In the process of “thinking globally but acting locally,” students will learn what challenges face peoples in Afghanistan. Following the reading of The Breadwinner, students will review selected articles from The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and demonstrate that they understand the concepts of human rights and of human rights violations through identifying and exploring human rights violations as portrayed within the novel. Students will be introduced to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. They will demonstrate that they understand the concepts of the rights of the child and of the violation of those rights through identifying and exploring human rights violations as portrayed within the novel Parvana’s Journey. Students will then explore and research an organization or a charity of their choice. By collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data related to an organization or a charity, they will begin to assess the impact of their financial contribution

The Canadian Letters and Images Project is an online archive of the Canadian war experience, from any war, as told through the letters and images of Canadians themselves. Begun in August 2000, the Project is located in the Department of History at Vancouver Island University. Through the digitization of contemporary letters, diaries, photographs, and other related materials, the Project permits Canadians to tell their story, and Canada’s story, through their own words and images. It seeks to help students build drug literacy as they consider the psychoactive properties of one of our favourite drugs – chocolate. Roald Dahl provides rich content for exploring the positive attractiveness, but also the destructive potential, of psychoactive substances. The lesson examines the working life of at the Burrard Dry Dock during the Second World War, when women entered the workforce in unheard of numbers. Additional lesson material deals with photographic and poster material related to women’s roles in the war effort. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. The lesson starts off with review of what is entrepreneurship and then goes into the art of the handshake with discussion, video, and examples. Students get the opportunity to practice giving handshakes and from there The Pitch is introduced. Students take a census of an outdoor site, and look for organisms that perform different “jobs” in the biotic community. A biotic (or natural) community is made up of the various organisms that live and interact with one another in a particular environment. As in a human community, its members have different roles and depend on each other for survival. In this activity, students examine a study area to find out what organisms live there and the ecological jobs or niches they fill.

Class 1 A short video documentary, filmed at a Siwash Gathering in Tsilhqot'in territory (near Sugar Cane), introduces the game of Lahal. Learners will listen and watch to learn not only the rules of the game, but also the purpose both past and present. Learners will learn about the materials, the hand signals as well as the object and procedures of the game. Learners will be introduced the the value this game holds for the Tsihlqot'in community both past and present. Learners will then be asked to calculate theoretical probabilities of certain results in the game. Class 2 Learners will be introduced to experiential probability and will have an opportunity to conduct a math experiment in small groups. Follow up Learners will have a chance to reflect on their learning after watching a first nation's dance celebrating Laval. Finally, if the teacher wishes, the actual game of Lahal can be played! Worksheets, links to videos, music, etc. provided.
