- Step one: Have students look at a picture for clues to answer who, what, where, when, why and how questions about the battle depicted in the picture. Step two: Have students examine primary sources (9 sources available). Teacher may choose to have students look at all 9 or allow students to select 6 to look at. Students will try to piece together the causes and components of the incident depicted in the picture presented in step one. Step three: Offer students a secondary source on the battle of Seven Oaks in order that they gain an overview of the Battle of Seven Oaks. I recommend TC2's Snapshots of Nineteenth Century Canada for this. Step four: Present the Culminating Task where students can create a short story, a new broadcast or a skit depicting an interpretation of stories behind the Battle of Seven Oaks. There is an assessment rubric provided and a self/team evaluation sheet. Make this your own. It is a lot of fun. I have tried it!

- This lesson is the introduction to a unit on Ancient Civilizations and introducing Ancient Rome. This lesson fits in with the Historical Thinking Project’s Big 6, specifically the concepts Establish Historical Significance as well as Historical Perspectives. Historical significance depends on any given student’s perspective on history. To have a historical perspective as a modern student can be challenging with this generation immersed in technology. Some historical landmarks included, but not limited to are the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Baths of Caracalla, Saint Peters Basilica, the Temple of Saturn the Roman Forum, the Vatican, Circus Maximus, Piazza Navona, Castel Sant’Angelo and St John in the Lateran. As Grade 7 curricular content, this exercise is focused on Ancient civilizations up until 7th Century, so it would be ideal to choose landmarks within this time period, but up to the discretion of the teacher.

- A lesson plan on propaganda maps geared towards 20th Century World History 12 (adaptable to Political Studies 12 or Social Studies 11). In the modern era, students are constantly surrounded by digital and non-digital forms of persuasion. This is not new: propaganda and persuasion have long been used to influence the perspectives of citizens. Maps are spatially malleable and subject to intentional distortion, for military, geopolitical, economic and/or other aims. These persuasion techniques emerge in modern media. Students are first exposed to a variety of persuasive maps, where they learn to identify and critically analyze the aims and audiences of these maps. Then students are divided into groups that act as public relations companies who have been contracted to make a map that persuades U.K. audiences to vote to either leave or remain in the E.U. This activity increases understanding of how persuasive tools are used and how citizens must be critical consumers of information.

The lesson examines the life Buck Suzuki who championed the rights of Japanese Canadian Fishermen and who was also an early advocate for the environmental protection of Salmon resources and habitat. The vignette is set within the context of the Internment of the Japanese Canadians during the Second World War. Designed by curriculum experts, this program utilizes a wide variety of media (short documentary style films and compelling visuals) to present information on a history of human suffering, stemming from social injustice that is still a growing problem today. While meeting curriculum requirements, you can help students become better people, and make your classroom a better place for learning. - Choose Your Voice offers four action-packed units that comprehensively explore prejudice, stereotypes and historical oppression. Students will learn from a variety of media, lessons, activities and discussions, with opportunities to brainstorm, share and compare, participate in class discussions and create graphic organizers. In original five-minute documentary videos, narratives of historical events are described first-hand by survivors. Written by teachers for teachers, the lessons are easy to use, thought-provoking and powerful. Minority groups such as Jews, Muslims, Sikhs and First Nations are represented in the resource to offer students a wide range of perspectives and well-rounded education on the topics presented. Students are encouraged to speak up against all injustices and not be bystanders. Teachers register for free (always).

In the 1970s, more women entered into the workforce and sought ways to become organized. One union that formed in British Columbia—the Service, Office, and Retail Workers' Union of Canada—is the subject of this film. Students gain an appreciation of women’s issues in the workplace in the 1970s—and learn more about an attempt to organize a union in the banks by the independent union SORWUC--through a simulation of a union organizing drive. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. - In this activity, students investigate the fascinating and complex process of decomposition and lay the foundation for deeper understanding of concepts related to matter and energy transfer in ecosystems. Through exploration and discussion, students go beyond simple definitions. Instead, students discover key characteristics of decomposition as they struggle with creating a sequence for decomposing wood and leaves. They learn the difference between physical decomposition and chemical decomposition and that many things contribute to decomposition, but certain organisms are classified as decomposers. They also search for and discuss evidence of decomposers, make model diagrams to further develop their ideas about the process of decomposition, and discuss decomposition and its role in the cycling of matter. Finally, students are challenged to recognize the evidence and impact of decomposition in the ecosystems they explore.

- During the activity, students pick up a natural object, such as a leaf, and make “I notice…” statements out loud with a partner, then share some of their observations with the group. They do the same with “I wonder…” questions, and with “It reminds me of…” connections. Then, students practice using these tools while exploring whatever they find interesting. This simple routine can help students get beyond seeing nature as a “green blur,” and lead them to never be bored in nature again.

A biotic (or natural) community is made up of the various organisms that live and interact with one another in a particular environment. As in a human community, its members have different roles and depend on each other for survival. In this activity, students examine a study area to find out what organisms live there and the ecological jobs or niches they fill.

- With animation, interactivity, and sound effects, Starting with Soil demonstrates how plants and animals cooperate to make the soil we need to grow healthy food. Kids learn that soil starts with bare rock and discover how long it takes nature to make one inch of topsoil. (Spoiler alert: it takes 500 years!) Different chapters convey the importance of pollinators and the critical roles animals, the weather, microorganisms, and cover crops play in organic farming. Designed for students ages 7-9, Starting with Soil allows users to plant seeds, build a compost pile, drag a microscope over different organisms in soil to get a better look, and view the symbiosis at work when corn, beans, and squash are planted together.

- Bullets, Blood and Stones: the journey of a child soldier, brings students face to face with the child soldier situation that occurred in Uganda when infamous warlord, Joseph Kony, abducted 60,000 children and forced them to join his Lord’s Resistance Army. Teachers who have used this book in their classrooms note that student interest is high as the story is fast paced and the characters are very relatable. Real life events in the book provide a perfect teaching opportunity to contrast the lives of children in other parts of the world and challenge the way in which students view themselves and their place in society. Although events in the story are horrifying, there are moments of warmth and humour that are uplifting and give hope to the human condition. Teaching resources, including chapter by chapter discussion questions, activities, and a power point presentation, are available on the resource page of White’s website.
