The Wealth Inequity Lesson Demonstration (WILD) is a game meant to be played by upper level high school students to support an exploration of global trade relationships. This project was created as a final assignment for a second year Education class at Vancouver Island University (VIU) under the direction and guidance of professor Paula Waatainen. WILD was created to demonstrate how different countries around the globe have different trade capabilities and natural resources available to them. This game highlights how affluent countries will perpetually prosper, while developing countries will struggle to fulfil their resource needs.

Species at Risk Workshops are fun, hands-on, and solutions-oriented conservation workshops that focus on four species at risk in the Salish Sea: Southern Resident Killer Whales, Steller Sea Lions, Basking Sharks, and Leatherback Sea Turtles. These are a series of three inquiry-based workshops, that can be delivered virtually (the educator live streams to a class) or in-person for Grades 4-12. Students brainstorm and implement impactful stewardship projects to engage their schools and communities in aquatic species conservation. Workshops are designed to encourage critical thinking, personal awareness, and social responsibility. For virtual delivery, students are engaged through interactive tools such as Kahoot.

Students are empowered to make changes in their everyday lives to help reduce human-caused threats to species at risk and our oceans. Through their Youth Action Team projects, they are able to see how their actions have real-world impacts. Students learn to be aware of the personal choices they make in their daily lives, and how they can contribute to their communities and make the world a better place. This is all taught through the lens of ocean conservation, with a focus on four species at risk that live in the Salish Sea. Students learn how their actions can impact these animals. A grade 5 level, 7-8 lesson Earth Science unit package focused on the rock cycle and how materials from the earth are used as resources to build homes, roads and other things in our communities. Includes a section on the importance of reclaiming land after mines are closed, and exercises for students to do inside (some requiring parent or teacher supervision) and outside the classroom (suitable for online education). This package was produced by the BC Stone Sand & Gravel Association (a registered non-profit) with thanks to a generous donation from Summit Materials that allowed us to build the package with assistance from the Ontario Stone Sand & Gravel Association. Many thanks also to the volunteer members who spent many hours reviewing and revising the materials to ensure they are ideally suited for use here in BC.

Be the Change Earth Alliance (Vancouver-based Charity) Climate and Connection Unit with 15 Action Packs focused on Environmental and Social Justice, which any teacher can access for free when they sign up online. Where these come from our Student Leadership for Change suite of 40 Action Packs, teachers in your district already using them can update their account to access. Each Action Pack includes a fillable PDF students can work on and send back and can easily be distributed through platforms such as Microsoft Teams. Students explore their world views, connect global issues to a local context and take action appropriate for social distancing before tying it all together through critical reflection. Our curriculum embraces First People’s Principles of Learning and Teachers can see BC course connections and how each pack meets Core Competencies. The revisions attempt to reduce screen time and encourage experiential learning and social connection.

Book Description: Two very different stories intersect with surprising results. Two African children, Kalu and his cousin, Aisha, escape from their village after it's destroyed by rebel soldiers. The kids flee to the coast where they find work on a fishing boat bound for Britain . . . until the nervous fisherman abandons them on Last Chance Island off the coast of Ireland. This activity hopes to bring to life some of the many immigration stories that contribute to Canada's past, present and future. With research, art and some level of performing arts, this activity is designed to be interdisciplinary and engaging for students to understand perspective, and how the change and continuity of Canadian immigration patterns have helped shape our nation. In addition to various assessments that will accompany this activity, students will be given a reflection sheet after the presentations. This will allow them to voice any strengths or stretches they encountered during the activity, and provide their teacher with any mitigating factors that they think should be taken into account during assessment.

Using Canadian examples, the revised 2016 edition is a complete toolkit comprised of 6 modules that touch on issues of International Humanitarian Law such as war crimes, refugees, neglected crises, gender inequality, humanitarian principles, mechanisms for justice and youth engagement.
