- The year is 1841 and the Act of Union has just been signed. The last four or five years have been very chaotic in the Canadas and now that the rebellions, the Durham Report, and the Act of Union are in the past, it is time to look back and create a commemorative magazine about this important time in Canadian history.

- Description
- Link to Laura Candler's File Cabinet on Cooperative Learning: Cooperative learning is a powerful teaching strategy that's more than just a passing fad. Research has shown that when implemented properly, students in cooperative learning classrooms outperform their peers in traditional classrooms. The key is knowing how to implement the strategies to foster interaction while making sure all students are held accountable. Dr. Spencer Kagan developed the "structural" approach to cooperative learning, and I've found it to be extremely effective. I highly recommend his book Cooperative Learning which is available from Amazon.com.

- Blue Planet Links (www.blueplanetlinks.ca) organizes over 300 links to water-related websites, books and articles, featuring a fresh look and the most up-to-date design. We are poised to be the go-to teaching resource for all things H20. See Teaching Resources to explore a countless array of unit lessons for different grades, or check out Non-Fiction and Activities for classroom games and projects. Older students could be encouraged to use the site for research as we feature sections with links devoted to such topics as aquaculture, climate change, groundwater, pollution; almost every water-related topic you can think of. Water is becoming a heavier topic to discuss in the classroom as it is over-used and abused. Students are learning of severe droughts, plastic-filled oceans, decreasing salmon runs… and are rightfully asking questions. Blue Planet Links puts the resources to thoughtfully engage with these critical issues at your fingertips, and theirs!

- The Echo Project is about exploring an aspect of 20th century Canadian history through a generational lens. This is done by making a personal connection to the past through interviews and scouring intimate primary documents such as family journals, letters, and photographs as well as what students find with broader research. Students think critically about sources and patterns, develop historical empathy, and get creative with how they represent the past. While many students choose topics related to the World War II era, they may discover they have ties to stories and events before or after the war such as the Great Depression of the 1930s or the Postwar era of the 1950s and 60s.

- Description
- States of matter can be more than just your average solids, liquids and gases! When water turns into snow, is it still water? The answer is yes! Our world is filled with solids, liquids, gases and even other matter that can go from one state of matter to another without changing its chemical substance. In this unit, students explore these different states of matter and their interactions. Students can make non-Newtonian fluids, observe how temperature and pressure affect matter, and explore solutions.

- Description
- The material offers an introduction to refugee and displacement issues for students in grade 6 and up. The educational resources are the result of a collaborative effort between the graduate school class (summer 2008) of Dr. Jan Stewart, Director of the Institute for War-Affected Children at Global College, University of Winnipeg and Médecins Sans Frontières/ Doctors Without Borders (MSF). The materials were developed based upon an earlier MSF educational publication: “A Refugee Camp in the City, On Assignment” Teachers Guide, MSF Canada (2003). We hope these five lesson plans will encourage students to continue to learn and understand the challenges more than 50 million refugees and internally displaced people face worldwide

- Description
- Most viewed on Miss Casella's Classroom. Sherman Smith saw the most terrible thing happen. We the readers are not informed of what it was. This story is gently told and illustrated. It is a call-out to reinforce how negative emotions manifest inside of us. Violent acts, don't always have to be stereotype examples involving people. Violence includes natural disasters, like floods or hurricanes. A car accident or a fire are other examples. Please know, we are all wearing the ruby slippers. We all have the power within ourselves to move forward in our lives. No, it isn't always easy. Remember, taking the first step, in anything, is the hardest step. Talk to someone today!

- Description
- The Canadian Letters and Images Project is an online archive of the Canadian war experience, from any war, as told through the letters and images of Canadians themselves. Begun in August 2000, the Project is located in the Department of History at Vancouver Island University. Through the digitization of contemporary letters, diaries, photographs, and other related materials, the Project permits Canadians to tell their story, and Canada’s story, through their own words and images. The Teacher's Guide contains 12 English Language Arts and Social Studies lessons that support curricular competencies associated with historical thinking.

- Description
- Canadian Prime Ministers come to life! There are two series of videos being currently made by this YouTube Channel. The first is a long version of each PM (between 6-12 minutes each) which incorporates all different aspects of history, including indigenous issues, and ends with a critical thinking question. The materials go in depth into each Prime Minister and the issues in his time, including Indigenous history, international issues, and what life was like for people in this time. The second series is called 'Minister in a Minute' and sums up each Prime Minister in one minute. Retrospect aims to add more Canadian content to YouTube. Feedback welcome!!

- Description
- A Getting to Know You Session is intended to provide clarity about both the differences and the similarities between the “focus child” and the other students. Using a powerpoint presentation and class dialogue, photos of the child help to correct assumptions, provide accurate information and begin to remove hesitations about getting to know their classmate. To be successful, it requires an adult facilitator who is able to model non-judgmental, curious and accepting behaviours and who has a relationship with the parents or caregivers of the focus child.
