- Our Ancestors and Our Dogs is part of a program about dogs and First Nations. It is about how the First Peoples of North America have lived with dogs for a long time. You will meet Elders and others who share their stories about dogs and about caring for dogs. All of these people love and respect dogs and so they have shared their ideas about dogs with you. All are First Nations (Swampy Cree, Anishinaabe). We are proud to have them share about our peoples and our good ways with dogs. This unit is focused on learning about the ancestors of dogs and how our ancestors lived well with dogs. It explains how dogs have always been part of the life of First Nations People and how our relationship with dogs is changing. It tells how our feelings for dogs are important. It tells us how to care for our dogs so that we can live with them safely and respectfully.

- This lesson involves using the "jigsaw" method of examining the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's "Call to Action" report. Students are in groups of four and each group receives a section of the Call to Action report (ie. 3 pages per group). Using the worksheet provided, students read, discuss and fill out highlights from the report. Next, the teacher brings the class together and each group shares their findings. In this way, some of the many highlights of the Call to Action report is covered. Finally, students can discuss a possible "action" in support of the report.

The 10 chapters of the DVD explores the events and issues that shaped the labour movement in British Columbia throughout the 20th century. For Social Studies 11 the development and impact of Canadian social policies and programs related to immigration, the welfare state, and minority rights are explored. Elements of the “Economy and Technology” learning outcomes are discussed in the examination of resource development and technological innovations. Relationships to the economic cycles with reference to the Great Depression and the labour movement in Canada are covered as well as descriptions of the roles of women in terms of social, political, and economic change in Canada For Social Studies 11 aspects of the Politics and Government learning outcomes are covered in explain how Canadians can effect change at the federal and provincial levels as well as the impact of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms on Canadian Society. Additionally, aspects of the environmental impact and attitudes towards resource extraction are developed as they relate to the “Environment” learning outcome of the social Studies 10 IRP.

- The Labour Movement in British Columbia 1840-1914 and 1914-2013 can be used as background material for the Working People: A History of Labour in BC vignettes series hosted on the Knowledge Network. The articles are designed to be used individually in the Social Studies 10 and Social Studies 11 course. Teachers can supplement the reading activity with selected lessons from the Working People: A History of Labour in BC lessons that will be posted here. Additionally, the video series The Edge of the World: B.C.'s Early Years has a number of segments that compliment the reading for the 1840-1914 time period.

- Learning Standards
- The materials address aspects of the key learning standards of the current social studies 10 and 11 curriculums. For Social Studies 10, critical thinking skills are applied throughout as well as research and writing skills as described in the “skills and processes of social studies”. Aspects of “Identity, Society and Culture” are addressed in the materials including gender roles, ethnicity and daily life as well the interactions of Aboriginal peoples in early Canada. Elements of the “Economy and Technology” learning outcomes are discussed in the examination of resource development and technological innovations. Additionally, aspects of the environmental impact and attitudes towards resource extraction are developed as they relate to the “Environment” learning outcome of the IRP. Regarding Social Studies 11, the areas of the “skills and processes of social studies” apply throughout as well as aspects of how Canadians can affect change at the federal and provincial levels of government. In the later examples of the reading the impact of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms are reflected in the work. The role of workers in both World War I and II and aspects of the “Autonomy and International Involvement” aspect of the IRP . The material can also be affectively applied to the “Society and Culture” of the curriculum addressing the development and impact of social policies and programs, the role of the labour movement in Canada and specifically the role of women in social, political and economic change in Canada.

- The vignettes in the series explore the historical perspectives on key labor issues of the late 19th and 20th century in British Columbia. Multiple perspectives of gender, ethnicity and social class are explored in the series as they relate to the labor history of British Columbia. Episodes are 2-3 minutes in length and are suitable for introduction and enrichment of the historical events and time periods. The content is appropriate for secondary classes but may also be used with intermediate grades as well.
