- Description
- The Healthy Habits Challenge is a 30 day initiative where students can track 6 healthy habits on an online platform. Data is sent weekly to teachers. The Healthy Habits notes are: healthy eating, physical activity, screen time, water intake, sleep time, and mental health (journaling). Challenges are run three times per year and classes or whole schools can sign up. The entire challenge is turnkey and all resources are FREE. The challenges are supported by our team, our resources, and prizes can include athlete visits, gym banners for most active schools, and much more. The goal of the challenges are to instil healthy habits at the elementary school age and allow the students to learn about accountability and goal setting while providing data on progress.

- Description
- I have been collecting great ideas and have put them together into a slide deck that can serve as a place for collection of evidence and reflections. This slide deck was the base of our work (feel free to take, modify and use it with your classes). https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1KZm4liDMUkQ3Y9KoF_0vCxutL2zeIJmsggYslflsmQM/edit?usp=sharing We used the Chrome extension called "Alice Keeler's Webcam Recording" to record our personal introduction videos. We used the chrome extension "Screencastify" to take screenshots of pictures or pages on the screen that showed work or areas of interest. We typed in answers in some spots and we added videos and images as well as evidence of our work and learning. Got questions? Feel free to send me an email. Thank you to those teachers that shared their images - credit is given.

- Description
- Dancing Backwards Society's free, downloadable school program, www.dancingbackwards.ca, celebrates Canada's women in political leadership and Indigenous women in governance. This online course for teachers of grades 5-8 focuses on engaged citizenship, gender equality, and the need for gender parity in decision making. The program provides teachers with multi-media lesson plans and activities that culminate in a final project in which students discover and document the story of one political woman in leadership or governance in Canada. Their 3-minute storytellings are then added to the website’s ever-expanding Her Story Archive, cementing women’s political contributions into history. Dancing Backwards satisfies various curriculum criteria for BC and all other provinces in Social Studies, English, Arts Education, and History (https://www.dancingbackwards.ca/the-program/learning-standards-outcomes-by-province

- Description
- This document contains tips and tricks for teaching the newly proposed Environmental Science coursework that will be implemented with the BC Draft Curriculum in the near future. My goal was to provide teaching strategies, assessment suggestions, field trip opportunities, and classroom ideas that are student led learning opportunities. In this document, you will NOT find worksheets or seat work. My hope was to provide invigorating ideas involving Environmental Science that will spark debate and critical thinking in your classroom. This document may be used or adapted for any science class. This was done as a Teach BC Assignment for my education coursework with the UNBC Education Program. I hope you enjoy it!

- My recommendations for 'Green Reads for Children Book List 1' was developed through the casting of a large net, taking into consideration suggestions from the BCTF PSA groups (2015, 2016), my fine colleagues at DLG and Champlain Annex in Vancouver, literary reviews on the web, and the Vancouver and Delta libraries, as well as parents and children. These 13 books are my personal outdoor education / spiritual "gems".

- Description
- Students take a census of an outdoor site, and look for organisms that perform different “jobs” in the biotic community. A biotic (or natural) community is made up of the various organisms that live and interact with one another in a particular environment. As in a human community, its members have different roles and depend on each other for survival. In this activity, students examine a study area to find out what organisms live there and the ecological jobs or niches they fill.

- Description
- Link to Laura Candler's File Cabinet on Cooperative Learning: Cooperative learning is a powerful teaching strategy that's more than just a passing fad. Research has shown that when implemented properly, students in cooperative learning classrooms outperform their peers in traditional classrooms. The key is knowing how to implement the strategies to foster interaction while making sure all students are held accountable. Dr. Spencer Kagan developed the "structural" approach to cooperative learning, and I've found it to be extremely effective. I highly recommend his book Cooperative Learning which is available from Amazon.com.

- The transition from high school to a post-secondary institution can be quite the learning curve. Students must quickly learn to manage finances, develop time-management skills, determine the program they would like to pursue (and courses to undertake), practice new studying techniques, and build their resume, among many other things. The Life After High School: A Post-Secondary Student’s Guide to Success resource booklet covers a variety of topics related to post-secondary education to provide practical and helpful infor- mation for students who would like to attend post-secondary school but may not know where to start. This booklet, developed by positive post-secondary students, provides information on mental wellness, academic life, social networking, career support, financial aid, and more. The Life After High School: A Post-Secondary Student’s Guide to Success aims to support students in their transition to post-secondary school and help students to reach their full potential!

