This lesson introduces students to cuisines from different cultures to show differences and similarities between cultures through food. Students will learn how to express their preferences using the "I like/I do not like" pattern. This lesson mainly focuses on oral and written skills.

This lesson is a simple, cross-cultural-contact simulation. Through experiencing and debriefing the potential that cross-cultural contact has for conflict and misunderstanding, students develop their perspective consciousness and recognize the need for tolerance, acceptance, communication, and compromise when interacting with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. This lesson likens titles and headings and titles to roadsigns (they tell you where you are going and what is next) and has an accompanying worksheet for students to complete to show their understanding of how a text is organized under headings, and how to use them to make predictions or find specific information.

Description
This lesson is intended to encourage discussions on World Food Day (October 16). It includes short lesson ideas through which you can begin these discussions at any grade level. Beyond these initial ideas, some extension ideas are included that invite further discussions of food growth, access to healthy foods, food insecurity, nutrition, and poverty. Teachers can use these as a springboard and adapt them for their own use.
