Description
Storytelling is a favorite way to develop personal and social responsibility. Stories teach by attraction rather than by compulsion. They invite rather than impose. Stories capture the imagination and stir strong feelings. Stories give hope and encouragement. They stir minds to think about other ideas and choices that are possible. The personal and social responsibility characteristics that form the basis of this unit are based on the Gitxsan understanding of seven foundation traits — the “seven Grandfathers shown on seven stones.”

Description
In this unit, students will learn to identify how animals were and continue to be relied upon and an important part of the lives of First Peoples — furs and skins for clothing and shelter, meat for food, bone and antler for tools and weapons, etc. Sharing stories and teachings from various First Peoples of the province of British Columbia will shed light on the diversity of the peoples, as well as a range of concepts in understanding the important role animals played in the beliefs, traditions and lives of the peoples. The resources used in this unit represent a variety of regions, including the Northwest Coast, Shuswap (Secwepemc), and Nunavut (Inuit), and the relevance of different animals in each location. To supplement these resources, teachers are encouraged to look for relevant oral and printed texts from the local region.

Description
Long ago, First Peoples had an understanding of celestial objects that allowed them to make decisions crucial to sustainability. Through storytelling, the people were able to explain that which might otherwise not be understood. The metaphysical existence of the sun, moon and stars was important and relevant to the people in ways that science today portrays on a different level. Long before modern day scientist and technology, First Peoples relied on celestial objects in many facets of life. These lessons will help students understand the importance of the sun, moon and stars to Aboriginal people.

Description
For years, math resources have been introducing probability using illustrations such as flipping coins, spinning wheels, throwing dice, drawing marbles from a bag, and drawing/dealing playing cards. Although these situations lend themselves to teaching the concept of probability, and most students can relate to the items used, Aboriginal guessing games offer a fresh, entertaining, and culturally relevant means of teaching probability. This unit can be used to help students achieve the following Prescribed Learning Outcomes for Mathematics 8: D1 critique ways in which data is presented; D2 solve problems involving the probability of independent events.

Description
There are many different applications of math that relate both directly and indirectly to salmon, thus enriching the curriculum and appealing to the many different learning styles and backgrounds found in most BC classrooms. Math 9 PLOs: D1 describe the effect of bias, use of language, ethics, cost, time and timing, and privacy, cultural sensitivity on the collection of data; D2 select and defend the choice of using either a population or a sample of a population to answer a question; D3 develop and implement a project plan for the collection, display, and analysis of data by formulating a question for investigation, choosing a data collection method that includes social considerations, selecting a population or a sample, collecting the data, displaying the collected data in an appropriate manner, drawing conclusions to answer the question; D4 demonstrate an understanding of the role of probability in society.

Description
This unit provides an opportunity for teachers and students to select from a mix of dramatic texts (stage plays, screenplays, films) that reflect First Peoples themes and perspectives. Opportunities for memorization (internalization) of text and for polishing of oral delivery skills are one important aspect of the unit. Students are also encouraged to reflect on the production realities associated with these types of texts.

Description
This unit is designed as a series of parts loosely based on literary form; there are parts for drama, film, radio, and written text. Primarily, humour is found in the performance form, hence the focus on performance; humour found in the written form is more subtle. This unit can be taught in conjunction with the Trickster Unit; however, the units exist as separate entities. The trickster figure appears in many literary forms; sometimes he is funny, sometimes not. To link together the Humour and Trickster Units, there is a cumulative concept map assignment (see Unit 11: Trickster) to which students may add as each part is completed. The idea of a concept map can be very difficult for students to grasp however, so the idea is introduced in the Only Drunks and Children Tell the Truth lessons on a smaller scale, and is revisited again on an even smaller scale as a plot outline in Humour in the Written Form.

Description
This project is a process by which students learn about a First Peoples issue or topic and communicate their knowledge to others. Many students are unaware that their lives are inextricably linked with the lives of First Peoples all over the world. We all live on the planet, we all share in the resources of the earth, and we must all take responsibility for our actions. Nobody can live in isolation. The world will be a better place when all of us work together to make it so. By doing this research project, students will become spokespersons for an ethical, humane, and fair Earth. The range of topics covered shows the students that everybody has a role to play in making the world a wholesome and happy place to live. We all must come to understand each other.

Description
This extensive novel study introduces students to Maria Campbell’s Halfbreed, a ground-breaking work not only for the Métis, but also in terms of raising awareness of issues for all Canadian Aboriginal peoples. Questions of identity in the novel link to history and family, and in more contemporary times to extended social community.

Description
Identity is a frequently explored theme in Aboriginal literature; as such, identity can easily become the focus for studying many texts. In this unit, Richard Wagamese’s novel Keeper’n Me is the central text studied by all students in the class, using a literature circle technique. Other texts such as short stories, poetry, and essays can also be examined in order to enrich the theme of identity begun by reading the novel. In order to allow students reading time between literature circle sessions, the other literary forms are presented as parts, or strands, of the unit. The following “Scope and Sequence” chart is included as a suggested approach for conducting a thematic unit on identity using multiple texts, though all parts of the unit need not be taught.

Description
This unit looks at selections from In Search of April Raintree by Beatrice Culleton Mosionier, and examines how Métis people establish identity when their ties to history, family, and community have been cut by foster care and alienation. This part also examines the tragedies that occur when identity is lost.

Description
The introductory unit sets the context for the course, with a particular emphasis on establishing awareness of First Peoples pedagogy and of the key features that make this course unique. Given the unique nature of this course, it is important for the teacher to establish a classroom environment that is welcoming and supportive. This unit includes a variety of activities for teachers to work with, including opportunities for community building, establishing the ground rules for respectful contribution and handling conflict, understanding and beginning to work with First Peoples’ pedagogical approaches, and much more. Much of the work of this unit involves students participating in small and large group discussion, as well personal response writing.

Description
The Métis have often been called The Forgotten People because they have been marginalized in history through exclusion from the governmental financial structures that feature in First Nations communities, and from broad treaty-land claims processes. Often there is a lot of confusion about who the Métis were and are. This introduction will give students and teachers a sense of Métis history and culture from the historic fur trading days to contemporary times as well as raise broader questions about nationhood and personal identity.

Description
Using Eden Robinson’s novel Monkey Beach as a primary text, the students will explore the issue of lost people that is so resonant in First Peoples communities; beyond the novel, students will have the opportunity to examine other texts such as short stories, poetry, and essays that complement this theme. When studying the novel, the instructional methods will focus on literature circles (small-group, student-centred approach to the novel that allows all students in the class to have a voice) and reader response (writing to learn, not always as a finished, polished draft). When studying the other texts, the instructional methods will be a mixture of large-group and small-group activities that invite student voice for interpretation.

Description
This fun-filled activity allows students to put on a simple production of "T'was the night before Christmas" in both French and English. In order to provide maximum participation, a teacher may wish to divide the lines of this classic poem so that each student recites 2 or 3 lines at a time. Each student would bring props, costumes and any set designs they wish. Be sure to allow students to take ownership of all aspects of the production (casting roles, direction, costumes, speech coaches, props manager, etc.). In the end, be sure to invite other classes to come watch this 5 minute performance. It's sure to put a jolly smile on students' faces.

Description
Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "Trouble on the Line” from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. The vignette explores the role of female telephone operators in British Columbia and their activism that contributed to the first strike in the Canadian Telephone industry. The supporting lesson materials focus on the role and challenges that women had in creating a voice and place for themselves in the early telephone industry as well as their role in shaping the early union movement in the province. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history.
