- This lesson is suitable for Social Studies classes studying the First World War and the Canadian Home Front as well as curriculum examining gender and racial tensions in the work force of early British Columbia. The time period of the lesson is set in the closing months of the war and the early recovery period from the Great War to early 1919. Additional overlapping intrigues to the women struggling for fair wages and better working conditions in the steam laundries of Vancouver was the death of Ginger Goodwin and the threats of a General Strike raised by the Vancouver Trades and Labour Council, as well as the onset of the Spanish Influenza Pandemic. The lesson materials also examine the racial conflict between the steam laundries and the Chinese hand laundries. Critical thinking and the use of primary sources are at the core of the lesson activities.

Following the reading of The Breadwinner, students will review selected articles from The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and demonstrate that they understand the concepts of human rights and of human rights violations through identifying and exploring human rights violations as portrayed within the novel. Students will be introduced to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Curiosity and wonder leads us to new discoveries about ourselves and the world around us. By reading “And Tango Makes Three”, we not only learn about penguins and the penguin life cycle, but about other family structures (i.e. same-sex families) and how same-sex couples can become parents. This lesson plan can be used cross-curricula with Socials, PHE, ELA, and may also be used in Science (i.e. if combined with a stronger focus on the penguin life cycle, habitat, etc.)

Using animals as a bridge to discuss social justice issues can be a way to ease students into more sensitive and personal social justice issues such as racism and stereotyping. Included in this package are some outlined activities and discussion questions that should get the conversation started. - Species at Risk Workshops are fun, hands-on, and solutions-oriented conservation workshops that focus on four species at risk in the Salish Sea: Southern Resident Killer Whales, Steller Sea Lions, Basking Sharks, and Leatherback Sea Turtles. These are a series of three inquiry-based workshops, that can be delivered virtually (the educator live streams to a class) or in-person for Grades 4-12. Students brainstorm and implement impactful stewardship projects to engage their schools and communities in aquatic species conservation. Workshops are designed to encourage critical thinking, personal awareness, and social responsibility. For virtual delivery, students are engaged through interactive tools such as Kahoot.

Through their Youth Action Team projects, they are able to see how their actions have real-world impacts. Students learn to be aware of the personal choices they make in their daily lives, and how they can contribute to their communities and make the world a better place. This is all taught through the lens of ocean conservation, with a focus on four species at risk that live in the Salish Sea. Students learn how their actions can impact these animals. Creative/Critical Thinking - I can learn a lot about something new, consider different perspectives, generate and develop new ideas, and implement them in real life (students brainstorm and participate in group discussions about solutions to threats to species at risk) Communication - I can share and develop ideas with others, take on roles and responsibilities with a group, summarize key ideas and present what I have learned (achieved through Youth Action Team projects and presentations in Workshop 3) Personal & Social Responsibility - I can explain what my values are and how they affect the choices that I make, I can participate in classroom and group activities to improve the wellbeing of myself, my community, and the natural world (achieved through Youth Action Team projects that are implemented in the community to benefit the natural world)

- Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "Buck Suzuki” from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. The lesson examines the life Buck Suzuki who championed the rights of Japanese Canadian Fishermen and who was also an early advocate for the environmental protection of Salmon resources and habitat. The vignette is set within the context of the Internment of the Japanese Canadians during the Second World War. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. - Bullets, Blood and Stones: the journey of a child soldier, brings students face to face with the child soldier situation that occurred in Uganda when infamous warlord, Joseph Kony, abducted 60,000 children and forced them to join his Lord’s Resistance Army. Teachers who have used this book in their classrooms note that student interest is high as the story is fast paced and the characters are very relatable. Real life events in the book provide a perfect teaching opportunity to contrast the lives of children in other parts of the world and challenge the way in which students view themselves and their place in society. Although events in the story are horrifying, there are moments of warmth and humour that are uplifting and give hope to the human condition. Teaching resources, including chapter by chapter discussion questions, activities, and a power point presentation, are available on the resource page of White’s website.
