- Description
- Gratitude is linked with many physical, social and emotional benefits and is an important skill to foster with children and youth. When choosing an action to do so, however, research indicates that if the activity is forced or feels like homework it isn’t a good match. The outcome isn’t authentic and the results fall short of the potential benefits that experiencing gratitude offers. The most effective gratitude activities are ones that engage children’s interests and strengths.

- Description
- For children to strengthen their ability to manage their behaviour when they are experiencing strong feelings, an essential skill is to identify their feelings. It is never too early to talk to children about feelings, build their feeling vocabulary and to help them see the link between feelings and behaviour. Linking these together demonstrates how our feelings can affect the choices we make. It can also improve children’s emotional-management.

- A Getting to Know You Session is intended to provide clarity about both the differences and the similarities between the “focus child” and the other students. Using a powerpoint presentation and class dialogue, photos of the child help to correct assumptions, provide accurate information and begin to remove hesitations about getting to know their classmate. To be successful, it requires an adult facilitator who is able to model non-judgmental, curious and accepting behaviours and who has a relationship with the parents or caregivers of the focus child.

- Children love performing and watching themselves on film. This lesson uses scenario planning, acting, filming and analyzing to practice solving problems peacefully in ways that are relevant and personalized for students. It can be adapted to any age level simply by adjusting the depth of dialogue and complexity of conflict situations. The process helps students develop empathy by providing them with an opportunity to think and apply their knowledge and experience to conflict and problem solving skits. Research shows that empathy is positively linked to peaceful conflict resolution and both predicts successful conflict management as well as reduces the likelihood of getting involved in conflict in the first place.

- Description
- How did a secondary school initiate a culture transformation that virtually eliminated calls to the office for disrespectful behaviour between students in the first 3 months? At John Oliver Secondary School in Vancouver, this radical shift involved several factors: fostered student leadership, informed staff and the following, simple activity that was the catalyst for actions leading to feelings of being respected, valued and safe.

- Description
- Early elementary students experience a tactile and visual lesson about how unkind words can “wrinkle” your heart. The lesson develops emotional intelligence by making the connection between words, actions and feelings. This lesson, when introduced at the beginning of the year, allows educators to refer back to the concept of a wrinkled heart during times when students are having difficulty getting along or being kind.
