- Description
- The Healthy Habits Challenge is a 30 day initiative where students can track 6 healthy habits on an online platform. Data is sent weekly to teachers. The Healthy Habits notes are: healthy eating, physical activity, screen time, water intake, sleep time, and mental health (journaling). Challenges are run three times per year and classes or whole schools can sign up. The entire challenge is turnkey and all resources are FREE. The challenges are supported by our team, our resources, and prizes can include athlete visits, gym banners for most active schools, and much more. The goal of the challenges are to instil healthy habits at the elementary school age and allow the students to learn about accountability and goal setting while providing data on progress.

- Description
- Dancing Backwards Society's free, downloadable school program, www.dancingbackwards.ca, celebrates Canada's women in political leadership and Indigenous women in governance. This online course for teachers of grades 5-8 focuses on engaged citizenship, gender equality, and the need for gender parity in decision making. The program provides teachers with multi-media lesson plans and activities that culminate in a final project in which students discover and document the story of one political woman in leadership or governance in Canada. Their 3-minute storytellings are then added to the website’s ever-expanding Her Story Archive, cementing women’s political contributions into history. Dancing Backwards satisfies various curriculum criteria for BC and all other provinces in Social Studies, English, Arts Education, and History (https://www.dancingbackwards.ca/the-program/learning-standards-outcomes-by-province

- The Digitized Okanagan History project provides online access to historical materials from BC's Southern Interior. We digitize photographs, documents, maps, newspapers, and other records held by local museums and archives. These are excellent materials for teaching about local history, the Okanagan region, primary sources, and other creative topics. Students can find images of the Okanagan from over 100 years ago to inspire their curiosity and complement their work.

- This document contains tips and tricks for teaching the newly proposed Environmental Science coursework that will be implemented with the BC Draft Curriculum in the near future. My goal was to provide teaching strategies, assessment suggestions, field trip opportunities, and classroom ideas that are student led learning opportunities. In this document, you will NOT find worksheets or seat work. My hope was to provide invigorating ideas involving Environmental Science that will spark debate and critical thinking in your classroom. This document may be used or adapted for any science class. This was done as a Teach BC Assignment for my education coursework with the UNBC Education Program. I hope you enjoy it!

- A 'Book and Media List' of reviewed literature and media (film, websites) for children. This "green reads" book and media list was compiled over several years as part of a BCTF Inquiry Project with TELA and EEPSA members. The final inquiry question was: As an elementary teacher, how can I use selected children's literature and media as a springboard for experiencing and connecting to nature in our school and community environments?

- Description
- Students take a census of an outdoor site, and look for organisms that perform different “jobs” in the biotic community. A biotic (or natural) community is made up of the various organisms that live and interact with one another in a particular environment. As in a human community, its members have different roles and depend on each other for survival. In this activity, students examine a study area to find out what organisms live there and the ecological jobs or niches they fill.

- Description
- A free online course created by TRAC Tenant Resource and Advisory Centre and the Justice Education Society. Designed for first-time renters, the course covers both practical and legal topics to consider before deciding to rent. Students can complete activities such as creating a budget, thinking about their housing needs, preparing a list of references, writing a cover letter and pet resume, and ordering a credit report. The course is video-based, and sections can be viewed in any order. Students who complete the course and pass the final exam earn a certificate that can be presented to landlords when they apply for tenancy. By completing the course, students will be better equipped to find rental housing and succeed in their tenancies. Core skills, such as financial literacy, smart decision making, effective communication, and problem solving are a key focus of the material.

- Description
- For over two decades, the Sanofi Biogenius Canada (SBC) program has nurtured young minds by challenging high school students to carry out groundbreaking research projects in the field of biotechnology. Grade 9-12 students apply in the fall to participate in the SBC program. Those selected for the SBC competition are matched with local mentors, giving students hands-on research experience in a professional lab setting. Participants compile their results and present their findings at regional competitions, vying for cash prizes and the chance to advance to the National and International Biogenius competitions. In past years, participant research projects ranged from cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, to agriculture and the environment. Many have since been patented and commercialized, garnering international media attention and igniting a true culture of innovation in Canada. - Description
- "Secret Path" was written by Gord Downie and illustrated by Jeff Lemire and illustrates the hardship and history of residential schooling in Canada . This book was inspired by an Anishinaabe boy named Chanie Wenjack who ran away from his residential school in 1966 and died on the way to his home with the Marten Falls First Nation. The story is a graphic novel accompanied by a soundtrack written by Downie, and was released in October of 2016. The release of the book was followed by an hour long special on CBC that tells the story in animation with the soundtrack. All of the proceeds from the book, album, and performance will go to the National Center for Truth and Reconciliation. Here are some ideas for centers/stations that could compliment the use of Secret Path as a resource in text, soundtrack and film forms. The book has immense possibilities and because of its graphic novel form it could be adapted to suit the needs (and appropriateness) of a variety of grades and subjects.

- Description
- Sky, Water, Earth is a collection of free, online, self-paced experiences that takes the form of a career preparation initiative for youths interested in the field of science. This is a year-long joint initiative between UBC Faculty of Education, the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre, and the HR MacMillan Space Centre that runs from September 2017 to September 2018. The project guides youths to participate in learning playlists that help them build competencies outlined by the National Research Council Canada (NRC), some of which overlap with the BC Curriculum Core Competencies. Learners choose playlists they want to work on, each highlighting one or more of the NRC competencies for excellence in research - such as creative thinking, communication, teamwork, and more. Students complete competency-based activities through playlists, and earn points which can be redeemed for a variety of unique Real-World Opportunities curated to build success in their future careers.

- Description
- With animation, interactivity, and sound effects, Starting with Soil demonstrates how plants and animals cooperate to make the soil we need to grow healthy food. Kids learn that soil starts with bare rock and discover how long it takes nature to make one inch of topsoil. (Spoiler alert: it takes 500 years!) Different chapters convey the importance of pollinators and the critical roles animals, the weather, microorganisms, and cover crops play in organic farming. Designed for students ages 7-9, Starting with Soil allows users to plant seeds, build a compost pile, drag a microscope over different organisms in soil to get a better look, and view the symbiosis at work when corn, beans, and squash are planted together.
