Description
The COVID-19 pandemic has unfortunately shone a spotlight on the multiple forms of racism that were prevalent in Canada long before the onset of the pandemic. If you are a teacher who identifies as Aboriginal, First Nations, Metis, Inuit, Indigenous, Black or a Person of Colour (IBPOC), your union has multiple support available to you to address both the individual and structural impacts of racism.

Description
Most people don’t realize that British Columbia has the richest biodiversity of any province or territory in Canada. Biodiversity can be measured in many ways, but the simplest way to measure it is by species richness—the number of species present. Within our species-rich territory, there are many species at risk, and in most cases, human activity is responsible for the decline of wildlife populations.

The BCTF is a strong supporter and partner of SOGI 1 2 3, a provincial program that helps educators make schools inclusive and safe for students of all sexual orientations and gender identities (SOGI). Within the context of COVID-19, critical social distancing measures have distanced teachers and students from their physical school communities. We asked Scout Gray, SOGI 1 2 3 Program Lead for BC and Alberta, to share what impact the pandemic is having on youth who identify as LGBTQ2S+, and what teachers can do to support them.

Inspired by the refugee experiences of several students from Byrne Creek Secondary School in Burnaby, this zine tells the story of a fictional Yazidi family who flee from war-torn Iraq to Canada. Students will learn about the many barriers most refugees face before finally settling as permanent residents in their country of asylum. Teachers can print multiple copies of the zine or students can read it on a SMART Board or tablet. The lesson plans help students to delve deeper into the refugee experience.
