designed to encourage critical thinking, personal awareness, and social responsibility. For virtual delivery, students are engaged through interactive tools such as Kahoot.

- Students are empowered to make changes in their everyday lives to help reduce human-caused threats to species at risk and our oceans. Through their Youth Action Team projects, they are able to see how their actions have real-world impacts. Students learn to be aware of the personal choices they make in their daily lives, and how they can contribute to their communities and make the world a better place. This is all taught through the lens of ocean conservation, with a focus on four species at risk that live in the Salish Sea. Students learn how their actions can impact these animals. Creative/Critical Thinking - I can learn a lot about something new, consider different perspectives, generate and develop new ideas, and implement them in real life (students brainstorm and participate in group discussions about solutions to threats to species at risk) Communication - I can share and develop ideas with others, take on roles and responsibilities with a group, summarize key ideas and present what I have learned (achieved through Youth Action Team projects and presentations in Workshop 3) Personal & Social Responsibility - I can explain what my values are and how they affect the choices that I make, I can participate in classroom and group activities to improve the wellbeing of myself, my community, and the natural world (achieved through Youth Action Team projects that are implemented in the community to benefit the natural world)

- The BCTF is a strong supporter and partner of SOGI 1 2 3, a provincial program that helps educators make schools inclusive and safe for students of all sexual orientations and gender identities (SOGI). Within the context of COVID-19, critical social distancing measures have distanced teachers and students from their physical school communities. We asked Scout Gray, SOGI 1 2 3 Program Lead for BC and Alberta, to share what impact the pandemic is having on youth who identify as LGBTQ2S+, and what teachers can do to support them.

- Cannabis use often happens in a social setting and can be a way to have fun with friends, but it can also affect relationships (both positively and negatively). Likewise, relationships with family and friends can influence the choices young people make regarding substance use. With the help of Cycles, a film about youth and cannabis use, this lesson plan aims to engage students to think critically about cannabis use and how it can impact different types of relationships. A facilitator’s guide that provides further lesson plans is available in both English and French.

- This submission by Susie Grace, Ramona De Graaf, and Stephanie Watkins, includes an authentic hook (presented in the powerpoint) for the need to learn unit pricing. There are 3 activities. The first discovery activity takes quite a bit of preparation but the second main activity takes very little time to prepare. The prices are authentic, the pictures are authentic and the activity is lifelike for sure. Also, more than just unit pricing the main and supplementary activities also look at responsible buying. Why do you choose product X over product Y? Are you only considering the unit price?

- Description
- Various studies have shown that having a pet can increase self-esteem, physical fitness, and social connectedness while decreasing loneliness and stress. This lesson uses this fact as a jumping off point to engage students in thinking about ways we might use to manage stress, the different impacts these strategies might have and how to make choices in using these tools to maximize our own well-being. As a facilitator of dialogue, you are not an observer but a participant in the conversation. So you should feel free to add in thoughts that may not be voiced by the students (but do so in a way that is conversational rather than authoritative). At the end of the day, we want students to recognize that some tools (like exercise and breathing) are more universal, both in terms of number of people for whom they are effective and the range of situations in which they help. But no tool is a magic bullet, and all tools must be used wisely.

- Description
- We live in a world of ‘mixed signals’ about how to stay healthy and enjoy life and the risks and rewards of substance use. It can be hard to decide which suggestions are right. Health related guidelines and recommendations have been developed by scientists and health researchers to help Canadians make decisions that promote health. But these guidelines often fail to acknowledge their own limitations or to place their recommendations within the context of broader social and political factors. This lesson introduces some of these guidelines and recommendations that can provide a springboard for critically reviewing particular behaviours (eating, physical activity, substance use) and exploring how such guidelines might be useful in making decisions about health and well-being. Rather than trying to “sell” students on a specific behaviour or belief, the learning activities should help students build the skills to explore and seek to understand and manage their own health.

- This resource is a tool kit of short PDF files that can be used in a variety of ways to improve a group’s ability to understand each other, resolve differences and make good decisions. It was developed to support a seminar series conducted by the Centre for the Study of Educational Leadership and Policy (CSELP) at SFU. The tool kit could be useful for staff meetings, school-based team meetings or union executive meetings for example. It can also help individuals to deepen their understanding of the complexities of communication and improve their ability to be constructive participants in any type of discussion - whether as part of a group or more generally in their interpersonal relations.

- Description
- The Furious Fractions game is an attempt to make learners increase their fluency with fractions while also incorporating Aboriginal content into the learning process. Students will be grouped together and assigned a Tsimshian village that they must protect from an impending attack from a Haida war canoe. To protect their village they must create whole numbers from a loose collection of varying fractions in an assigned bag. Once they have made a whole number they will be rewarded a piece of fortification. Their village will only be safe once it has been entirely fortified and this must be achieved before the Haida war canoe arrives. The war canoe is moving towards the villages at a set rate and so the students' time is limited. The game is exciting and can be developed for varying math levels. The addition of sound effects such as drumming and other printed materials can act to further engage learners.

- Description
- In this activity, students investigate the fascinating and complex process of decomposition and lay the foundation for deeper understanding of concepts related to matter and energy transfer in ecosystems. Through exploration and discussion, students go beyond simple definitions. Instead, students discover key characteristics of decomposition as they struggle with creating a sequence for decomposing wood and leaves. They learn the difference between physical decomposition and chemical decomposition and that many things contribute to decomposition, but certain organisms are classified as decomposers. They also search for and discuss evidence of decomposers, make model diagrams to further develop their ideas about the process of decomposition, and discuss decomposition and its role in the cycling of matter. Finally, students are challenged to recognize the evidence and impact of decomposition in the ecosystems they explore.

- Description
- During the activity, students pick up a natural object, such as a leaf, and make “I notice…” statements out loud with a partner, then share some of their observations with the group. They do the same with “I wonder…” questions, and with “It reminds me of…” connections. Then, students practice using these tools while exploring whatever they find interesting. This simple routine can help students get beyond seeing nature as a “green blur,” and lead them to never be bored in nature again.

- Description
- Students take a census of an outdoor site, and look for organisms that perform different “jobs” in the biotic community. A biotic (or natural) community is made up of the various organisms that live and interact with one another in a particular environment. As in a human community, its members have different roles and depend on each other for survival. In this activity, students examine a study area to find out what organisms live there and the ecological jobs or niches they fill.
