Description
This lesson is the introduction to a unit on Ancient Civilizations and introducing Ancient Rome. This lesson fits in with the Historical Thinking Project’s Big 6, specifically the concepts Establish Historical Significance as well as Historical Perspectives. Historical significance depends on any given student’s perspective on history. To have a historical perspective as a modern student can be challenging with this generation immersed in technology. Some historical landmarks included, but not limited to are the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Baths of Caracalla, Saint Peters Basilica, the Temple of Saturn the Roman Forum, the Vatican, Circus Maximus, Piazza Navona, Castel Sant’Angelo and St John in the Lateran. As Grade 7 curricular content, this exercise is focused on Ancient civilizations up until 7th Century, so it would be ideal to choose landmarks within this time period, but up to the discretion of the teacher.

Description
A lesson plan on propaganda maps geared towards 20th Century World History 12 (adaptable to Political Studies 12 or Social Studies 11). In the modern era, students are constantly surrounded by digital and non-digital forms of persuasion. This is not new: propaganda and persuasion have long been used to influence the perspectives of citizens. Maps are spatially malleable and subject to intentional distortion, for military, geopolitical, economic and/or other aims. These persuasion techniques emerge in modern media. Students are first exposed to a variety of persuasive maps, where they learn to identify and critically analyze the aims and audiences of these maps. Then students are divided into groups that act as public relations companies who have been contracted to make a map that persuades U.K. audiences to vote to either leave or remain in the E.U. This activity increases understanding of how persuasive tools are used and how citizens must be critical consumers of information.

Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "By Women, For Women” from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. In the 1970s, more women entered into the workforce and sought ways to become organized. One union that formed in British Columbia—the Service, Office, and Retail Workers' Union of Canada—is the subject of this film. Students gain an appreciation of women’s issues in the workplace in the 1970s—and learn more about an attempt to organize a union in the banks by the independent union SORWUC--through a simulation of a union organizing drive. Description
In this activity, students investigate the fascinating and complex process of decomposition and lay the foundation for deeper understanding of concepts related to matter and energy transfer in ecosystems. Through exploration and discussion, students go beyond simple definitions. Instead, students discover key characteristics of decomposition as they struggle with creating a sequence for decomposing wood and leaves. They learn the difference between physical decomposition and chemical decomposition and that many things contribute to decomposition, but certain organisms are classified as decomposers. They also search for and discuss evidence of decomposers, make model diagrams to further develop their ideas about the process of decomposition, and discuss decomposition and its role in the cycling of matter. Finally, students are challenged to recognize the evidence and impact of decomposition in the ecosystems they explore.

Description
Students take a census of an outdoor site, and look for organisms that perform different “jobs” in the biotic community. A biotic (or natural) community is made up of the various organisms that live and interact with one another in a particular environment. As in a human community, its members have different roles and depend on each other for survival. In this activity, students examine a study area to find out what organisms live there and the ecological jobs or niches they fill.

Description
With animation, interactivity, and sound effects, Starting with Soil demonstrates how plants and animals cooperate to make the soil we need to grow healthy food. Kids learn that soil starts with bare rock and discover how long it takes nature to make one inch of topsoil. (Spoiler alert: it takes 500 years!) Different chapters convey the importance of pollinators and the critical roles animals, the weather, microorganisms, and cover crops play in organic farming. Designed for students ages 7-9, Starting with Soil allows users to plant seeds, build a compost pile, drag a microscope over different organisms in soil to get a better look, and view the symbiosis at work when corn, beans, and squash are planted together.

Description
Understanding Food and Climate Change: A Systems Perspective explores the links between food systems and our changing climate with an emphasis on systems thinking. A systems approach helps to illuminate how seemingly disconnected phenomena are often dynamically linked and can be understood best when viewed in a larger context. This collection of essays contains an extensive bibliography that provides resources for further investigation. Available as a free iBook for Mac and iPad users.

Matter cycles. Matter for growth, maintenance and reproduction in all organisms cycles through the ecosystem and Earth processes. All life needs certain matter in order to stay alive. This includes nitrogen, phosphorus, and water; oxygen for many but not all animals; and carbon dioxide for plants, to name a few kinds of matter.

This website holds a collection of lab activities for Chemistry 11 that are either guided inquiry (I provide the question, students figure out the procedure) or that build skills to support inquiry (ex: brainstorming procedures together, finding patterns in data, using claim/evidence/reasoning to make conclusions based on evidence). It should be expanded over the next year to include Chemistry 12 resources.

The Digitized Okanagan History project provides online access to historical materials from BC's Southern Interior. We digitize photographs, documents, maps, newspapers, and other records held by local museums and archives. These are excellent materials for teaching about local history, the Okanagan region, primary sources, and other creative topics. Students can find images of the Okanagan from over 100 years ago to inspire their curiosity and complement their work.

Description
For over two decades, the Sanofi Biogenius Canada (SBC) program has nurtured young minds by challenging high school students to carry out groundbreaking research projects in the field of biotechnology. Grade 9-12 students apply in the fall to participate in the SBC program. Those selected for the SBC competition are matched with local mentors, giving students hands-on research experience in a professional lab setting. Participants compile their results and present their findings at regional competitions, vying for cash prizes and the chance to advance to the National and International Biogenius competitions. In past years, participant research projects ranged from cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, to agriculture and the environment. Many have since been patented and commercialized, garnering international media attention and igniting a true culture of innovation in Canada. Description
The PIR Live Event program engages classrooms across Canada in dynamic online webinars about a range of topics, introducing students to Canadian researchers, professionals, and facilities. Each PIR Live Event webinar features a Q&A with a different guest expert and/or a virtual tour of a research facility — and it’s FREE to participate! Classrooms across Canada can join the discussion by submitting their questions during the webinar and getting answers in real time from our guest expert. If you can’t participate at the scheduled time for a PIR Live Event, you can submit your questions in advance to liveevent@pirweb.org and watch the video recording afterward on the Partners In Research YouTube channel with your class to hear the answers! PIR Live Events are interactive, dynamic, and a great way to bring virtual experts and other classrooms into your classroom. Description
Sky, Water, Earth is a collection of free, online, self-paced experiences that takes the form of a career preparation initiative for youths interested in the field of science. This is a year-long joint initiative between UBC Faculty of Education, the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre, and the HR MacMillan Space Centre that runs from September 2017 to September 2018. The project guides youths to participate in learning playlists that help them build competencies outlined by the National Research Council Canada (NRC), some of which overlap with the BC Curriculum Core Competencies. Learners choose playlists they want to work on, each highlighting one or more of the NRC competencies for excellence in research - such as creative thinking, communication, teamwork, and more. Students complete competency-based activities through playlists, and earn points which can be redeemed for a variety of unique Real-World Opportunities curated to build success in their future careers.
