Description
A grade 5 level, 7-8 lesson Earth Science unit package focused on the rock cycle and how materials from the earth are used as resources to build homes, roads and other things in our communities. Includes a section on the importance of reclaiming land after mines are closed, and exercises for students to do inside (some requiring parent or teacher supervision) and outside the classroom (suitable for online education). This package was produced by the BC Stone Sand & Gravel Association (a registered non-profit) with thanks to a generous donation from Summit Materials that allowed us to build the package with assistance from the Ontario Stone Sand & Gravel Association. Many thanks also to the volunteer members who spent many hours reviewing and revising the materials to ensure they are ideally suited for use here in BC.

Description
This lesson is suitable for Social Studies classes studying the First World War and the Canadian Home Front as well as curriculum examining gender and racial tensions in the work force of early British Columbia. The time period of the lesson is set in the closing months of the war and the early recovery period from the Great War to early 1919. Additional overlapping intrigues to the women struggling for fair wages and better working conditions in the steam laundries of Vancouver was the death of Ginger Goodwin and the threats of a General Strike raised by the Vancouver Trades and Labour Council, as well as the onset of the Spanish Influenza Pandemic. The lesson materials also examine the racial conflict between the steam laundries and the Chinese hand laundries. Critical thinking and the use of primary sources are at the core of the lesson activities.

The COVID-19 pandemic has unfortunately shone a spotlight on the multiple forms of racism that were prevalent in Canada long before the onset of the pandemic. If you are a teacher who identifies as Aboriginal, First Nations, Metis, Inuit, Indigenous, Black or a Person of Colour (IBPOC), your union has multiple support available to you to address both the individual and structural impacts of racism.

The BCTF is a strong supporter and partner of SOGI 1 2 3, a provincial program that helps educators make schools inclusive and safe for students of all sexual orientations and gender identities (SOGI). Within the context of COVID-19, critical social distancing measures have distanced teachers and students from their physical school communities. We asked Scout Gray, SOGI 1 2 3 Program Lead for BC and Alberta, to share what impact the pandemic is having on youth who identify as LGBTQ2S+, and what teachers can do to support them.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and avoiding an increase of 2 degrees Celsius by 2100 is our goal. By continuing to increase fossil fuel consumption and not advancing renewable energy our civilization would be a risk. Tipping points and cascading events become more likely.

Description
This activity hopes to bring to life some of the many immigration stories that contribute to Canada's past, present and future. With research, art and some level of performing arts, this activity is designed to be interdisciplinary and engaging for students to understand perspective, and how the change and continuity of Canadian immigration patterns have helped shape our nation. In addition to various assessments that will accompany this activity, students will be given a reflection sheet after the presentations. This will allow them to voice any strengths or stretches they encountered during the activity, and provide their teacher with any mitigating factors that they think should be taken into account during assessment.

Description
The past years have seen large numbers of refugees moving to Europe. This, and the rise of populist movements in Europe and North America, has led unions to develop activities engaging schools, local communities, authorities, etc. to promote the rights of migrants and build inclusive schools and communities. With the support of Education International (EI), exchange visits, information sharing and peer-learning activities allowed education unions to inspire each other and explore synergies across borders. This toolkit aims to build on these experiences and facilitate education unions to develop their work in this area. It also assists unions by exploring the issues around integrating migrants and refugees in education and sharing what others have been doing in this domain.

Description
Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "By Women, For Women” from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. In the 1970s, more women entered into the workforce and sought ways to become organized. One union that formed in British Columbia—the Service, Office, and Retail Workers' Union of Canada—is the subject of this film. Students gain an appreciation of women’s issues in the workplace in the 1970s—and learn more about an attempt to organize a union in the banks by the independent union SORWUC--through a simulation of a union organizing drive. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. Description
In this activity, students investigate the fascinating and complex process of decomposition and lay the foundation for deeper understanding of concepts related to matter and energy transfer in ecosystems. Through exploration and discussion, students go beyond simple definitions. Instead, students discover key characteristics of decomposition as they struggle with creating a sequence for decomposing wood and leaves. They learn the difference between physical decomposition and chemical decomposition and that many things contribute to decomposition, but certain organisms are classified as decomposers. They also search for and discuss evidence of decomposers, make model diagrams to further develop their ideas about the process of decomposition, and discuss decomposition and its role in the cycling of matter. Finally, students are challenged to recognize the evidence and impact of decomposition in the ecosystems they explore.

Description
During the activity, students pick up a natural object, such as a leaf, and make “I notice…” statements out loud with a partner, then share some of their observations with the group. They do the same with “I wonder…” questions, and with “It reminds me of…” connections. Then, students practice using these tools while exploring whatever they find interesting. This simple routine can help students get beyond seeing nature as a “green blur,” and lead them to never be bored in nature again.

Description
Students take a census of an outdoor site, and look for organisms that perform different “jobs” in the biotic community. A biotic (or natural) community is made up of the various organisms that live and interact with one another in a particular environment. As in a human community, its members have different roles and depend on each other for survival. In this activity, students examine a study area to find out what organisms live there and the ecological jobs or niches they fill.

Description
With animation, interactivity, and sound effects, Starting with Soil demonstrates how plants and animals cooperate to make the soil we need to grow healthy food. Kids learn that soil starts with bare rock and discover how long it takes nature to make one inch of topsoil. (Spoiler alert: it takes 500 years!) Different chapters convey the importance of pollinators and the critical roles animals, the weather, microorganisms, and cover crops play in organic farming. Designed for students ages 7-9, Starting with Soil allows users to plant seeds, build a compost pile, drag a microscope over different organisms in soil to get a better look, and view the symbiosis at work when corn, beans, and squash are planted together.

The Digitized Okanagan History project provides online access to historical materials from BC's Southern Interior. We digitize photographs, documents, maps, newspapers, and other records held by local museums and archives. These are excellent materials for teaching about local history, the Okanagan region, primary sources, and other creative topics. Students can find images of the Okanagan from over 100 years ago to inspire their curiosity and complement their work.

It includes instructional suggestions for teachers (learn about the strategy, practicing the strategy, independent student activities) and resources for students (data chart, rating scale, student guide, samples and self-assessment rubric). An additional 80 Tools for Thought lessons are available to either individual members of Partner schools, boards and/or districts.

Description
As the new BC curriculum promotes a more inquiry-based approach to learning, the need to develop diverse digital literacies becomes even more crucial. But how can we keep up when new apps and programs keep popping up? In this PowerPoint used as part of his 2017 PSA Superconference keynote presentation, Ron Darvin talks about getting past an app-centred paradigm and to go back to what is at the core of digital literacy so that we can teach our students to be truly literate in the 21st century.
