Description
Animals are vulnerable beings in that they are subjected to situations beyond their control. Using animals as a bridge to discuss social justice issues can be a way to ease students into more sensitive and personal social justice issues such as racism and stereotyping. Included in this package are some outlined activities and discussion questions that should get the conversation started. These are designed to encourage students to think critically about where their beliefs and ideas come from and help them in their future discussions about issues involving people in society, as well as give them a chance to reflect on their own views on animals.

Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "Farmworkers” from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. The vignette examines the British Columbian farmworkers whose work largely fell outside the protections of B.C. labour legislation and the efforts the Canadian Farmworkers’ Union to organize farmworkers and to provide them with the protections afforded to other labourers in the province . This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. For decades, people have debated the question: Is there a Scientific Basis for Race? The answer is…still under discussion. Many argue that race is socially constructed and that we are all part of the same human race. At the same time, scientists continue to research health issues, like sickle-cell anemia or diabetes, that impact some racial communities more than others. Why? Your assignment is to explore a topic in which Scientists have explored or had to address the idea of race! This could be with regards to medicine, sports, public health, scientific testing, genetics, and more.

Description
This lesson involves using the "jigsaw" method of examining the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's "Call to Action" report. Students are in groups of four and each group receives a section of the Call to Action report (ie. 3 pages per group). Using the worksheet provided, students read, discuss and fill out highlights from the report. Next, the teacher brings the class together and each group shares their findings. In this way, some of the many highlights of the Call to Action report is covered. Finally, students can discuss a possible "action" in support of the report.
