- Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "Age of Steamers” from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. In a province as vast as British Columbia, the focus in this film is the introduction of sternwheelers and steamships that allowed greater movement and mobility and how they impacted the development of the colony and province in the Gold Rush era and beyond. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. - Description
- Everyone has a unique story to share. Stories help us learn about ourselves, our families, and other people. Curiosity and wonder leads us to new discoveries about ourselves and the world around us. By reading “And Tango Makes Three”, we not only learn about penguins and the penguin life cycle, but about other family structures (i.e. same-sex families) and how same-sex couples can become parents. This lesson plan can be used cross-curricula with Socials, PHE, ELA, and may also be used in Science (i.e. if combined with a stronger focus on the penguin life cycle, habitat, etc.)

- Description
- Animation is a relatively overlooked area of art education and educators are not likely to have experience with the positive learning prospects that can be incorporated into the classroom. This medium proposes to encompass all teaching areas to broaden the spectrum of educational possibilities of all types of learners, including those with learning disabilities. Students and teachers show an enthusiasm for the medium but may lack the educational tools or, hold certain assumptions about animation that may make it a difficult medium to use within the confines of the classroom or institution. The intent of this project is to supply the reader with concrete forms and ideas that can assist educators in their attempts to integrate art education with different subject matter. Teaching aids such as simplified lesson plans for animation projects are included as well as discussions surrounding the benefits gained through using animation techniques and its historical development.

- Description
- This worksheet is a fun way for students to bring home their French skills (easily done in other languages) over the winter holidays. - This text is illustrated with updated graphs, photos and cites the work of hundreds of scientists and organizations such as the IPCC, NASA, Environment Canada, Royal Society of Canada, and Natural Resources Canada, to name a few. My resource is an update on the science of climate change, extreme weather, protecting nature and biodiversity, advancing renewable energy, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions with frequent reference to Canada and in particular British Columbia. Global impacts, mitigation and adaptation are explained throughout the text. My ten years of research cites reputable journals, national and international organizations and the media. Research covers climate change from the Arctic to the Antarctic, projection of climate change, how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, El Nino/La Nina, extreme weather, renewables, the oil sands and transport of bitumen, and Canada's contribution at the UN COP meetings. This book is meant as a resource for our youths to make wise decisions about their future. **Revised edition uploaded September 2019.

- Description
- The Every Teacher Project is a national study of Canadian educators’ perceptions and experiences of LGBTQ-inclusive education, designed to identify and make widely available the collective expertise of teachers and educational workers on inclusive education practices for sexual and gender minority students. The Every Teacher Project attracted tremendous support from project partner The Manitoba Teachers’ Society and from every national, provincial and territorial teacher organization in the publicly funded school systems of Canada. With their help in recruiting, researchers completed the project with 3,400 survey participants and an additional 24 focus groups, far exceeding our initial goals and making this the largest study of its kind in the world to date. - Description
- This thesis was written to complete a Master's in Educational Leadership at Vancouver Island University. This study investigated factors that encouraged public school teachers to participate or discouraged them from participating in their union. Survey respondents indicated ways and to what degree they participated both formally and informally, and responded to open-ended questions about the factors that motivated their level of participation. Three focus group interviews were conducted with high, medium, and low level participants, and the interview data were compared to survey results. The majority of teachers in this study reported a desire to be supportive of their union, and a willingness to become involved if an issue was important.

- Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "Fishermen’s Strike of 1900" from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. The vignette explores the tensions between the Cannery owners and the newly formed B.C. Fishermen’s Union the late 19th-early 20th century. The supporting lesson materials focus on the role and challenges of Frank Rogers efforts to organize and protect the rights of fishermen in the face of cannery owners opposition. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. - The material offers an introduction to refugee and displacement issues for students in grade 6 and up. The educational resources are the result of a collaborative effort between the graduate school class (summer 2008) of Dr. Jan Stewart, Director of the Institute for War-Affected Children at Global College, University of Winnipeg and Médecins Sans Frontières/ Doctors Without Borders (MSF). The materials were developed based upon an earlier MSF educational publication: “A Refugee Camp in the City, On Assignment” Teachers Guide, MSF Canada (2003). We hope these five lesson plans will encourage students to continue to learn and understand the challenges more than 50 million refugees and internally displaced people face worldwide

- Description
- In 2002, two American fighter pilots, Major Harry Schmidt and Major William Umbach, killed four Canadian soldiers near Kandahar, Afghanistan, because the pilots mistakenly thought the Canadian soldiers were shooting at them. Their court defense attributed the pilots’ actions to the Air Force-issued stimulant drugs they were taking at the time. The pilots had been taking the stimulant Dexedrine during the flight, under the standard-order guidelines of their commander. Today, when pilots are finished with their missions, they are provided with Ambien or Restoril, the “no-pills,” to bring them down and help them sleep and adjust after defying the body’s circadian rhythms and altering neurotransmitter levels with amphetamines. The lawyer for Major Schmidt noted that the depressant sleep aid Ambien, which was given to Schmidt to help him sleep before the mission, also affected his mental state when he bombed the Canadians.

- The materials address aspects of the key learning standards of the current social studies 10 and 11 curriculums. For Social Studies 10, critical thinking skills are applied throughout as well as research and writing skills as described in the “skills and processes of social studies”. Aspects of “Identity, Society and Culture” are addressed in the materials including gender roles, ethnicity and daily life as well the interactions of Aboriginal peoples in early Canada. Elements of the “Economy and Technology” learning outcomes are discussed in the examination of resource development and technological innovations. Additionally, aspects of the environmental impact and attitudes towards resource extraction are developed as they relate to the “Environment” learning outcome of the IRP. Regarding Social Studies 11, the areas of the “skills and processes of social studies” apply throughout as well as aspects of how Canadians can affect change at the federal and provincial levels of government. In the later examples of the reading the impact of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms are reflected in the work. The role of workers in both World War I and II and aspects of the “Autonomy and International Involvement” aspect of the IRP . The material can also be affectively applied to the “Society and Culture” of the curriculum addressing the development and impact of social policies and programs, the role of the labour movement in Canada and specifically the role of women in social, political and economic change in Canada.
