Description
Everyone has a unique story to share. Stories help us learn about ourselves, our families, and other people. Curiosity and wonder leads us to new discoveries about ourselves and the world around us. By reading “And Tango Makes Three”, we not only learn about penguins and the penguin life cycle, but about other family structures (i.e. same-sex families) and how same-sex couples can become parents. This lesson plan can be used cross-curricula with Socials, PHE, ELA, and may also be used in Science (i.e. if combined with a stronger focus on the penguin life cycle, habitat, etc.)

Description
Animals are vulnerable beings in that they are subjected to situations beyond their control. Using animals as a bridge to discuss social justice issues can be a way to ease students into more sensitive and personal social justice issues such as racism and stereotyping. Included in this package are some outlined activities and discussion questions that should get the conversation started. These are designed to encourage students to think critically about where their beliefs and ideas come from and help them in their future discussions about issues involving people in society, as well as give them a chance to reflect on their own views on animals.

Description
This text is illustrated with updated graphs, photos and cites the work of hundreds of scientists and organizations such as the IPCC, NASA, Environment Canada, Royal Society of Canada, and Natural Resources Canada, to name a few. My resource is an update on the science of climate change, extreme weather, protecting nature and biodiversity, advancing renewable energy, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions with frequent reference to Canada and in particular British Columbia. Global impacts, mitigation and adaptation are explained throughout the text. My ten years of research cites reputable journals, national and international organizations and the media. Research covers climate change from the Arctic to the Antarctic, projection of climate change, how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, El Nino/La Nina, extreme weather, renewables, the oil sands and transport of bitumen, and Canada's contribution at the UN COP meetings. This book is meant as a resource for our youths to make wise decisions about their future. **Revised edition uploaded September 2019.

Description
This Climate Justice in BC resource package was designed to provide teachers with classroom-ready materials to engage their students with how climate action intersects with social justice. The curriculum features eight modules designed for students in Grades 8 to 12 that explore climate justice within the context of BC’s communities history, economy and ecology. These lessons tie into subject matter and prescribed learning outcomes (PLOs) already in BC’s curriculum, while providing a framework with which to unpack modern social and environmental issues, such as our industrial food system, consumerism and waste, transportation, and the development of a green economy.

Description
Dancing Backwards Society's free, downloadable school program, www.dancingbackwards.ca, celebrates Canada's women in political leadership and Indigenous women in governance. This online course for teachers of grades 5-8 focuses on engaged citizenship, gender equality, and the need for gender parity in decision making. The program provides teachers with multi-media lesson plans and activities that culminate in a final project in which students discover and document the story of one political woman in leadership or governance in Canada. Their 3-minute storytellings are then added to the website’s ever-expanding Her Story Archive, cementing women’s political contributions into history. Dancing Backwards satisfies various curriculum criteria for BC and all other provinces in Social Studies, English, Arts Education, and History (https://www.dancingbackwards.ca/the-program/learning-standards-outcomes-by-province

Description
*This lesson requires the use of an app. Teachers are reminded that they should check their school and district social media policies before implementing this in their classroom.* The digital world can be a positive community for kids and adults to express themselves and their creativity, but it also can have many pitfalls for kids to navigate on their own. At Mazu our users are learning to embrace the positive power of social media in a safe, curated space free of negativity, but we don’t want to stop there! We believe digital citizenship needs to be discussed and taught at an early age, so we invite your class to join our movement. You can help us to facilitate discussions on what it means to be a good digital citizen, and how we all have a part to play in making the online world a positive place. We’ve provided a sample lesson plan for you and some supplementary materials, feel free to use them to spark discussion and to add your own ideas. Become a part of our movement, discuss, create, and inspire what it means to be a good digital citizen!

Description
Divergent, by Veronica Roth, is the first of a trilogy, a series of young-adult dystopian novels set in a post-apocalyptic world. It explores themes related to individual and social identity as well as the use of science, and drugs in particular, as a means of social control. Citizens are divided into five factions based on their dispositions: Abnegation, for the selfless; Amity, for the peaceful; Candor, for the honest; Dauntless, for the brave; and Erudite, for the intellectual. Erudite scientists have designed a number of serums to be used in different ways for different populations for different reasons. At age 16, people must decide whether to stay with their family’s faction or join the faction best matching their personal aptitude. But then there are the Divergents. The prose is fast-paced but also provides a rich foundation for exploring many themes of interest to teens, including aspects of drug use and drug control.

Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "Fishermen’s Strike of 1900" from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. The vignette explores the tensions between the Cannery owners and the newly formed B.C. Fishermen’s Union the late 19th-early 20th century. The supporting lesson materials focus on the role and challenges of Frank Rogers efforts to organize and protect the rights of fishermen in the face of cannery owners opposition. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. The material offers an introduction to refugee and displacement issues for students in grade 6 and up. The educational resources are the result of a collaborative effort between the graduate school class (summer 2008) of Dr. Jan Stewart, Director of the Institute for War-Affected Children at Global College, University of Winnipeg and Médecins Sans Frontières/ Doctors Without Borders (MSF). The materials were developed based upon an earlier MSF educational publication: “A Refugee Camp in the City, On Assignment” Teachers Guide, MSF Canada (2003). We hope these five lesson plans will encourage students to continue to learn and understand the challenges more than 50 million refugees and internally displaced people face worldwide

Description
In 2002, two American fighter pilots, Major Harry Schmidt and Major William Umbach, killed four Canadian soldiers near Kandahar, Afghanistan, because the pilots mistakenly thought the Canadian soldiers were shooting at them. Their court defense attributed the pilots’ actions to the Air Force-issued stimulant drugs they were taking at the time. The pilots had been taking the stimulant Dexedrine during the flight, under the standard-order guidelines of their commander. Today, when pilots are finished with their missions, they are provided with Ambien or Restoril, the “no-pills,” to bring them down and help them sleep and adjust after defying the body’s circadian rhythms and altering neurotransmitter levels with amphetamines. The lawyer for Major Schmidt noted that the depressant sleep aid Ambien, which was given to Schmidt to help him sleep before the mission, also affected his mental state when he bombed the Canadians.

Description
A Getting to Know You Session is intended to provide clarity about both the differences and the similarities between the “focus child” and the other students. Using a powerpoint presentation and class dialogue, photos of the child help to correct assumptions, provide accurate information and begin to remove hesitations about getting to know their classmate. To be successful, it requires an adult facilitator who is able to model non-judgmental, curious and accepting behaviours and who has a relationship with the parents or caregivers of the focus child.

This "green reads" book and media list was compiled over several years as part of a BCTF Inquiry Project with TELA and EEPSA members. The final inquiry question was: As an elementary teacher, how can I use selected children's literature and media as a springboard for experiencing and connecting to nature in our school and community environments?

The rationale for creating these lesson plans is to give teachers and their students an opportunity to examine the conditions surrounding grizzly bears in British Columbia. It also looks at the arguments against trophy hunting.
