- Description
- Gratitude is linked with many physical, social and emotional benefits and is an important skill to foster with children and youth. When choosing an action to do so, however, research indicates that if the activity is forced or feels like homework it isn’t a good match. The outcome isn’t authentic and the results fall short of the potential benefits that experiencing gratitude offers. The most effective gratitude activities are ones that engage children’s interests and strengths.

- Description
- A Getting to Know You Session is intended to provide clarity about both the differences and the similarities between the “focus child” and the other students. Using a powerpoint presentation and class dialogue, photos of the child help to correct assumptions, provide accurate information and begin to remove hesitations about getting to know their classmate. To be successful, it requires an adult facilitator who is able to model non-judgmental, curious and accepting behaviours and who has a relationship with the parents or caregivers of the focus child.

- Description
- The Heart-Mind Well-Being “heart” is a powerful tool for fostering social and emotional development and well-being in children, youth and adults. It was created as a visual representation of five positive human qualities that researcher from the fields of developmental and educational psychology and human development tell us are essential to promoting overall well-being. The heart framework offers a way for caring adults to organize, plan and inspire to create environments and opportunities that contribute to healthy learning and development.

- Description
- Group agreements (not rules!) help to create safe and caring spaces that will enhance any group activity. They serve as a set of clear, co-created guidelines to help participants feel comfortable with each other in an atmosphere of safety, respect and trust. Everyone shares the responsibility for the experience and once developed, a group can regularly re-visit the agreements to see if they are still working and make changes if issues come up.

- The Violence is Preventable (VIP) program is a comprehensive strategy for connecting schools, educators, students and families with Children Who Witness Abuse (CWWA) programs across the province to improve the health and welfare of children and youth impacted by violence. As provincial coordinator of this school-based prevention program, the BC Society of Transition Houses (BCSTH) supports VIP sites to accomplish the following program goals: • Break the silence of domestic violence by making it safe for children and youth to speak up in schools about their experiences? • Increase teacher, school staff, parent/caregiver, and student awareness about violence in relationships and its effects on child witnesses? • Empower participants to become personally involved in community social justice initiatives; • Motivate students and educators to recognize violence in their everyday lives; and • Facilitate partnerships between schools and communities in order to respond to the emotional, social, academic, and psychological needs of children and youth exposed to domestic violence.

- Description
- Circle Sharing can encourage students to feel secure and calm. It encourages healthy relationships amongst youth in their classrooms and schools that promotes “integration”. According to author and psychiatrist Dan Seigel when we integrate within relationships, we honour differences between ourselves and others, This promotes linkages through compassionate understanding and communication. Integration creates harmony.
