Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "Age of Steamers” from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. In a province as vast as British Columbia, the focus in this film is the introduction of sternwheelers and steamships that allowed greater movement and mobility and how they impacted the development of the colony and province in the Gold Rush era and beyond. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. Dancing Backwards Society's free, downloadable school program, www.dancingbackwards.ca, celebrates Canada's women in political leadership and Indigenous women in governance. This online course for teachers of grades 5-8 focuses on engaged citizenship, gender equality, and the need for gender parity in decision making. The program provides teachers with multi-media lesson plans and activities that culminate in a final project in which students discover and document the story of one political woman in leadership or governance in Canada. Their 3-minute storytellings are then added to the website’s ever-expanding Her Story Archive, cementing women’s political contributions into history. In this 'Tools for Thought' lesson developed by The Critical Thinking Consortium (www.tc2.ca) students use visual clues to explain images. They develop an understanding of the importance of making plausible inferences about an image in order to gather information about a historical or contemporary situation or place. It includes instructional suggestions for teachers (learn about the strategy, practicing the strategy, independent student activities) and resources for students (data chart, rating scale, student guide, samples and self-assessment rubric). An additional 80 Tools for Thought lessons are available to either individual members of Partner schools, boards and/or districts.

The Vancouver Canucks ®, in collaboration with the NHL® and the NHLPA, are excited to announce a new education initiative called Future Goals. The Future Goals program makes two digital learning resources available to your district at no cost. Future Goals - Hockey Scholar is for students in grades 5-7, exploring real-life applications of STEM concepts such as area/volume of an ice rink, conservation of energy of a falling puck, and speed/velocity using skates. This will be available Summer 2015 (in both English and French). The other resource is our digital citizenship resource. It's available now and also no cost to your school. This is a web-based course for students in grades 5-8, covering topics such as cyberbullying, online safety and conducting online research.

Ce livret vise à améliorer les connaissances qu'ont les élèves concernant l'histoire, les cultures et les traditions des Inuits et, plus particulièrement, des personnes qui vivent dans la collectivité inuite de Salluit dans le Nord du Canada. Grâce aux leçons de ce livret, les élèves seront en mesure : - d'exprimer une appréciation des solides traditions et de la culture unique des Inuits, de diverses façons - de décrire les divers changements qui ont touché l'Arctique canadien depuis ses débuts jusqu'à aujourd'hui - de trouver l'emplacement de la collectivité de Salluit et de ses municipalités inuites voisines sur une carte du Canada - d'exprimer les similarités et différences entre la vie à Salluit et la vie dans leur propre collectivité.

Description
Afin de souligner le centenaire des premiers succès des femmes en relation avec le droit de vote au Canada, Historica Canada (le plus grand organisme du pays dédié à l’accroissement de la sensibilisation de l’histoire et de la citoyenneté canadiennes) a créé ce guide pédagogique. Les activités incluses dans ce guide ont été développées en ligne avec les concepts du Projet de la pensée historique du Dr Peter Seixas; elles complètent les curriculums canadiens des niveaux de l’intermédiaire et du secondaire. Le guide invite les élèves à approfondir leur compréhension de l’égalité entre les sexes et de la démocratie, grâce à la recherche et l’analyse, à des sujets de discussion intéressants et à des activités de groupe. Il demande aux élèves d’examiner les questions d’identité, d’équité, d’activisme et de justice sociale dans des contextes historiques et contemporains.