- Welcome to Miss. Casella's Classroom! This is intended to provide free math and literacy lessons, as well as, to have an ongoing conversation with like-minded people. Emphasis is placed on social emotional learning, mystery, creativity, and imagination. Strongly, as a public educator, I feel these elements help to evoke independent critical thinking skills, while opening a gateway to optimism. Personally, I love philosophical metacognitive conversations. Inside all of us, there is a child. Let that child play. Fully, I support play-based learning/inquiry-based learning at all levels of learning. In these environments, people thrive by having the opportunity to do their own thinking, reaching their own conclusions independently or in a group. Centers, give way to incorporate the multiple intelligences and differentiated learning. Is it farfetched to believe Big Foot exists? Do fairies really exist? Why you ask? Well...why not! Dinosaurs once ruled this planet.

- Most viewed on Miss Casella's Classroom. Sherman Smith saw the most terrible thing happen. We the readers are not informed of what it was. This story is gently told and illustrated. It is a call-out to reinforce how negative emotions manifest inside of us. Violent acts, don't always have to be stereotype examples involving people. Violence includes natural disasters, like floods or hurricanes. A car accident or a fire are other examples. Please know, we are all wearing the ruby slippers. We all have the power within ourselves to move forward in our lives. No, it isn't always easy. Remember, taking the first step, in anything, is the hardest step. Talk to someone today!

- Two notes in two days from the bears! Being gay is just another kind of love. The bears inform us about the legalization of gay marriage in Ireland. Here in Canada too, people of the same gender can marry each other. The bears place emphasis on a number of points. Not everyone supports gay marriage, although, it was a majority rule. We always need to respect all views. How can we be all we can be when we're not allowed to be true to ourselves? The bears say, as long as you're not hurting yourself or others, you should be able to be true to yourself. If you can't be true to yourself, maybe you're not allowed to be or maybe you're too afraid for to be, to remember, that gay marriage didn't just happen overnight. It took a lot of courage, for people to stand up for something they believe in. What do you believe in? Will you take a stand? Taking the first step is the hardest.

- Inspired by the refugee experiences of several students from Byrne Creek Secondary School in Burnaby, this zine tells the story of a fictional Yazidi family who flee from war-torn Iraq to Canada. Students will learn about the many barriers most refugees face before finally settling as permanent residents in their country of asylum. Teachers can print multiple copies of the zine or students can read it on a SMART Board or tablet. The lesson plans help students to delve deeper into the refugee experience.

- Description
- "Secret Path" was written by Gord Downie and illustrated by Jeff Lemire and illustrates the hardship and history of residential schooling in Canada . This book was inspired by an Anishinaabe boy named Chanie Wenjack who ran away from his residential school in 1966 and died on the way to his home with the Marten Falls First Nation. The story is a graphic novel accompanied by a soundtrack written by Downie, and was released in October of 2016. The release of the book was followed by an hour long special on CBC that tells the story in animation with the soundtrack. All of the proceeds from the book, album, and performance will go to the National Center for Truth and Reconciliation. Here are some ideas for centers/stations that could compliment the use of Secret Path as a resource in text, soundtrack and film forms. The book has immense possibilities and because of its graphic novel form it could be adapted to suit the needs (and appropriateness) of a variety of grades and subjects.

- Description
- Sky, Water, Earth is a collection of free, online, self-paced experiences that takes the form of a career preparation initiative for youths interested in the field of science. This is a year-long joint initiative between UBC Faculty of Education, the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre, and the HR MacMillan Space Centre that runs from September 2017 to September 2018. The project guides youths to participate in learning playlists that help them build competencies outlined by the National Research Council Canada (NRC), some of which overlap with the BC Curriculum Core Competencies. Learners choose playlists they want to work on, each highlighting one or more of the NRC competencies for excellence in research - such as creative thinking, communication, teamwork, and more. Students complete competency-based activities through playlists, and earn points which can be redeemed for a variety of unique Real-World Opportunities curated to build success in their future careers.
