Description: The Exploring the Great Bear Sea Elementary and Secondary Curriculum Resources are based on the film The Great Bear Sea: Reflecting on the Past, Planning for the Future, by Green Fire Productions, and can be used to engage students on an inquiry-based, educational journey through the Great Bear Sea. The Great Bear Sea is a new name given to the North Coast of British Columbia (BC), an area that extends from Campbell River on Vancouver Island to the border of BC and Alaska. This region of British Columbia’s coast is one of the richest marine ecosystems in the world, has enormous cultural significance to the people who live here, and contains important resources for BC’s economy.

Description: Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "The Professionals” from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. A short profile on Ethel Johns, an important figure in the history of nursing in British Columbia. Lesson materials examine the changing role of women in the nursing workforce from 1900-1960 . An extension activity also examines the Nurses Strike of 1989. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. Learning Standards: The materials address aspects of the key learning standards of the current social studies 10 curriculum. Critical thinking skills are applied throughout as well as research and writing skills as described in the “Social studies inquiry processes and skills”. Aspects of historical significance, continuity and change, evidence and perspective are addressed in the materials as they examine the changing roles of women in British Columbian society as they work towards improving working conditions and recognition in the nursing profession.
