This lesson is suitable for Social Studies classes studying the First World War and the Canadian Home Front as well as curriculum examining gender and racial tensions in the work force of early British Columbia. The time period of the lesson is set in the closing months of the war and the early recovery period from the Great War to early 1919. Additional overlapping intrigues to the women struggling for fair wages and better working conditions in the steam laundries of Vancouver was the death of Ginger Goodwin and the threats of a General Strike raised by the Vancouver Trades and Labour Council, as well as the onset of the Spanish Influenza Pandemic. The lesson materials also examine the racial conflict between the steam laundries and the Chinese hand laundries. Critical thinking and the use of primary sources are at the core of the lesson activities.

Students should have some general knowledge about World War I, and in particular the causes of WWI. It would also be beneficial if the students had some cursory knowledge of the concept of nationalism. The students start by watching speeches by Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin to detect nationalism in their speeches. Then the students read a primer on nationalism to further inform their thinking. Lastly, the students will read three nationalistic speeches by Georges Clemenceau, Lloyd George, and Kaiser Wilhelm. As the students are reading they should fill out the Nationalistic Speeches Handout. Once they are done, they will pick the speech they find most convincing and justify their choice. This lesson can be split up and delivered online or hard copy. I provide a single-point rubric, but you may wish to change it to your own liking. Feel free to modify.

The students should have some general knowledge of the Dark Ages and monarchs. This lesson is comprised of a few activities. To begin the students watch a brief video on Charlemagne. After they are done, they will read a short biography of Charlemagne. The students' task is to appoint their own royal court. 10 noble's biographies are included. The students are to pick 5 advisors (economic, political, religious, military, foreign affairs) from the 10 nobles and explain their choices. Once they are done they will write a short diary entry, explaining what it would have been like to be Charlemagne and appoint the court. Please feel free to modify to suit your needs.

This activity will fill the requirements set forth by the BC curriculum that at the grade 5 level, students in Core French should be able to know French phonemes; and this is all part of the ability to say the number of the date of your birthday, and the month, correctly. The curriculum also states that students be able to participate in simple interactions dealing with daily life. Knowing one`s birthday is often information that is asked and shared, especially amongst younger people. Finally, the curriculum states that students at the grade 5 Core French level be able to convey basic information about themselves, and there are many instances in which being able to identify your date of birth is not only useful, but necessary.

This lesson is the introduction to a unit on Ancient Civilizations and introducing Ancient Rome. This lesson fits in with the Historical Thinking Project’s Big 6, specifically the concepts Establish Historical Significance as well as Historical Perspectives. Historical significance depends on any given student’s perspective on history. To have a historical perspective as a modern student can be challenging with this generation immersed in technology. Some historical landmarks included, but not limited to are the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Baths of Caracalla, Saint Peters Basilica, the Temple of Saturn the Roman Forum, the Vatican, Circus Maximus, Piazza Navona, Castel Sant’Angelo and St John in the Lateran. As Grade 7 curricular content, this exercise is focused on Ancient civilizations up until 7th Century, so it would be ideal to choose landmarks within this time period, but up to the discretion of the teacher.

A lesson plan on propaganda maps geared towards 20th Century World History 12 (adaptable to Political Studies 12 or Social Studies 11). In the modern era, students are constantly surrounded by digital and non-digital forms of persuasion. This is not new: propaganda and persuasion have long been used to influence the perspectives of citizens. Maps are spatially malleable and subject to intentional distortion, for military, geopolitical, economic and/or other aims. These persuasion techniques emerge in modern media. Students are first exposed to a variety of persuasive maps, where they learn to identify and critically analyze the aims and audiences of these maps. Then students are divided into groups that act as public relations companies who have been contracted to make a map that persuades U.K. audiences to vote to either leave or remain in the E.U. This activity increases understanding of how persuasive tools are used and how citizens must be critical consumers of information.

She was an advocate for trans rights and was known as the “bright light” among Vancouver’s LGBTQ community. This documentary feature film is a celebration of January’s life, among other trans women of colour. This film is about remembering the impact that January had on the lives of everyone she encountered. This film is about uplifting the narratives and lived experiences of trans women of colour. This film is about collectively liberating all marginalized and oppressed people.

Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "Age of Steamers” from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. In a province as vast as British Columbia, the focus in this film is the introduction of sternwheelers and steamships that allowed greater movement and mobility and how they impacted the development of the colony and province in the Gold Rush era and beyond. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. Description
Bullets, Blood and Stones: the journey of a child soldier, brings students face to face with the child soldier situation that occurred in Uganda when infamous warlord, Joseph Kony, abducted 60,000 children and forced them to join his Lord’s Resistance Army. Teachers who have used this book in their classrooms note that student interest is high as the story is fast paced and the characters are very relatable. Real life events in the book provide a perfect teaching opportunity to contrast the lives of children in other parts of the world and challenge the way in which students view themselves and their place in society. Although events in the story are horrifying, there are moments of warmth and humour that are uplifting and give hope to the human condition. Teaching resources, including chapter by chapter discussion questions, activities, and a power point presentation, are available on the resource page of White’s website.

At this point in the course, students are already familiar, with the verb “Ser”, as well as greetings, numbers, and the verbs gustar/encantar. The lesson will focus on the main differences between the verbs Ser vs Estar which are a couple of the most used verbs in the Spanish language. Another reason as to why I am focusing on these verbs is the fact that this pair of verbs can be particularly tricky for those who speak English as their first language, because they are both encompassed by the verb “to be”.

This lesson introduces students to the Renaissance by focusing on art history and important innovations in the art world. Students learn to define a variety of art terms associated with the Renaissance and the Middle Ages and engage with the concept of visual symbolism. Students work towards writing a structured, descriptive paragraph outlining their own imagined symbolic Renaissance Portrait. By using writing planners and scaffolds, students write how they use symbolism to represent 5 of their personality traits in their Renaissance-inspired portrait. This lesson was originally designed for use in a Humanities 8 class (with scaffolding for ELL students). This lesson could be adapted for use in a variety of Art, Social Studies, English, and ELL contexts.
