- Description
- Gratitude is linked with many physical, social and emotional benefits and is an important skill to foster with children and youth. When choosing an action to do so, however, research indicates that if the activity is forced or feels like homework it isn’t a good match. The outcome isn’t authentic and the results fall short of the potential benefits that experiencing gratitude offers. The most effective gratitude activities are ones that engage children’s interests and strengths.

- This is meant as an enrichment activity to dovetail with BC’s resources and economy. Also, it will demonstrate that while treaties, residential schools and the Indian Act set back and damaged Aboriginal culture and development, there are Aboriginal success stories. The lessons bring in themes of good resource management in BC. This offers some enrichment in business planning.

- Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "Age of Steamers” from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. In a province as vast as British Columbia, the focus in this film is the introduction of sternwheelers and steamships that allowed greater movement and mobility and how they impacted the development of the colony and province in the Gold Rush era and beyond. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. - In this unit, students will create their own “All About Me” book — about themselves, their families, and their community. They will be gathering information over several weeks and storing it in their own individual file folders. They will have special visitors and visit local landmarks in the community. In the end, they will put all their work together to create a book. They will celebrate the completion of their book at a “Meet the Author” afternoon with their caregivers.

- Description
- Everyone has a unique story to share. Stories help us learn about ourselves, our families, and other people. Curiosity and wonder leads us to new discoveries about ourselves and the world around us. By reading “And Tango Makes Three”, we not only learn about penguins and the penguin life cycle, but about other family structures (i.e. same-sex families) and how same-sex couples can become parents. This lesson plan can be used cross-curricula with Socials, PHE, ELA, and may also be used in Science (i.e. if combined with a stronger focus on the penguin life cycle, habitat, etc.)

- Students will reflect on the ways in which they have experienced or participated in name-calling based on physical appearance, and the ways in which expectations about appearance in our society influence us. They will learn about media literacy and examine media images for “attractiveness messages” that consciously and unconsciously influence our attitudes and behavior toward others.

- Blue Planet Links (www.blueplanetlinks.ca) organizes over 300 links to water-related websites, books and articles, featuring a fresh look and the most up-to-date design. We are poised to be the go-to teaching resource for all things H20. See Teaching Resources to explore a countless array of unit lessons for different grades, or check out Non-Fiction and Activities for classroom games and projects. Older students could be encouraged to use the site for research as we feature sections with links devoted to such topics as aquaculture, climate change, groundwater, pollution; almost every water-related topic you can think of. Water is becoming a heavier topic to discuss in the classroom as it is over-used and abused. Students are learning of severe droughts, plastic-filled oceans, decreasing salmon runs… and are rightfully asking questions. Blue Planet Links puts the resources to thoughtfully engage with these critical issues at your fingertips, and theirs!

- Description
- This text is illustrated with updated graphs, photos and cites the work of hundreds of scientists and organizations such as the IPCC, NASA, Environment Canada, Royal Society of Canada, and Natural Resources Canada, to name a few. My resource is an update on the science of climate change, extreme weather, protecting nature and biodiversity, advancing renewable energy, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions with frequent reference to Canada and in particular British Columbia. Global impacts, mitigation and adaptation are explained throughout the text. My ten years of research cites reputable journals, national and international organizations and the media. Research covers climate change from the Arctic to the Antarctic, projection of climate change, how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, El Nino/La Nina, extreme weather, renewables, the oil sands and transport of bitumen, and Canada's contribution at the UN COP meetings. This book is meant as a resource for our youths to make wise decisions about their future. **Revised edition uploaded September 2019.

- Description
- This Climate Justice in BC resource package was designed to provide teachers with classroom-ready materials to engage their students with how climate action intersects with social justice. The curriculum features eight modules designed for students in Grades 8 to 12 that explore climate justice within the context of BC’s communities history, economy and ecology. These lessons tie into subject matter and prescribed learning outcomes (PLOs) already in BC’s curriculum, while providing a framework with which to unpack modern social and environmental issues, such as our industrial food system, consumerism and waste, transportation, and the development of a green economy.

- Description
- This curriculum resource was produced by and for teachers in partnership with the Wilderness Committee, wildlife biologists and curriculum specialists. It’s intended to give students Grades 8 to 12 the opportunity to learn about species at risk in British Columbia in their local environment, understand the threats and identify what they can do to help. Module 1 is an introduction to species at risk while Module 2 specifically focuses on amphibians. Each module uses a project-based learning approach where students will be introduced to the topic, then develop field investigative skills and participate in citizen science. Our resource contains links to valuable multimedia resources as well as ideas to help students connect with species at risk in their community.

- Description
- This resource is a tool kit of short PDF files that can be used in a variety of ways to improve a group’s ability to understand each other, resolve differences and make good decisions. It was developed to support a seminar series conducted by the Centre for the Study of Educational Leadership and Policy (CSELP) at SFU. The tool kit could be useful for staff meetings, school-based team meetings or union executive meetings for example. It can also help individuals to deepen their understanding of the complexities of communication and improve their ability to be constructive participants in any type of discussion - whether as part of a group or more generally in their interpersonal relations.
