- Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "Age of Steamers” from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. In a province as vast as British Columbia, the focus in this film is the introduction of sternwheelers and steamships that allowed greater movement and mobility and how they impacted the development of the colony and province in the Gold Rush era and beyond. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. - Everyone has a unique story to share. Stories help us learn about ourselves, our families, and other people. Curiosity and wonder leads us to new discoveries about ourselves and the world around us. By reading “And Tango Makes Three”, we not only learn about penguins and the penguin life cycle, but about other family structures (i.e. same-sex families) and how same-sex couples can become parents. This lesson plan can be used cross-curricula with Socials, PHE, ELA, and may also be used in Science (i.e. if combined with a stronger focus on the penguin life cycle, habitat, etc.)

- This Climate Justice in BC resource package was designed to provide teachers with classroom-ready materials to engage their students with how climate action intersects with social justice. The curriculum features eight modules designed for students in Grades 8 to 12 that explore climate justice within the context of BC’s communities history, economy and ecology.These lessons tie into subject matter and prescribed learning outcomes (PLOs) already in BC’s curriculum, while providing a framework with which to unpack modern social and environmental issues, such as our industrial food system, consumerism and waste, transportation, and the development of a green economy.

It’s intended to give students Grades 8 to 12 the opportunity to learn about species at risk in British Columbia in their local environment, understand the threats and identify what they can do to help. Module 1 is an introduction to species at risk while Module 2 specifically focuses on amphibians. Each module uses a project-based learning approach where students will be introduced to the topic, then develop field investigative skills and participate in citizen science. Our resource contains links to valuable multimedia resources as well as ideas to help students connect with species at risk in their community.

- Dancing Backwards Society's free, downloadable school program, www.dancingbackwards.ca, celebrates Canada's women in political leadership and Indigenous women in governance. This online course for teachers of grades 5-8 focuses on engaged citizenship, gender equality, and the need for gender parity in decision making. The program provides teachers with multi-media lesson plans and activities that culminate in a final project in which students discover and document the story of one political woman in leadership or governance in Canada. Their 3-minute storytellings are then added to the website’s ever-expanding Her Story Archive, cementing women’s political contributions into history. - Divergent, by Veronica Roth, is the first of a trilogy, a series of young-adult dystopian novels set in a post-apocalyptic world. It explores themes related to individual and social identity as well as the use of science, and drugs in particular, as a means of social control. Citizens are divided into five factions based on their dispositions: Abnegation, for the selfless; Amity, for the peaceful; Candor, for the honest; Dauntless, for the brave; and Erudite, for the intellectual. Erudite scientists have designed a number of serums to be used in different ways for different populations for different reasons. At age 16, people must decide whether to stay with their family’s faction or join the faction best matching their personal aptitude. But then there are the Divergents. The prose is fast-paced but also provides a rich foundation for exploring many themes of interest to teens, including aspects of drug use and drug control.

The vignette explores the tensions between the Cannery owners and the newly formed B.C. Fishermen’s Union the late 19th-early 20th century. The supporting lesson materials focus on the role and challenges of Frank Rogers efforts to organize and protect the rights of fishermen in the face of cannery owners opposition. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. Critical thinking skills are applied throughout as well as research and writing skills as described in the “skills and processes of social studies”. Elements of the “Economy and Technology” learning outcomes are discussed in the examination of resource development and technological innovations. Additionally, aspects of the environmental impact and attitudes towards resource extraction are developed as they relate to the “Environment” learning outcome of the IRP.

The educational resources are the result of a collaborative effort between the graduate school class (summer 2008) of Dr. Jan Stewart, Director of the Institute for War-Affected Children at Global College, University of Winnipeg and Médecins Sans Frontières/ Doctors Without Borders (MSF). The materials were developed based upon an earlier MSF educational publication: “A Refugee Camp in the City, On Assignment” Teachers Guide, MSF Canada (2003). We hope these five lesson plans will encourage students to continue to learn and understand the challenges more than 50 million refugees and internally displaced people face worldwide

- In 2002, two American fighter pilots, Major Harry Schmidt and Major William Umbach, killed four Canadian soldiers near Kandahar, Afghanistan, because the pilots mistakenly thought the Canadian soldiers were shooting at them. Their court defense attributed the pilots’ actions to the Air Force-issued stimulant drugs they were taking at the time. The pilots had been taking the stimulant Dexedrine during the flight, under the standard-order guidelines of their commander. Today, when pilots are finished with their missions, they are provided with Ambien or Restoril, the “no-pills,” to bring them down and help them sleep and adjust after defying the body’s circadian rhythms and altering neurotransmitter levels with amphetamines. The lawyer for Major Schmidt noted that the depressant sleep aid Ambien, which was given to Schmidt to help him sleep before the mission, also affected his mental state when he bombed the Canadians.

- The Labour Movement in British Columbia 1840-1914 and 1914-2013 can be used as background material for the Working People: A History of Labour in BC vignettes series hosted on the Knowledge Network. The articles are designed to be used individually in the Social Studies 10 and Social Studies 11 course. Teachers can supplement the reading activity with selected lessons from the Working People: A History of Labour in BC lessons that will be posted here. Additionally, the video series The Edge of the World: B.C.'s Early Years has a number of segments that compliment the reading for the 1840-1914 time period.

- The materials address aspects of the key learning standards of the current social studies 10 and 11 curriculums. For Social Studies 10, critical thinking skills are applied throughout as well as research and writing skills as described in the “skills and processes of social studies”. Aspects of “Identity, Society and Culture” are addressed in the materials including gender roles, ethnicity and daily life as well the interactions of Aboriginal peoples in early Canada. Elements of the “Economy and Technology” learning outcomes are discussed in the examination of resource development and technological innovations. Additionally, aspects of the environmental impact and attitudes towards resource extraction are developed as they relate to the “Environment” learning outcome of the IRP. Regarding Social Studies 11, the areas of the “skills and processes of social studies” apply throughout as well as aspects of how Canadians can affect change at the federal and provincial levels of government. In the later examples of the reading the impact of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms are reflected in the work. The role of workers in both World War I and II and aspects of the “Autonomy and International Involvement” aspect of the IRP . The material can also be affectively applied to the “Society and Culture” of the curriculum addressing the development and impact of social policies and programs, the role of the labour movement in Canada and specifically the role of women in social, political and economic change in Canada.

- Link to Laura Candler's File Cabinet on Cooperative Learning: Cooperative learning is a powerful teaching strategy that's more than just a passing fad. Research has shown that when implemented properly, students in cooperative learning classrooms outperform their peers in traditional classrooms. The key is knowing how to implement the strategies to foster interaction while making sure all students are held accountable. Dr. Spencer Kagan developed the "structural" approach to cooperative learning, and I've found it to be extremely effective. I highly recommend his book Cooperative Learning which is available from Amazon.com.
