Gratitude is linked with many physical, social and emotional benefits and is an important skill to foster with children and youth. When choosing an action to do so, however, research indicates that if the activity is forced or feels like homework it isn’t a good match. The outcome isn’t authentic and the results fall short of the potential benefits that experiencing gratitude offers. The most effective gratitude activities are ones that engage children’s interests and strengths.

Everyone has a unique story to share. Stories help us learn about ourselves, our families, and other people. Curiosity and wonder leads us to new discoveries about ourselves and the world around us. By reading “And Tango Makes Three”, we not only learn about penguins and the penguin life cycle, but about other family structures (i.e. same-sex families) and how same-sex couples can become parents. This lesson plan can be used cross-curricula with Socials, PHE, ELA, and may also be used in Science (i.e. if combined with a stronger focus on the penguin life cycle, habitat, etc.)

Step one: Have students look at a picture for clues to answer who, what, where, when, why and how questions about the battle depicted in the picture. Step two: Have students examine primary sources (9 sources available). Teacher may choose to have students look at all 9 or allow students to select 6 to look at. Students will try to piece together the causes and components of the incident depicted in the picture presented in step one. Step three: Offer students a secondary source on the battle of Seven Oaks in order that they gain an overview of the Battle of Seven Oaks. I recommend TC2's Snapshots of Nineteenth Century Canada for this. Step four: Present the Culminating Task where students can create a short story, a new broadcast or a skit depicting an interpretation of stories behind the Battle of Seven Oaks. There is an assessment rubric provided and a self/team evaluation sheet. Make this your own. It is a lot of fun. I have tried it!

The Canadian Letters and Images Project is an online archive of the Canadian war experience, from any war, as told through the letters and images of Canadians themselves. Begun in August 2000, the Project is located in the Department of History at Vancouver Island University. Through the digitization of contemporary letters, diaries, photographs, and other related materials, the Project permits Canadians to tell their story, and Canada’s story, through their own words and images. The Teacher's Guide contains 12 English Language Arts and Social Studies lessons that support curricular competencies associated with historical thinking.

This lesson uses Deborah Ellis’s short story “Through the Woods” as a catalyst for conversation around questions that are useful in examining the impact of cannabis use and regulation on individuals and relationships. “Through the Woods” is about a day in the life of Matthew, a 14-year-old boy who buys cannabis at school to take to his ailing grandmother who raised him until she became too sick to care for him. The story is ripe with easy-to-see themes that young people are sure to question naturally and/or identify with (e.g., stereotypes about cannabis dealers, users and non-users; risks and rewards of selling/buying/using cannabis; and reasons for using). As such, the story can be used to help students develop their skills in asking good questions as they interact with a story and its characters in more complex ways. This lesson aims to deepen students’ understanding of relationships between peers, family members and others as well as the complex nature of human drug use.

These documents take a bit of time to introduce, but quickly become a staple for the English classroom. Based on research and various resources, I have put together a strategy to get students thinking and connecting with what they read. The guide helps to get students started with the concept of close reading, and the dialogue journal is to be used for longer works and/or works that cannot be written on. I recommend taking time to teach the subject-specific vocabulary and doing a guided practice of annotating. For the annotations, you can give a minimum number for the annotations themselves and/or the number of categories. To prepare for an essay, I have also directed students to have a certain number of annotations that can be used as evidence in their writing.

This resource is a tool kit of short PDF files that can be used in a variety of ways to improve a group’s ability to understand each other, resolve differences and make good decisions. It was developed to support a seminar series conducted by the Centre for the Study of Educational Leadership and Policy (CSELP) at SFU. The tool kit could be useful for staff meetings, school-based team meetings or union executive meetings for example.  It can also help individuals to deepen their understanding of the complexities of communication and improve their ability to be constructive participants in any type of discussion - whether as part of a group or more generally in their interpersonal relations.

This unit is designed to be highly adaptable to the needs of the teacher and their class. The activities can be applied to any short story. You can read multiple short stories in a row and wrap up the unit with the "Book Talks" lesson, or you can read a single short story and move on to other subjects. The projects should take students a full week to complete and they should be able to do them mostly independently. This model works well for asynchronous distance learning. However, the activities will easily transfer into the face-to-face classroom.

Dancing Backwards Society's free, downloadable school program, www.dancingbackwards.ca, celebrates Canada's women in political leadership and Indigenous women in governance. This online course for teachers of grades 5-8 focuses on engaged citizenship, gender equality, and the need for gender parity in decision making. The program provides teachers with multi-media lesson plans and activities that culminate in a final project in which students discover and document the story of one political woman in leadership or governance in Canada. Their 3-minute storytellings are then added to the website’s ever-expanding Her Story Archive, cementing women’s political contributions into history. Students should have some cursory knowledge of World War II prior to doing this activity. The students begin by reading the “Dieppe Raid” essay created by Veterans Canada. The students then watch the video (link provided in the instructions) where veterans of the raid speak about their experiences. The students then complete the questions. You may choose to split this activity in half. You may also choose to covert and combine all files into a single PDF. I am providing a single-point rubric, but this can be easily modified to meet your needs. Please feel free to modify the activity as you see fit. The lesson is meant to evoke students to empathize with the soldiers, and to consider the cost of battles, as well as their signficance.
