When children learn about the individual nature of animals such as grizzly bears, they learn to care about their fate and also recognize the fragility of our ecosystems and the role humans play within it. This unit of study highlights the importance of grizzlies to our environment, provides students with a better understanding of the role they play in the ecosystem, and how we as citizens can help to keep bears (and our communities) safe. The unit of study was designed to align with the BC curriculum, allowing for easy adoption by educators, and contains five 45 minute lessons, with accompanying teaching tools. An extension pack containing grizzly bear artefacts, trivia playing cards, and a size chart is available to borrow.

Description
This lesson is the introduction to a unit on Ancient Civilizations and introducing Ancient Rome. This lesson fits in with the Historical Thinking Project’s Big 6, specifically the concepts Establish Historical Significance as well as Historical Perspectives. Historical significance depends on any given student’s perspective on history. To have a historical perspective as a modern student can be challenging with this generation immersed in technology. Some historical landmarks included, but not limited to are the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Baths of Caracalla, Saint Peters Basilica, the Temple of Saturn the Roman Forum, the Vatican, Circus Maximus, Piazza Navona, Castel Sant’Angelo and St John in the Lateran. As Grade 7 curricular content, this exercise is focused on Ancient civilizations up until 7th Century, so it would be ideal to choose landmarks within this time period, but up to the discretion of the teacher.

Description
A lesson plan on propaganda maps geared towards 20th Century World History 12 (adaptable to Political Studies 12 or Social Studies 11). In the modern era, students are constantly surrounded by digital and non-digital forms of persuasion. This is not new: propaganda and persuasion have long been used to influence the perspectives of citizens. Maps are spatially malleable and subject to intentional distortion, for military, geopolitical, economic and/or other aims. These persuasion techniques emerge in modern media. Students are first exposed to a variety of persuasive maps, where they learn to identify and critically analyze the aims and audiences of these maps. Then students are divided into groups that act as public relations companies who have been contracted to make a map that persuades U.K. audiences to vote to either leave or remain in the E.U. This activity increases understanding of how persuasive tools are used and how citizens must be critical consumers of information.

Description
This activity sets an exciting tone of exploration and discovery, encouraging an inquiry mindset in students that helps establish a community of curious, active learners. Students gain tools to explore the natural world—and are inspired to discover and attempt to explain the abundant nature mysteries that surround us. NSI works well at the start of a field experience, to get students excited about nature mysteries.

Description
In this activity, students investigate the fascinating and complex process of decomposition and lay the foundation for deeper understanding of concepts related to matter and energy transfer in ecosystems. Through exploration and discussion, students go beyond simple definitions. Instead, students discover key characteristics of decomposition as they struggle with creating a sequence for decomposing wood and leaves. They learn the difference between physical decomposition and chemical decomposition and that many things contribute to decomposition, but certain organisms are classified as decomposers. They also search for and discuss evidence of decomposers, make model diagrams to further develop their ideas about the process of decomposition, and discuss decomposition and its role in the cycling of matter. Finally, students are challenged to recognize the evidence and impact of decomposition in the ecosystems they explore.

Students will: - Explore, observe, and compare samples of decomposing materials and use reasoning to determine the level of decomposition among them - Search for and classify decomposers (or evidence of them) as fungi, bacteria or invertebrates - Investigate and discuss decomposition as the process of breaking down dead organisms and their waste materials into smaller and simpler forms of matter - Create a model diagram for the process of decomposition - Discuss the role decomposers play in making matter available to living plants

Description
During the activity, students pick up a natural object, such as a leaf, and make “I notice…” statements out loud with a partner, then share some of their observations with the group. They do the same with “I wonder…” questions, and with “It reminds me of…” connections. Then, students practice using these tools while exploring whatever they find interesting. This simple routine can help students get beyond seeing nature as a “green blur,” and lead them to never be bored in nature again.

Description
Students take a census of an outdoor site, and look for organisms that perform different “jobs” in the biotic community. A biotic (or natural) community is made up of the various organisms that live and interact with one another in a particular environment. As in a human community, its members have different roles and depend on each other for survival. In this activity, students examine a study area to find out what organisms live there and the ecological jobs or niches they fill.

A project-based learning activity in which students assess their community's ability to respond to crises and develop ideas for making it more resilient. Students participate in project-based learning over several days as they assess their community's ability to respond to crises that threaten both natural and human systems. Then they develop ideas for redesigning their community to be more resilient.

Description
With animation, interactivity, and sound effects, Starting with Soil demonstrates how plants and animals cooperate to make the soil we need to grow healthy food. Kids learn that soil starts with bare rock and discover how long it takes nature to make one inch of topsoil. (Spoiler alert: it takes 500 years!) Different chapters convey the importance of pollinators and the critical roles animals, the weather, microorganisms, and cover crops play in organic farming. Designed for students ages 7-9, Starting with Soil allows users to plant seeds, build a compost pile, drag a microscope over different organisms in soil to get a better look, and view the symbiosis at work when corn, beans, and squash are planted together.

Understanding Food and Climate Change: A Systems Perspective explores the links between food systems and our changing climate with an emphasis on systems thinking. A systems approach helps to illuminate how seemingly disconnected phenomena are often dynamically linked and can be understood best when viewed in a larger context. Matter cycles. Matter for growth, maintenance and reproduction in all organisms cycles through the ecosystem and Earth processes. All life needs certain matter in order to stay alive. Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "Age of Steamers” from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. In a province as vast as British Columbia, the focus in this film is the introduction of sternwheelers and steamships that allowed greater movement and mobility and how they impacted the development of the colony and province in the Gold Rush era and beyond. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. Description
This document contains tips and tricks for teaching the newly proposed Environmental Science coursework that will be implemented with the BC Draft Curriculum in the near future. My goal was to provide teaching strategies, assessment suggestions, field trip opportunities, and classroom ideas that are student led learning opportunities. In this document, you will NOT find worksheets or seat work. My hope was to provide invigorating ideas involving Environmental Science that will spark debate and critical thinking in your classroom. This document may be used or adapted for any science class. This was done as a Teach BC Assignment for my education coursework with the UNBC Education Program. I hope you enjoy it!

Description
This curriculum resource was produced by and for teachers in partnership with the Wilderness Committee, wildlife biologists and curriculum specialists. It’s intended to give students Grades 8 to 12 the opportunity to learn about species at risk in British Columbia in their local environment, understand the threats and identify what they can do to help. Module 1 is an introduction to species at risk while Module 2 specifically focuses on amphibians. Each module uses a project-based learning approach where students will be introduced to the topic, then develop field investigative skills and participate in citizen science. Our resource contains links to valuable multimedia resources as well as ideas to help students connect with species at risk in their community.
