Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "Won Alexander Cumyow" from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. The vignette explores the prejudices and racism experienced by Chinese Canadians in the late 19th-early 20th century. Trained as a lawyer but unable to practice law, Won Alexander Cumyow becomes an advocate for the rights of Chinese immigrants in British Columbia. This material can also be used as a background resource for the topic of the Head Tax and the Asiatic Exclusion laws in early 20th Century Canada found in the Social Studies 11 course. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. This is meant as an enrichment activity to dovetail with BC’s resources and economy. Also, it will demonstrate that while treaties, residential schools and the Indian Act set back and damaged Aboriginal culture and development, there are Aboriginal success stories. The lessons bring in themes of good resource management in BC. This offers some enrichment in business planning.

The Violence is Preventable (VIP) program is a comprehensive strategy for connecting schools, educators, students and families with Children Who Witness Abuse (CWWA) programs across the province to improve the health and welfare of children and youth impacted by violence. As provincial coordinator of this school-based prevention program, the BC Society of Transition Houses (BCSTH) supports VIP sites to accomplish the following program goals: • Break the silence of domestic violence by making it safe for children and youth to speak up in schools about their experiences? • Increase teacher, school staff, parent/caregiver, and student awareness about violence in relationships and its effects on child witnesses? • Empower participants to become personally involved in community social justice initiatives; • Motivate students and educators to recognize violence in their everyday lives; and • Facilitate partnerships between schools and communities in order to respond to the emotional, social, academic, and psychological needs of children and youth exposed to domestic violence.

The Israel-Palestine conflict is one of the most controversial issues in our contemporary world. This unit approaches the conflict through the vehicle of narrative constructed through the judicious use of facts and perspectives. The unit materials include a broad spectrum of resources, lesson plans and student assignments that will produce multiple narratives based on individual perspectives. The unit, which was initiated by the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) Representative Assembly, closes with a critical thinking exercise that asks students to identify the obstacles to peace and write their own narrative about the conflict.

Cultures around the world may vary, but one thing is common: wherever we find people, we also find cats and dogs. These education resources, lessons and worksheets aim to educate students about the characteristics of cats and dogs and their needs as domesticated animals. The lessons, student reading, video and activities provide more than just facts about cats and dogs. They help students understand the unique relationships these animals have shared with people for thousands of years. The lesson plans and activities also encourage your students to examine and discuss the important responsibilities people have in caring for cats and dogs and the many different ways that people live with these animals around the world, from country to country and culture to culture.

Description

This guide provides teachers with a framework for teaching environmental education through an integrated approach. Facilitating environmental education within all curriculum areas rather than isolating it shows the importance of the environment on students’ daily lives and within their community. The Experiential Learning Cycle Model (direct experience, critical reflection, conceptionalization) is explained. As well, the principals for conceptualizing environmental education are described through the CARE model (complexity, aesthetics, responsibility, and ethics).

Description
Animation is a relatively overlooked area of art education and educators are not likely to have experience with the positive learning prospects that can be incorporated into the classroom. This medium proposes to encompass all teaching areas to broaden the spectrum of educational possibilities of all types of learners, including those with learning disabilities. Students and teachers show an enthusiasm for the medium but may lack the educational tools or, hold certain assumptions about animation that may make it a difficult medium to use within the confines of the classroom or institution. The intent of this project is to supply the reader with concrete forms and ideas that can assist educators in their attempts to integrate art education with different subject matter. Teaching aids such as simplified lesson plans for animation projects are included as well as discussions surrounding the benefits gained through using animation techniques and its historical development.

This lesson involves using the "jigsaw" method of examining the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's "Call to Action" report. Students are in groups of four and each group receives a section of the Call to Action report (ie. 3 pages per group). Using the worksheet provided, students read, discuss and fill out highlights from the report. Next, the teacher brings the class together and each group shares their findings. In this way, some of the many highlights of the Call to Action report is covered. Finally, students can discuss a possible "action" in support of the report.

This lesson plan looks at Japanese-Canadian internment during WW2 through a study of two children's books: 'Naomi’s Road' by Joy Kogawa, and 'A Place Where Sunflowers Grow' by Amy Lee-Tai. 'Naomi's Road' is a novel about a young girl that relates a tale of unquenchable human spirit, undaunted by prejudice and unable to let go of hope. 'A Place Where Sunflowers Grow' by Amy Lee-Tai looks at imprisonment through the eyes of a child, and offers beautiful, haunting depictions of life in a Japanese internment camp during World War 2.

This text is illustrated with updated graphs, photos and cites the work of hundreds of scientists and organizations such as the IPCC, NASA, Environment Canada, Royal Society of Canada, and Natural Resources Canada, to name a few. My resource is an update on the science of climate change, extreme weather, protecting nature and biodiversity, advancing renewable energy, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions with frequent reference to Canada and in particular British Columbia. Global impacts, mitigation and adaptation are explained throughout the text. My ten years of research cites reputable journals, national and international organizations and the media. Research covers climate change from the Arctic to the Antarctic, projection of climate change, how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, El Nino/La Nina, extreme weather, renewables, the oil sands and transport of bitumen, and Canada's contribution at the UN COP meetings. This book is meant as a resource for our youths to make wise decisions about their future. **Revised edition uploaded October 2020.

Description
Animals are vulnerable beings in that they are subjected to situations beyond their control. Using animals as a bridge to discuss social justice issues can be a way to ease students into more sensitive and personal social justice issues such as racism and stereotyping. Included in this package are some outlined activities and discussion questions that should get the conversation started. These are designed to encourage students to think critically about where their beliefs and ideas come from and help them in their future discussions about issues involving people in society, as well as give them a chance to reflect on their own views on animals.

Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup - 5 years ago
Description
The Shoreline Cleanup Curriculum Guide encourages students to engage with nature in a way that immediately shows them how easy it is to make a positive change to our environment. We developed this K-7 curriculum guide to help you integrate the Shoreline Cleanup into your school year, using both indoor and outdoor lessons for your students. The multi-disciplinary Shoreline Cleanup lessons allow you to connect these lessons to your existing curriculum themes and units of study. You may use the unit as a whole or select individual lesson to compliment your planning. The cross-curricular activities in this guide will have your students making art projects, reading stories, running through obstacle courses, solving math problems, exploring biology and doing what they probably do best – having fun! We hope you are inspired to bring the Shoreline Cleanup into your students’ lives! Register you Schoolyard cleanup at ShorelineCleanup.ca

Description
Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "Solidarity” from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. The vignette examines the response of labour, social groups and environmentalists to sweeping changes introduced by the Social Credit government in 1983. The resulting coalition of protests groups pushed the province to the verge of a general strike before a mediated solution was achieved by Jack Munro. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history.
