Description
Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "Bows and Arrows” from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. The vignette explores the role of Aboriginal workers in the early years of the Port of Vancouver and the struggle for racial equality in the labour movement. The life of Bill Nahanee and the early years of the IWW (Industrial Workers of the World) are also featured in this lesson. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. The materials address aspects of the key learning standards of the current social studies 10 curriculum. Critical thinking skills are applied throughout as well as research and writing skills as described in the “skills and processes of social studies”. Aspects of “Identity, Society and Culture” are addressed in the materials including ethnicity and daily life as well the interactions of Aboriginal peoples in early Canada.

This supplementary document highlights the key elements and steps taken in the 2015 Core French Curriculum redesign process. The presentation is complete with Presenter's notes, which will help highlight many aspects of the new curriculum, including similarities and differences between the 2011 and 2015 Core French curricula.

Description
"Secret Path" was written by Gord Downie and illustrated by Jeff Lemire and illustrates the hardship and history of residential schooling in Canada . This book was inspired by an Anishinaabe boy named Chanie Wenjack who ran away from his residential school in 1966 and died on the way to his home with the Marten Falls First Nation. The story is a graphic novel accompanied by a soundtrack written by Downie, and was released in October of 2016. The release of the book was followed by an hour long special on CBC that tells the story in animation with the soundtrack. All of the proceeds from the book, album, and performance will go to the National Center for Truth and Reconciliation. Here are some ideas for centers/stations that could compliment the use of Secret Path as a resource in text, soundtrack and film forms. The book has immense possibilities and because of its graphic novel form it could be adapted to suit the needs (and appropriateness) of a variety of grades and subjects.
