Description: This activity explains the history of the Chinese calendar and celebration of Chinese New Year. Students will make comparisons between the Chinese and Gregorian calendars and examine characteristics and elements of the year of the Ox.

Learning Standards: This three-page information package highlights this year's Chinese New Year and the Year of the Ox. Students learn about the characteristics of an Ox, including well-known celebrities who are also Oxes. As well, students will learn about the history and origins of the Chinese calendar and will identify the similarities and differences between the Chinese and more popular Gregorian calendar. Finally, students can respond to reading comprehension questions.

Description: This lesson plan looks to establish not only the relation between author and narrator in a text, but seeks to explain the context behind choices of high and low language, and how we use them in day to day life. As an introduction to language registers, this lesson will cover the basics of familiar language, standard language, and affected language, and highlights possibilities for adaptations in the ELL sphere. Though it remains specific to a single novel study, it can be amended to fit a variety of mediums.
